Moonlight, episode 3: "Dr Feelgood"
Oct. 13th, 2007 06:31 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
It is official – I am watching this show until the end will us part, re-watching it and writing petitions if it is ever cancelled. I am starting to enjoy it's feel of the 80s melodrama, it's sentimentality and the choice of music. These were the songs of my youth and I can't ignore it! Plus this was an episode "in which Mick smiles A LOT" ..

The first thing Beth does after yesterday's revelation is being back to Mick's apartment. And here I start liking Beth (who prior to this moment was just some plucky but slightly annoying reporter) . Take it and look it in the eye – yep, I like this. Poor Mick is embarrassed, and who would not!

He finally lets her in, but puts on the best walled-up impression he can conjure:

He is definitely not smiling yet but let's see how long will this last. He has that puppy-eye hurt look that I find particular appealing.

Beth comes with what is the best line in "Moonlight" so far : "I really need you to tell me that I didn't see what I saw."

Hee! Beth is genuinely afraid and nervous and this is not helped by Mick's determination to scare her even more and give her quite useless warninsg of "How important it is that no one knows that WE exist" kind. But he is pretty, really pretty when serious.

And then she utters what can be described as a silliest thing ever "So do you bite people's necks and suck the blood out?" HEE! This is so good that atmosphere changes immediately.

Mick smiles, even against his will.

It is a pity that Beth can't stop asking questions about Mick's past, etc. etc. and he becomes all sad and broody again and reminisces about his wedding night (and his vampire wife). Before we go any further – by this point I do embrace all the crazy cinematographic decisions "Moonlight" has.. BUT! Please stop this swimming of the images in the flashback scenes! Please!! My eyes can't cope with this!

Mick rushes Beth out of his flat. He can't deal with the questions about his past yet, it still hurts..

A glimpse of today's story: a mad vampire scientist bites a doctor and by accident makes him a vampire. This is not as important as Mick and Beth's interaction so I'll keep it short.

The titles. Hmm, they remind me so much of the titles for "Sunshine".

The newly-vampired doctor goes crazy as he has no one to help him with his transition. This is the first time in his life when he realizes that chips are BAD.

Beth keeps following Mick around and asking if he trusts her or not. It could have been quite annoying if it wasn't quite cute. It also seems that Mick really doesn't mind it ( underneath his hard exterior).

She even follows him to the hospital where the body of the first victim is held.

And at this point Mick explains her how a person turns into a vampire. Beth takes this information quite easily and she is more and more comfortable with Mick's vampire side.

And when she leaves Mick is quite sad at first

But after a moment he smiles a little and this is my favourite screenshot from this episode:

Later we get a glimpse of Josef. It could have been even better if there was MORE Josef in this episode.. Things are never perfect. :D

There is a new character- The cleaner. This lady seems to be very important. She sports garb usually associated with vampires. I am so glad Mick has a very different taste. Imagine him in motorbike pants! ** shrugs at the thought **

Beth does some Internet research. I like how scared she looks in this shot:

Finally! Mick and Beth go for a ride on Mick's classic car. Badly filmed car rides appear very often in "Moonlight". a) The creators want to show off Mick's car (and the car is awesome!) or b) the creators want to show how much 80s-like this show looks? Hmm..
But look! Mick is smiling very wide at something Beth said. She tried to feed him chips and asked if he can fly.

And he smiles some more, just to make me happy. He is 85 and looks like that – a good reason to smile!

In the house of the doctor-turn-vampire: his wife is murdered.

Mick broods some more about the past and his wife. Hmm, the rough vampire doctor seems to be too far gone - he will not stop killing now. He has not been "socialized".

But then the crazy scientist appears, obviously to stab Mick in his back:

With a stake. But Beth is fully accustomed with the role of a vampire helper and she pulls the stake out.

Awwwwwwwwwww! Manicure!

Awwwwwwwwwww! Angst!

Luckily the scientist has not gone far and is apprehended by The Cleaner (who now appears to be some kid of a vampire authority)

Last look at the poor doctor – he doesn't have long to live. Mick will incinerate him any minute.

And then he and Josef will have a long meaningful conversation. In short, Josef advises Mick to "move on". Josef looks good once again.

I wasn't expecting this! This show manages to surprise me once again! Mick heeds Josef's words and goes to 'fess the tragic story of his turning (by his young wife on his wedding night) to Beth.

And Viva Beth! (and I am surprised again) She doesn't make a big deal about it but is rather very understanding which makes Mike smile again (thank you, Beth!)

And it all ends very happily with a hand touch. AWWWWWW!

PS I also watched "Blood Ties" today. I have made a big mistake with "Blood Ties" - I have read one of the books. Hmm and Hmm again - I didn't like it at all. Now I can't look at the show with quite the same love that I had before. May be this will pass.

Date: 2007-10-13 05:54 pm (UTC)I found the first episode online, so I'll watch it tomorrow, as soon as I finish my current job assignment, and will get back to you with comments.
I've just checked your profile again, and noticed we share a whole lot of interests, they're almost indentical here and there. This pleases me so much! Also, perhaps talking to you will persuade me to finally watch the remaining episodes of BSG's 3rd season (I'm stuck after #4, mainly because I was challenged to write a Gaeta/Racetrack fic set before #5, so I couldn't watch it, then I discovered PB and, um, didn't watch at all, anymore), and to write all that Kara/Lee fiction I'm planning for such a long time, lol.
Sorry for the long comment, and quite off-topic as well ... it's just me, messy as always.

It would be great to hear what you think!

YAY! It is wonderful to find someone with similar interests! I have stopped watching BSG season 3 after " Unfinished Business" but I must watch the rest – I am a completist. :D Any Kara/Lee fiction is very welcome. :D

Date: 2007-10-13 07:30 pm (UTC)I like watching like this – when you mainline a show like this you almost feel as if you are saturated by it. :D Plus I am very impatient and can't wait. For example, with "Moonlight" now I am so impatient to know what is going to happen next. :D
especially the Lucius ones :p
** sigh ** Vorenus! He is truly one of my favourite characters. So complex, so tortured!!

Date: 2007-10-14 12:05 pm (UTC)I've seen only 8 episodes from Rome's season 1, but I'm totally in love with it already! Favourite character is obviously Lucius, although the wittiest seems to be Octavian, and Titus is slowly growing on me, too.

Date: 2007-10-14 07:06 pm (UTC)Supernatural is one of my biggest pleasures (brothers Winchester are too pretty to be in one show at the same time!) . It started slowly on me and I was so-so about it during the season 1 but the season 2 proved this it's strength..

I am so in love with the friendship Titus and Lucius share. They both are my favourites, I don't want to choose. :D Their loyalty to each other and their interaction is just priceless! One of the most memorable moments for me is when Titus gives Lucius advice about love an women. It is just marvelous.
Octavian in the season one is lovely!!! I am so happy that they showing "Rome" in Romania – I saw it in Moscow this summer too and YAY! Rome is conquering the world!

Date: 2007-10-14 07:13 pm (UTC)Awww, yes, certainly! I remember writing down the discussion between Lucius and Titus you're talking about (I usually take notes of all the TV shows quotes I love), and it made me roar with laughter. All women have it, LMAO. I hope that's the conversation you were talking about. And I can't wait for season two, as Octavian will be a grown up, and, from your icons at least, he seems to become quite handsome, in addition to being witty and clever.
About Supernatural, we share the same opinion (btw, awesome icon, I'm a Dean-girl all the way). At first, there wasn't too much in the show to appeal to me, yet another horror/teen show, but then, when the emotional factor stepped it, I became pretty much an addict. Not to mention Dean is to die for, lol.

Date: 2007-10-14 11:27 pm (UTC)I hope it is not too expensive! In Russia they were showing "Rome" on one of their best channels, NTV. I told my mum and sister to watch it ASAP. :D

Oh yessssssss! And then there is that wonderful scene with Lucious and his wife..
And I can't wait for season two, as Octavian will be a grown up, and, from your icons at least, he seems to become quite handsome, in addition to being witty and clever.
He is played by Simon Woods who was Bingley in the new "Pride and Prejudice" adaptation..

And me!!!!! I am a Dean girl too (though Sam is really cute). I like that they managed to move from the episodic show to the show with big and wonderful archs..

Date: 2007-10-15 03:25 pm (UTC)2. yes, I know the scene you're talking about, hehe. I'm actually a great shipper/lover of Lucius/Niobe, as I also like the actors who are playing them. and plus, the characters do deserve to find some kind of peace and happiness together.
3. haven't seen that adaptation, but I'll look for it. I don't know where, it's so difficult to find good shows on TV, so streaming/watching online would be the only solution, again. I love both Jane Austen's works, and Brittish television/dramas, so I think I'd enjoy that.
4. yay for Dean-girls then :D Sam is cute, indeed, but you know, Dean is that prototype of the "rebel with/without cause", and the touch of mystery floating around him does help.

Date: 2007-10-15 08:36 pm (UTC)It is gorgeously filmed and has of the hauntingly beautiful music. See: http://smartcanucks.ca/wp-content/uploads/2006/07/pride_and_prejudice.jpg
I still prefer the old BBC adaptation, the one you are watching at the moment. It has the lake scene :D.

I must confess that I like Sam and the new character, Ruby!

Date: 2007-10-16 09:11 am (UTC)Also, I don't know Ruby yet. They're airing only season one here, I'm past its half anyway. So she'll probably be on my mind soon, too.

Date: 2007-10-14 05:20 pm (UTC)So, yet another one who's found Moonlight palatable. I've so far watched the first ep and though it didn't make an obsession forming impact I liked it well enough to keep watching. EP 2 tonight...

Date: 2007-10-14 06:20 pm (UTC)I hope you will like episode 2 - for me the pilot was the weakest so far (and there are some delicious spoilers for the episode 4. :D)
Your icon is gorgeous, BTW!

Date: 2007-10-14 07:08 pm (UTC)Well, I watched the 2nd ep and I'm rather looking forward to the next one. Have to admit I do like the charachter of Mick. There's something about him and not just the looks. ;) It has to be that certain kind of vulnerability under tough exterior I always find so appealing. Sucker for puppy eyes, that me all right.
After the first ep I racked my brain for ages trying to remember where I'd seen Alex O'Loughlin before. Till it clicked... Mary Bryant. I thought he was cute as Mary's husband, even if I actually watched that film only for Jack Davenport.
Btw, you are the second person to remark upon the dodgy car scenes. I didn't even notice, ha. But now that someone has pointed that out.... yup, bad CGI.

Date: 2007-10-14 11:16 pm (UTC)True. :D I haven't made too many icons – only the ones in the comments in this post. So I was hoping to steal some of yours. :D

Exactly! These big lovely eyes. And THE VOICE! He has these notes in his voice that make all relaxed, soft and mellow..:D But at the same time he is quite a tough cookie - I like that he doesn't REALLY have any big scruples (he drinks some of the blood Josef brought, yes?) and how he handles Beth.

Yes! One of my friends also reminded me about this. Hmm THE HUSBAND? Like his wife will be in love with Jack Davenport? (It is not as if I blame her :D)

I think they made it on purpose, actually.. But it didn't turn quite right..

Oh yes, the voice. That always gets me. I'm a voice person too, one of the reasons I love JackD. ;)

Well, actually the character Jack plays, "Lt Ralph Clarke" gets totally used by Mary. She's not in love with him. On the other hand Lt Clarke is not a very nice person either. I still found him rather yummy.... it's the voice. *g*

Date: 2007-10-14 06:53 pm (UTC)I also like that the show knows "what it wants" - it is clearly stirring towards romance story line with vampire elements rather then redemption + noir story that "Angel" did. I don't mind romantic fiction at all, as long as it serves the purpose and makes me feel "that way".. :D
