Dresden files!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mar. 2nd, 2007 05:11 pm"Dresden files" had a strange start for me. I am still struggling with the cinematography and the colour scheme of the series. I know not all of the TV series about supernatural matters should be filmed in a way "Supernatural" is filmed, but I seem to enjoy things so much more when they are filmed beautifully. Muted colours of "Dresden files", it’s cheap-TV-series filming and it’s poorly done monsters don’t do much for me. BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even with all my misgivings about the cinematography, I find myself loving it more and more over these past few weeks. The series are so very good on many levels that I try to immerse into it’s visual way..
Great things about the series:
- Good story about things supernatural is always a winner with me. Especially when it is a well-thought-through story with so many things in the past to discover and so many things in the future to be developed, with strong and coherent world-building.
- Especially when it has a main hero who is a wizard, and also is original, quirky, attractive in SPADES and has his way with words on a snarky side. On top of that he CARES and wants to protect everyone and does not think of himself. And to add more, he has a haunted and dark past and a disregard for authorities. I am already done for!
- Strong heroine who is in the life-long OTP with the main hero. And their relationship is doomed from the very beginning as heroine knows nothing about supernatural world and she must never discover this world underneath her own world because this will put her in terrible danger. (And this is where "Dresden files" are much better then "Supernatural" for me. I need a heroine to bond with!!!!!!!!)
- Hero’s sidekick is already dead but cheerful, witty and has a great choice of ties
Harry Dresden (Paul Blackthorne): WIZARD Lost Items Found. Paranormal Investigations. Consulting. Advice. Reasonable Rates. No Love Potions, Endless Purses, Parties, or Other Entertainment.
Scruffy-looking??? I say – gorgeous, especially when he starts talking with the velvety voice of his

Lt. Connie Murphy (by Velerie Cruz). Strong. Loyal. Intelligent. Lovely.

Bob (Terence Mann). Already dead but hasn’t lost his appetite for life:

This is true for me as well. :) And "Supernatural" is starting to lack a heroine, or at least a good recurring female character. (I'm not that crazy about Jo. Or specifically the Jo/Dean thing. In fact, after her last episode, I'd go for a Jo/Sam thing. But that is a huge digression. Hee.)

Date: 2007-03-02 06:20 pm (UTC)And where have I seen this Paul Blackthrone before?
I also think the same thing - he seems to have a familiar face! The last episode ("Bad Blood"!!!) with some vampire lady send me into the crazy Harry Dreseden appreciation spin! He even made a lady vampire absolutely crazy about himself !!! “Bad blood” was the best episode of “Dresden files” up to now for me.
I'm not that crazy about Jo. Or specifically the Jo/Dean thing. In fact, after her last episode, I'd go for a Jo/Sam thing. But that is a huge digression. Hee.
EEEEE! This is a VERY INTERESTING idea!! I warmed up to Jo in the last episode (and Dean/Jo) too but I am still sitting on a fence with this. May be if they shown her more often and gave her some more depth. And not just childish "I hate you because your father had something to do with the death of my father". But I can see Jo/Sam as a very very interesting thing indeed!! Also after Sam's evil exploits he seems to be so much more attractive. :D

Date: 2007-03-02 10:23 pm (UTC)I've remembered where I've seen him before! He was the bad guy in Lagaan. Have you seen it? A wonderful Bollywood film about love and cricket. No seriously - its great. :)
(and he is a very good villain)
But I can see Jo/Sam as a very very interesting thing indeed!!
I know!
Also Jo has this thing were she wanted to be a hunter, but no one would let her, and Sam had his thing with wanting to be normal. So they could bond over that. ;D And I thought they had great chemistry. More so than Jo/Dean.
But I agree, she should be shown more often and some depth and character development would be nice. And Sam as evil was strangely attractive. I'm normally more fond of Dean, but evil!Sam was oddly hot. Hee.
But they are nothing next to Agrippa and Octavia, which I mention simply to have an excuse to use an Agrippa icon. *g* New episode soon!

Date: 2007-03-02 10:34 pm (UTC)EEEEE! Exactly!! I have seen this film and loved it (even thought it had too much cricket for my taste and I was shipping a totally wrong ship). But the evil guy was great! When he thrown the last ball out I was rather sad for him. :D

I quite see that they can go for a love triangle with Jo in the middle, this can work out as a very interesting thing!
But I agree, she should be shown more often and some depth and character development would be nice.
I also still remember the role she had in “Veronica Mars” and this doesn’t help neither.
And Sam as evil was strangely attractive. I'm normally more fond of Dean, but evil!Sam was oddly hot. Hee.
This goes back to my liking of “bad boys” , Jaime and Sandor of course!!
But they are nothing next to Agrippa and Octavia, which I mention simply to have an excuse to use an Agrippa icon. *g* New episode soon!
I know!!! I felt quite bereft this week – and what am I going to do when this season finishes? Will be going mad as after the first season of BSG, I think.

Date: 2007-03-02 10:50 pm (UTC)Heee - me too. (and umm...I was hoping for the English woman and the hero as well. I suspect that is what you mean by wrong ship?)
And a love triangle with Jo in the middle would be great! Oh I really wish they would do this.
I also still remember the role she had in “Veronica Mars” and this doesn’t help neither.
I didn't mind her so much in VM, but I was a little annoyed that she was tiny and blond - like a Buffy clone. And even though I liked Buffy well enough, one tiny, blond hunter was enough. (but this could be the fact that I'm a brunette that's talking. *g*)
“bad boys” , Jaime and Sandor of course!!
There is no one like them, there is just them. ;)
re: the season finish of Rome. I will possibly be traumatized. Especially since there isn't a new season waiting, and the episodes left are all we've got. *whimper*

Date: 2007-03-03 11:00 pm (UTC)Yes, this along with “Little women” is one of my biggest disappointments on a shippy front, you know sometimes just something about interaction between certain characters lead you to believe they should love each other!! It very rarely happens to me, I usually pick up a pair that ends up together (I don’t know why!!)
I didn't mind her so much in VM, but I was a little annoyed that she was tiny and blond - like a Buffy clone.
It seems that this is what the creators were trying to escape in “Dresden Files” by making Murphy a brunette instead of a blond as in the books. (And I am totally with you on “brunettes unite” thing, though I warmed up to the blond hair since Sasha happened to be blond :D)

** gasp** No MORE???????? I was hoping that there going to be MORE. (I am getting ready to write to BBC)

Date: 2007-03-02 06:14 pm (UTC)I'm so happy you're loving this series.
Harry and Murphy are one of my major OTPs, and I'm glad they managed to carry the dynamic over to the series. It hasn't really been touched on yet in the series, but in the books, another reason Harry tries to keep Murphy out of things is that she's committed to her job and the law, and if he let her get any more involved, it would complicate matters for her and put her in a hard place. Of course, in the books, she eventually finds out and gets more and more involved(and I'm sure that'll happen eventually in the series, too). In the books(probably the series, too, bnut hasn't been touched on yet) Harry has this "true eye" thing where he can see a person as defined by their soul...when he first looked at Murphy, he saw a shining, glorious and perfect warrior of justice, and when he looks at her now(read: after years of being pulled into his stuff) she's still a glorious and perfect warrior of justice, but worn down and scuffed, which makes it even better.
They're one of those OTPs where the guy is absurdly protective(but knows he'd get shot in the butt if he was ever overtly protective...hmm...I seem to have a fondness for that kind of OTP) but it's completely unnecessary because magic or no, she kicks butt just as well as he does. I love his chastised puppy look anytime Murphy catches him at her crime scene or finds out he's keeping something from her...it's like "I'm bad and I know it and I'm going to go take my due scolding now." And he knows her favorite foods and brings her pie...
And Morgan...DANG!!!! I love books Morgan, but TV Morgan is a lot different. But they're relatively necessary changes(much like Bob) as a direct translation of Morgan wouldn't have worked for the series. But man, no one ever could have convinced me Morgan could possibly ever be hot until he showed up in the series.
BTW, you MUST read the books, because as awesome as the series is, the books are about 100 times better.

I haven’t thought of this, but this makes sense!!
Of course, in the books, she eventually finds out and gets more and more involved(and I'm sure that'll happen eventually in the series, too).
Even in 5 episodes their relationship already developed quite nicely and one can see that it would not be long until Dresden will not be able to keep things hidden. I liked the episode where the crazy Egyptian thing possessed Murphy. I loved how protective and mad Harry was and how kept saying things like "someone I care about". ** swoon ** You can see he just keeps the distance because he thinks that this is better for her.
when he first looked at Murphy, he saw a shining, glorious and perfect warrior of justice
AWWW! This is so fabulous, I hope they do this!!

I have fondness for this type of OTP too. :D I am watching "Full metal Panic" BTW and it also Gooood!
And I like Murphy and the way she is perfectly able to kick anyone’s butt but the way she respects Harry so much and values his opinion.
BTW, you MUST read the books, because as awesome as the series is, the books are about 100 times better.
I am already thinking to get one this weekend. The thing is, I am a completist with books and I still have "Abhorsen" not finished..
BUT EEEEEEE!

Date: 2007-03-02 06:46 pm (UTC)As you're branching out into anime and manga, a couple good examples of OTPs like Harry and Murphy are Roy Muastang and Riza Hawkeye in Full Metal Alchemist(the series I did a huge number of posts on recently and I gave them their own MV spam post) and Major Kusanagi and Batou in Ghost in the Shell(which I just finished watching and am about to post a quick writeup on)
BTW, the comment in this icon is referring to the fact that, in the books, Murphy is a petite blonde. Now, she was a petite blonde before a certain Ms. Summers had a huge cult following, but they wanted to avoid the stereotype. Her first name is also Karrin, but there's a Karen Murphy on the Chicago police force in RL, so they changed her name.

Date: 2007-03-02 10:19 pm (UTC)But he still has these feelings deep inside, right? I must to say also that the last episode with the vampire lady was very blood-pressure-raising. :D
I like life-log UST relationships when they are done well, as you said before, when people have a real and serious reason why they can not to be together. I think Harry and Murphy can be counted in this category.
Major Kusanagi and Batou in Ghost in the Shell(which I just finished watching and am about to post a quick writeup on)
I already downloaded “Ghost in the Shell” (and oh, I am so easy to persuade!) – this is the next anime I am going to watch after “Full Metal Panic”.
BTW, the comment in this icon is referring to the fact that, in the books, Murphy is a petite blonde.
Oh my, I really “fell in love” with the way TV-series Murphy looks. She is normal, but very attractive at the same time! I guess it was more difficult for you to get used to her!
Now, she was a petite blonde before a certain Ms. Summers had a huge cult following,
I must apologize for my cultural deficiency – I don’t know who Ms. Summers is. ** hides **
Her first name is also Karrin, but there's a Karen Murphy on the Chicago police force in RL, so they changed her name.
I read this in wikipedia – I think it is quite good that they did this, may be real-life Murphy was not so happy?

Date: 2007-03-03 12:56 am (UTC)I like the way TV Murphy looks. If nothing else, it means I don't have to listen to people whine about her being a Buffy ripoff(BTW, Buffy's full name is Buffy Anne-I think-Summers.) But yeah, I like that he's normal looking.
Actually, I doubt real life Murphy cared, but the SciFi lawyers did.

Date: 2007-03-02 09:17 pm (UTC)Your review of the series is much the same as other fan reviews I've read. They like the series, but there are a few things that are just off. I am hoping the show lasts (please, please, please) and they get a bigger budget and are able to have better special effects and better lighting or cinematography or whatever it is that it needs.
In the books Bob is just a skull. I think they did the right thing for the TV series by making him a person. I don't think people would relate to TV Bob as a skull. :)
Paul Blackthorne makes a great Harry. I agree with you, his voice is gorgeous.

I hope show lasts too, though I am quite hopeful. There is a big fan base and it is very good even for people who never read the books.!!!

Wow – this is so interesting!! I think you are right, and I am glad they did! I am so fond of suave Bob!

Date: 2007-03-04 05:32 am (UTC)I do think they got TV Murphy's personality pretty good. But I think she backs down too easily from Harry in the TV show. I think book Murphy is much more fiery and "in your face" than TV Murphy. Other people may see that differently. I do like the actress though. I watched a little interview on YouTube, I think it was, and she was talking about her character 'Murphy' and I just liked her.
I'm so glad you are reading the books now. :)
