Game of thrones: episode 9

I loved the episode and am feeling too emotional to write anything coherent.Out of the new characters, I liked Shae (who is long past 18, but otherwise perfect, the trend to make everyone older continues) and I continue to love Bronn. Ros-the-whore seems to have disappeared without a trace, thank you to the old gods of TV. And then there were characters that I hated strong enough for the Russian Amazon in me to rise up and want to kill them all with bare hands (and feed their livers and other parts to the dogs :D).
Wall of HATE:

What has always bothered me is this : why did Joffrey decide to execute Ned? May be there was some explanation in the future books, but I have forgotten it. Unless it is plain and simple "Joffrey is a tyrant and thinks killing people is a good thing to do" which does not seem strong enough. Even Cersei seemed to be surprised, and really, Ned's death was in no way advantageous to her and Joffrey as it meant more war. It meant that Lannister's troops that are positioned against Northerners (who could have gone back to Winterfell if Ned was still alive and contacted them) could have instead travelled to King's Landing to meet the troops of Stannis Baratheon. Plus, killing high lords did not seem to be an everyday thing to do as they usually were imprisoned or sent to the Wall.
One of my personal pet theories is that this was Littlefinger's doing. He said something to Joffrey, hinted at something. Something must have set off Joffrey's madness.
What do you think? What made Joffrey decide to execute Ned?
PS I have taken tomorrow off so that I can make some animated icons. Yes, this is serious!
PS: Possible spoilers in comments

Ned's death was amazing. Both Sansa and Arya broke my hert.

Date: 2011-06-13 10:21 pm (UTC)The way it was shot, with the sound going out and then the camera cutting to Arya just as sword swung left me completely paralyzed. It was absolutely brilliant. This show has seriously exceeded all my expectations.

Date: 2011-06-14 09:56 pm (UTC)It's been very good lately, but this last ep was just absolutely perfect for me. It makes me really sad (but mostly annoyed) that some people are actually considering dropping it because Ned died.

I can't believe some people just didn't pick up the vibe of doom! But the next ep is bound to have everyone comeing back for more, I think. :D

I also think a lot of people are just used to watching a show with a main character and having the safety of knowing that that character will never die except for maybe in the last episode of the series.

lol. When I was reading the first time, I got to the bit where ned was improsoned and felt the vibe of DOOM, so I had to go and check spoilers. I don't like bad endings when I am not warned.:D
And I warn you: there will be more deaths. MORE.
I don't think Ned was THE main character. I don't think any charcter in GOT qualifies as the main one. But may be because Sean Bean is the best and the most popular actor out of the bunch, it seemed that way.

Date: 2011-06-16 07:11 pm (UTC)I'm spoiled for one more death which I think will happen in the next episode and one which will probably happen next season and that's it. I hadn't been spoiled for Viserys's death and while it didn't entirely shock me that they killed him off, the way he went out was spectacular in a very creepy way. Of course, I hated the bastard so I probably enjoyed that one a bit more than I should have.
That's the feeling I got watching the show. But like you said, SB is the most popular of the bunch so people will naturally assume he's the lead.
