"The Nine" episode 5 screencaps
Nov. 3rd, 2006 02:12 pmThe fifth episode of "All about Eva" "The Nine" (the show about destinies of 9 people after their involvement in the hostage situation) was very good in very many ways. Seriously, at this point in time I can recommend this show to anyone.
+ "The Nine" does not seem to be cutting any corners. No matter how much I want to hear that employers (in general and specifically) purely exist to look after employee's interests, this is not the true state of the matters. The measly compensation of 43000 $ for the death of security guard, hmm, this is THE LIFE!
+ I am getting involved with and starting to feel for MANY characters in this show. I feel connection with the characters in a different way: Detective Nick is just breaking my heart, I feel empathy with teddy-bear-like Lucas Dalton and Malcolm is awesome in his truly good and genuinely strong way. He seems to be an incredibly efficient manager too, oh boy - saving all his e-mail exchange for years!! This is just so anal and fabulous!
+ As I felt from the beginning, this show is about the CHARACTERS, about the things which are going on in people's minds, about consequences of the 52 hours they spent together as hostages. I just find this type of show much more interesting then the show with primary focus on the criminal stories of some kind, like CSI or "Law and Order". (which two are very well made shows, but yours truly never managed to last through any single episode of any variety of them without falling asleep. Disclaimer: This is just ME, may be I am always tired!!)

Date: 2006-11-03 02:22 pm (UTC)I think you've absolutely articulated why I love this show so much; it really is SO character-driven and I care about these characters (even the ones that I care about less - like Lizzie - still interest me because of their interactions with the ones I do like!)
Lucas is an interesting case for me; on the face of it, and in the present, he of course seems like quite a stand-up guy BUT then I remember and agree with what Nick said: Lucas IS responsible for what happened in the bank because he is the one who introduced his psychopathic brother into the mix. (Also, he's legally responsible, thanks to the fact that anyone who is involved in a felony - like bank robbery - which leads to people being murdered is considered responsible for their murders!)
And Nick. Oh, NICK! Sigh!

Oh, of course he is responsible! I just can see so much potential for the redemption in him, and there is nothing I like more then the redemptive types. Plus I think I like the actor, Owain Yeoman, he was trained in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London.
And Nick. Oh, NICK! Sigh!
Sigh! How he was playing cards because he wanted to stop remembering Eva. And he was so much softer and even younger through all the flash-back scenes with Eva.

Date: 2006-11-03 08:22 pm (UTC)I know! I really believed that Nick DID think of Eva as a new beginning and that he seemed so protective and wanting to take care of her.
But the more I think about this story that Eva kept spending money to change her plane ticket because she thought Nick might ask her out, the more I just don't buy it. That's expensive ($300) and it makes her look a little unstable to think that she would keep delaying her life-changing move JUST in case some handsome man she didn't even know might ask her out and maybe start a relationship with her.
I think she was in on the bank job but probably for some reason like she was being really pressured, and Franny just made up the story that it was Nick's fault that Eva changed her ticket, either because the ticket was a genuine surprise to her or else she knew about it beforehand, but didn't want her sister's memory besmirched (and what better way to get Nick to back off than to lay a HUGE guilt trip on him?) or something. I lean to this explanation, because Franny and Eva weren't discussing her impending move to Arizona on Friday afternoon, before the robbery, which is very odd considering that Eva was supposed to leave the next day, you know?
Poor Nick. I think he is going to suffer so much.

Date: 2006-11-03 08:46 pm (UTC)Actually after you have mentioned this, I can't buy it neither. Franny did look a bit odd straight after her "revelations". This is why I immediately thought "Ok, it must be Franny who helped the robbers". I suppose as well I wanted to believe and it would have been so nice that Eva liked Nick so much. But in reality, Eva did like Nick, but Franny's revelations is the last thing Nick needs now.
And I am going to be very very angry with Franny if what she said was a lie. Franny does seem to be emerging as unintentionally manipulate person. WHich I kind of like even less then a manipulative person who does it all on purpose and at least doesn't lie to her/himself.

I guess I think now that they BOTH were involved and that they didn't discuss anything because this is not what people discuss just before bank robbery in the bank where any passer-by can hear them.

I know! But he looks so good when suffering and pondering!

Date: 2006-11-03 08:59 pm (UTC)I think Eva genuinely liked Nick, and I feel like she was probably pressured (somehow) into being involved - and that she genuinely also feared for Nick's safety in this situation. So I still think she was not a bad person and that maybe she really did like Nick VERY much.

Date: 2006-11-03 09:30 pm (UTC)Oh, no! I understand! I don’t remember this clearly, I will probably re-watch. She could also be saying this in a usual friendly banter way, like some people could say to each other – “oh, see, your girlfriend is here” . Actually the whole thing is starting to spiral in my head (which is a BAD thing), but you know what I think – that it could be someone absolutely unexpected who was a robber’s helper. Agatha Christie style, so to speak. But, no- I can’t stop thinking, I need a new episode!
So I still think she was not a bad person and that maybe she really did like Nick VERY much.
There was something so naïve and heartbreaking when she said “When you came into my life I thought all the bad things which had happened to me are behind”. **sniff**

I know! And she had that lovely, lovely smile - no wonder Nick was half in love with her. And I loved his sad little smile at the end, remembering.

Date: 2006-11-05 07:18 pm (UTC)I think you can be correct - in a character-driven show like this we should expect of some twists of human nature, not some twists in the story itself.
