Oh, it is wonderful. It is absolutely mine, very personal film.. My grandfathers (both) died in the WW2, not died actually but are "missing presumed dead" and my paternal grandmother starved to death in the occupied territories whist waiting for my grandfather to return. As I am getting older I find myself thinking more and more about their destiny, trying to imagine how it was.. Did they burn in a tank (and this is most likely as both of them were in tank troops). Or did they make their way to Nazi camps? Nobody will ever find out where they are..
My grandfather-in-law (who passed away some years ago) was there on the beaches of Dunkirk.. He was always telling the stories how he found his own brother whom he hadn't seen for 8 years there..

Oh, I am so sorry – I have gone reminiscing instead of writing any sense. :D The film is beautiful, exquisitely filmed with the interesting splits in the narrative and changes of POV. The musical score is outwardly, so tense and stirring and hauntingly romantic. Actors are fabulous, especially James McAvoy. :D I need to talk more about the storyline but may be in a separate , spoilery post. I'll just say that I can't stop thinking about it, I think I even dreamt of it..

But as unforgettable as romantic storyline was the most memorable impression from the film for me is the sight of the beaches of Dunkirk, thousands of British troops lost and waiting ..

I have made some "Atonement" icons, free to share

How awful - I always think that to be born in Russia at the beginning of the twentieth century must have been one of the worst fates you could experience!

I read in a wonderful book about the Red Army that the families of those who were "missing" were denied pensions, because the assumption was that the men had deserted or something even though this was, of course, so wrong. And even now, they are still finding remains and trying to identify them so the families can maybe get a pension after all these years.

Ahh, Atonement. It was beautiful, especially The Mac. The novel's even better, though.

Wow, these are the best Atonement icons I've seen! Your colouring is absolutely lovely. Taking #s 2, 3 and 9, will credit!

This looks so beautiful. I hadn't even heard of it, I certainly haven't seen it, but I'm tempted to borrow icons just for the prettiness.

Very interesting about your grandparents. Sounds like the plot of a movie in itself. I've also always been interested in WW2 films, partly because my grandad was in the war. He made it home, but I was too young when he was alive to ever ask him about it.

Anyway, thanks for the recommendation!

Oh, I'm looking forward to this movie! I loved most of the book, but something about the ending didn't sit right with me. I betcha I'll really like the movie, though! So many pretty people! James McAcoy in particular!

These are so gorgeous! I'm taking # 3 & 4 - but they are all lovely.

I must admit that # 3 caught my eye earlier today when you replied to my post, so it's great that I will now be able to snag it. Hee.

And you are right - James McAvoy is fabulous.

So many lives lost, so much lost in those war years. Makes me weep for us all, for all the wars. Your icons are beautiful. Your post is eloquent.

Beautiful, beautiful icons! They're precious, seriously. I think icons look even better if what you're iconing is something you really like or something that has really touch you...

I can't wait to watch the movie. I was already sure that James McAvoy would be great there. However, I don't know when it will released here *pout*

These are so gorgeous. The movie is not out here yet but I cannot wait to watch it.

I find WWII movies much too personal as well, as my grandfather and all my great-uncles fought in the war, and a lot of them died and others went missing. I especially think of one of my great-aunts who was married for only a month and then her husband went to war, to die. Though I suppose we were relatively lucky. My best friend's grandfather was a career soldier (in USSR, as well) and he once told her that out of his whole graduating class only he and another man survived the war.

Actually, when I think of people of my grandparents and great-grandparents' generation, I just feel incredibly grateful I didn't have to live this, Civil War and WWII.

This looks so wonderful and I love James McAvoy so I really want to see it. I have a desperate need to ask you a spoilery question so can you please email me with the answer? :) I don't want to accidentally spoil others which is why I ask for email but can you tell me if the Keira and James characters end up together right at the end? I'm afraid one of them dies or has an affair with someone else. I just want to be forewarned :) Thanks!

Gorgeous icons! ♥ Snagging #4 if you don't mind.

I loved this movie so much, especially James McAvoy, which seems to be a common thing, but then again he deserves it!
