I am watching "The last of the Mohicans". (I had to check it up as I have heard so many good things about it). So far very good in a "movie that will make your rainy day better" way and quite different form the book which I remember to revolve more around war and Uncas and his father than around romance. It is STILL all about white people but I really like Hawkeye. And it is sweeping-epic gorgeous! I am looking forward to making some icons from this!

It has been a while since I have read the book – it was actually in our school program reading for the "Literature" class. I remember discussing at a very great length how evil white invaders wiped off the whole population of Indians by making them fight against each other. And that Uncas died and the future of the whole nation died with him. BUT!!! I don't remember anything serious between Cora and Hawkeye. I must have forgotten this completely – was their kissing scene in the book?????????????????

Anyways, this is such a pretty and wonderfully romantic scene:

PS I have to go to the dentist this afternoon - I am not overly happy about this. :D

I can rest easy that you're actually watching the original theatrical film. :)

Yes, Clannad is still in place. :D But it was rather horrifying to read about all the alterations. Mann says he wanted to make the film less sentimental, but taking away such emotions from the film is slightly troubling. What Mann describes as sentimentalism I've always interpreted as sorrow and I also think the Clannad song works so well that I'm sad to see it go.

As for the book - I've tried reading it, but it simply wasn't my cup of tea. I just found the way it was written to be extremely annoying. But oh well, tastes differ.

And LOTM icons would be wonderful. I want some from the ending with Alice . I love that scene SO much. I think its combination of music and imagery is just perfect.

The thing is, if Mann wanted to recut the film, that's fine. But don't take the original film away from fans who had spent ten years loving that version. The very least they could have done was include the original cut along with the new one. And not make me have to buy a UK DVD to have the film that I love.

I agree - and you know what's funny is that there seems to be three versions of that song: the one on the soundtrack is different from the film version, which is different from the version that was included on the Clannad CD that came out afterward. The film version was perfect for where and how it was used, imo. (I'm such a geek for this movie!;P)

I agree absolutely. But this seems to be a problem with directors doing a "final cut" or "final version". Suddenly you have a Star Wars where Han Solo does not shoot first, and a lot of confused viewers that feel cheated of the story they are used to seeing. I think a lot of directors forget that once a film is released it takes on a life of its own.

Also when a film is as visually coherent as LOTM (I would argue that half of that film's strength comes from the stunning cinematography and filming), altering this visual flow can have drastic effects on the way the viewer, well, views the movie.

But sometimes an alternate version can be a good thing. I couldn't stand Ridley Scott's "Kingdom of Heaven" in it's cinematic release form, but the Director's Version is actually not that bad.

Hee. That makes two of us. And Clannad film version is perfect. It has always annoyed me a little that the film version is impossible to get a hold of. Thankfully my DVD comes with a "soundtrack only" option that allows me to play the film as if it was (almost) a music cd.

Oh and your icon is breathtaking.

I've never seen Kingdom of Heaven, but I've heard this from several people - that they much prefer the Director's cut to the theatrical film. And I'll make no comment about the Star Wars/Han Solo fiasco. Ooops, does that qualify as a comment? ;)

I think Kingdom of heaven will always suffer from having Orlando Bloom as the main character. He is supposed to look pained and thoughtful, but it is never believable. But in the extended Director's Cut the rest of the cast is given room to shine and this helps the film immensely. Especially Eva Green's character is fascinating. Also the cinematography is breathtaking and I'm so shallow when it comes to stunning visuals that I like the film better just for that.

Parts of the plot is still problematic though, and historically correct it is not.

And Han shot first. I will fight for that until the grave. ;P
