Serenity!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oct. 12th, 2005 07:11 pmHave watched “Serenity” yesterday and liked it very much. I had mixed feelings when I went to see it – I am always cautious about something with so much surrounding hype, but “Serenity” lived up to expectations.
Film is very fast-paced, all space paraphernalia is very naturalistic, the story is great, the main actors are amazing, especially Nathan Fillion as Mal and Summer Glau as River.
Nathan Fillion is exceptionally cute and made an entry into my legion of favourite actors.
One thing I wasn’t sure is Morena Baccarin as Inara , she seems to be just a pretty face. Or may be I am jealous?
I really-really-really want to buy “Firefly” DVD….

Date: 2005-10-12 08:28 pm (UTC)Serenity the ship is really an old rickety thing, isn't it? [Oops, Kaylee wouldn't be happy if she heard me say that] It's hard to compare it to Galactica, which is more organized and better maintained, but there's a similar realistic feeling, I think.
One reviewer expressed an opinion that Nathan Fillion's face is not made for the big screen. Blasphemy! I love his crooked smile and he has the kind of cuteness that really grows on you. And he has good range as an actor. Summer Glau is awesome in the film, but even better in the series where you see different aspects of River's character and she has more complex dialogue. She really made me feel for and understand River (whom I didn't particularly care for at first). And she does deadpan humor so well. I can't believe it was her first acting job (well, she appeared on Buffy's spinoff, Angel, she played an enchanted ballet dancer).
As for Morena, I know how you feel, I felt the same way when the series first aired on TV. It took me a while to get used to her as Inara. She doesn't have much to do in the film, and her back story is kind of muddled, but she wasn't central to this story and time is limited. In the end, it's all about Mal and River.

Date: 2005-10-12 09:12 pm (UTC)O, was thinking the similar thing, that “Serenity” looks a bit like “Battlestar”
Kaylee wouldn't be happy if she heard me say that
I loved the storyline about Kaylee and Simon – opposites attract is one of my favourite love stories, also she is very pretty and cool..

How somebody can say such a thing!!!!!!!! ;) I have never seen him before and fell in love from the first sight, so to speak;) ; and his acting is very good – all complexity of his feelings for Inara is very transparent. It doesn’t come out as clear that Inara is returning his feelings. (could be due to the fact that her appearance is quite brief, as you say)
You know, like when it is Lee and Kara, I remember I was just flicking through the channels idly and the bam – I found “The act of contrition” ; that scene when he tells her that it is all about Zak, not about nuggets themselves. I thought instantly – these two have feelings for each other..and was a fan of “Battlestar” ever since.
I could not see it Inara’s case (Though I loved the scene with half-naked Mal). It could get better when I watch “Firefly” ..
Thank you for recommendation,

Date: 2005-10-13 02:47 am (UTC)Kaylee has been pining for Simon since the first episode, so it's a great payoff to see them get together. Simon was always very absorbed in River and was generally clueless. When he did try to talk to Kaylee, he'd act like a total idiot.
Oh yes, Act of Contrition is the episode that hooked me in and turned me from a sporadic casual viewer into a total fangirl. That scene (especially "careful" and "step back") makes me weak at the knees every single time.
Inara's feelings for Mal are pretty well hidden. Come to think of it, I can remember at least two key scenes on the show when it's practically spelled out (in actions, not words). I think Joss just didn't want to deal with Mal/Inara at this point. But yes, Mal is much more transparent about it, he tries to hide it with various antagonistic remarks and etc, but it's so very obvious from their first scene together (on the show) and throughout the film.

Yes, yes, yes, it is the tone of Apollo's voice what does it for me - he is so soft-spoken and this gives great contrast to the words. And how they always come so-close to each other..
