Oh, it is wonderful. It is absolutely mine, very personal film.. My grandfathers (both) died in the WW2, not died actually but are "missing presumed dead" and my paternal grandmother starved to death in the occupied territories whist waiting for my grandfather to return. As I am getting older I find myself thinking more and more about their destiny, trying to imagine how it was.. Did they burn in a tank (and this is most likely as both of them were in tank troops). Or did they make their way to Nazi camps? Nobody will ever find out where they are..
My grandfather-in-law (who passed away some years ago) was there on the beaches of Dunkirk.. He was always telling the stories how he found his own brother whom he hadn't seen for 8 years there..
Oh, I am so sorry – I have gone reminiscing instead of writing any sense. :D The film is beautiful, exquisitely filmed with the interesting splits in the narrative and changes of POV. The musical score is outwardly, so tense and stirring and hauntingly romantic. Actors are fabulous, especially James McAvoy. :D I need to talk more about the storyline but may be in a separate , spoilery post. I'll just say that I can't stop thinking about it, I think I even dreamt of it..
But as unforgettable as romantic storyline was the most memorable impression from the film for me is the sight of the beaches of Dunkirk, thousands of British troops lost and waiting ..

Date: 2007-09-11 06:53 pm (UTC)How awful - I always think that to be born in Russia at the beginning of the twentieth century must have been one of the worst fates you could experience!
I read in a wonderful book about the Red Army that the families of those who were "missing" were denied pensions, because the assumption was that the men had deserted or something even though this was, of course, so wrong. And even now, they are still finding remains and trying to identify them so the families can maybe get a pension after all these years.

Date: 2007-09-12 05:30 pm (UTC)I'll try to read the novel. Now I have a fabulous face for Robbie. :D I am so glad you liked the film having read the book. It is one thing to like an adaptation without any prior knowledge of original and the other to like it having read the book..

Date: 2007-09-11 07:34 pm (UTC)Very interesting about your grandparents. Sounds like the plot of a movie in itself. I've also always been interested in WW2 films, partly because my grandad was in the war. He made it home, but I was too young when he was alive to ever ask him about it.
Anyway, thanks for the recommendation!

I often think that the times our grandfathers lived in were much more interesting then ours. But you know, like the Chinese curse "let you live in interesting times". They went through so much!

Just another opinion we share . :D he really shone in this film, the role of Robbie fits him so much it feels as if it was made for him.

Date: 2007-09-11 11:10 pm (UTC)I find WWII movies much too personal as well, as my grandfather and all my great-uncles fought in the war, and a lot of them died and others went missing. I especially think of one of my great-aunts who was married for only a month and then her husband went to war, to die. Though I suppose we were relatively lucky. My best friend's grandfather was a career soldier (in USSR, as well) and he once told her that out of his whole graduating class only he and another man survived the war.
Actually, when I think of people of my grandparents and great-grandparents' generation, I just feel incredibly grateful I didn't have to live this, Civil War and WWII.

Oh, how sad! And many of the women never married again because there were not enough men after the WW2. I know that many of my friends didn't have grandfathers like I did but still - 2 out of the whole class! I guess these were the classes of Okudzhava's songs, boys and girls graduated in 1942.. "I kogda nad nimi gryanul smertnyj grom"..

I agree, we can't evrn allow ourselves take democracy and peace for granted!
