Persona, David Tennant and BACK TO WORK
Apr. 5th, 2006 01:21 pmI always find Ingmar Bergman’s films haunting, but “Persona” just would not let me go at all. I watched it on Monday and I keep thinking about it again and again. It is not that it is complicated. It is quite a short film, actually. It just made me think about so many things. And not all of them are inside my “comfort zone”.
A film is about relationship of two women – an ill actress who refuses to speak and her nurse. Like other Bergman’s films it doesn’t shy away from difficult themes and is a little shocking for me in places. But how beautiful the cinematography is! And how unusual but iconic actresses are! Liv Ulmann, Bergman’s lover is probably one of the most beautiful women I know. She is just WOW!
I thought that this film was about the different parts of our personality, how they fight and the stronger but not always better one wins. And also about relationships we build one with another, how we control and hurt each other. How everything at the end is egoistic and selfish. We are built this way. It is our safety mechanism, but with it we destroy each other.
I watched a little of “Casanova” with David Tennant and it is not entirely my cup of tea. David is sort of cute, but a touch too silly for me at times. The big plus is of course is that I didn’t notice before how blue his eyes are. I am back to worrying about new season of Dr. Who. ;(. Don’t worry, I am a worrier!
And I am back to work. It is lunch-time and I have got stacks to do which I was putting to one side during the Project time. Good job I like doing this stuff, otherwise it would have quickly driven me mad ;). But – My beautiful Amaryllis was waiting for me at the office! All double-flowers, white with some pink inside.
Biggest question is - when is it going to get WARM outside?
** I used this icon because it is black-and-white and "Persona" is black-and-white ;)

I've been looking forward to my spring garden for about a month now, but it's still covered in snow!

We had some snow yesterday. Clearly something is happening with the global warming.

I've never seen Persona, but I've always thought that Liv Ulmann was an amazing actress. Is it worth watching if one likes Bergman films?
And I've not seen the Tennant Casanova either, but I am curious. Perhaps I'll wait until I've seen a bit more of the new Doctor Who, to get used to David Tennant. Hee.

It is THE best Bergman's film for me at the moment. I can't stop thinking. Do you like his films?

May be I should have waited too.

Date: 2006-04-06 02:09 pm (UTC)I actually really like Casanova with David Tennant, but I can completely understand if it's not for you. I love silly when it's cute and not stupid, and I love DT's Casanova for being such a freewheeling, madcap, foolish character who always means well. Also, the writer of Casanova is Russell T. Davies - same guy who is the head writer/exec. producer of DW - both RTD and David Tennant really love and respect DW, so I don't think you need to worry. :)
I hope it gets warm for you soon! We had a beautiful few days of warmth last weekend, but this week it was back to being chilly again.

You see, I think I don't have any sense of humour because I never can appreciate sitcoms and similar things. My type of humour is something completely off-the wallish. Ah, I just can't wait for Dr. Who, that is all.!

Date: 2006-04-06 05:59 pm (UTC)And I honestly don't think that can be it, really. I think it's just that everyone's taste is different - that taste may be influenced by many things, but is really tied in to individuality.
But seriously, I think you are very right!

Date: 2006-04-06 07:03 pm (UTC)Btw, to answer your question from above - I am sure I have seen a few Ingmar Bergman films in a festival many years ago, but I don't remember which ones I saw. I need to refresh my memory because Bergman is both a classic and a master!

Date: 2006-04-06 08:09 pm (UTC)Persona could be a good one of Bergman's films to re-immerse, I liked "Wild strawberries" very much too , but "Persona" is even closer for me. May be because it is about women.
