I am having a week of holidays starting last Friday (yes, I took them so that I can watch the World Cup on my new HD TV!) . So far I am loving it:

South Africa / Mexico : 1/1 I don't have any interest in either of those teams but I am glad the host team scored!!!!!

France / Uruguay : 0/0 I sat through the whole of it , but I don't know why. The championship has just began but we have already got the most boring game of the World Cup 2010.

South Korea / Greece : 2/0 I am so sad - I have missed this! We went ice-skating and by the time we got home it was over! South Korea is one of the teams I got for the "bonkers sweepstake" we are having at work. I am deeply rooting for South Korea!

Argentina / Nigeria : 1/0 So far, Argentina is the strongest and the most interesting team I have seen. Messi is rather cute and Maradona is incredibly hilarious . I am going to watch every game with Argentina from now on, his antics are incredibly amusing!!!!!

England / USA : 1/1 Whut! England hasn't won, but this has been the first time ever that I could safely say I liked our team. The arrogance they displayed in the last World Cup has completely gone! If they continue to play this way, I might end up cheering for them. Even Rooney 2010 is completely different from Rooney 2006, he is twice as slim and twice as fast!

One slightly tangential thing; before the match ITV showed what from the words of British commentators was an advert from one of the USA networks for the match. It was one of the most OTT patriotic things I have ever seen (with youth bands matching, ominous music and all such things). I wonder if they just made it up - I tried to find the advert on Youtube but couldn't. If any of you ladies and gentlemen from USA have seen the advert IRL - would you lead me to it?? Thank you!!!!!

The teams I got in The Bonkers Sweepstake are:
1. Netherlands
2. Serbia
3. South Korea
4. Ghana.
The rules are incredibly complicated. :D

It was awesome *runs and hides*

EEEEEEEE! Thank you for the good news. I am cheering for them because they are my sweepstake team and also I generally cheer for them . :D I was wondering if Greece was just rubbish, but I am glad to hear that South Korea was good!

Greece was rubbish, but thankfully it doesn't mean South Korea was lucky. They did great and deserve every bit of this victory.

I missed both the SK vs Greece and Argentina vs Nigeria games (gonna watch the encore soon).
I am so disappointed that England tied with US. Can't stand USA and this is the first time I actually liked England as well.

I was falling asleep few times but then I kept thinking "Oh, no! There can't be another France/Uruguay 0:0 (they had FEW already) , this this statistically impossible. Someone going to score any minute! I must stay awake!"

I gave up 20 minutes in. I really don't like France and don't care for Uruguay at all so I just thought it was pointless to sit through it.

I can't speak about the ad, and I am curious--USA is an NBC network, and the World Cup here is on ABC/ESPN (in other words, not NBC). The ABC promo I caught was an idiotic trash talk thing between Russell Brand (? some skinny guy, in a movie?) and Will Ferrell...

From: [identity profile] lage-nom-ai.livejournal.com
Whoops, duh. I misread your post. Still, I feel like most ads here are still, "Um, soccer is important! And we might not suck this year! Please watch!" Ominous music is pretty likely, though. :D

heheheheh! here, this year is all ALL ABOUT BEER. In all the adverts, all the players are drenched in it (like the beer is the background of something) . :D

I actually caught a kind of clever budweiser ad today, about distractions during PK.

I think I found the ad you guys were talking about--though since it's ESPN, it's supposed to be kind of ironic:

I was all like "Ok, South Korea was good in 2002, they can't be good again?", so I didn't really try hard enough to get back home in time for the match. I am biting my elbows now.

I think my daughter would have been in a big puddle of tears too. :D I guess for me, this was honestly the first time when I wasn't embarrassed about the way England played so I enjoyed the game all the way through.

I only watched the second half of Argentina's game... they played well, imo. The brazilian commentators were saying their defence is weak, though I didn't see so much of that.

And I didn't watch the beginning of USA x England game, so I couldn't identify which was which in the field. I guessed the americans were in white...

Looking forward to tuesday, when Brazil will play North Korea :P

Well, I actually watched the South Korea-Greece match! :) It was a good game, though I missed the 1st goal as I was in the bedroom right then (oops!). Our commentators were duly impressed by the Koreans, ha. Fun facts; I've seen some of the players live as I went to one of the FC Seoul's games while in Seoul last year. Now, that was kinda fun experience. The Korean supporters are something else. *g*

I'm pretty indifferent to the World Cup, with me it's less the standard American indifference and more the fact that I am only really interested in sports in which I grew up attending games or playing. It just wasn't that big where I grew up, basketball, baseball, American football (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLJwG5aLuSs), volleyball, yes, soccer/football not so much. It has changed, though, I think. A lot more kids play it there now, and also the Hispanic and Latino population has gotten bigger and it's really big among those communities. In the park near our old house, matches seemed to be played every night now. Which is cool, I think.

(And it will always be called "soccer" here, because of American football. And yes, I realize it's a passing game mainly played by hands, I don't get the name either. Probably "handball" just sounded stupid!)

Even though I am indifferent the England-US tie was pretty awesome as it was unexpected. Also, this (http://30.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_l3x34bTiYX1qz6l95o1_500.jpg) is fantastic.

I do like the excitement of something that the whole world participates in, but as I am not a fan, I can't really get into to rooting for different teams or anything.

The Colbert Report did a piece (http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/312113/june-10-2010/sport-report---soccer-debate---marc-fisher---mark-starr) the same night as that Daily Show segment. I know that TDS is broadcast in the UK but I don't know about TCR, if you've never seen him, Colbert is playing of persona of himself that parodies ultra "patriotic" right-wing blowhards like Bill O'Reilly.

Oh, man, some of the stuff that WaPo guy says makes him look like an idiot. Americans don't crave "complexity" in sports. And all the time outs in televised sports here are annoying. But the other guy should not have made that "freak of nature" comment, I think. It wasn't funny. The Philadelphia line was, though. Colbert was just playing his part on the hooligan line, but that Fischer dude just sounded ignorant. Honestly, we've had mini riots after Superbowls and NBA championships in some places. Plus, some of the behaviour of parents at things like Little League is pretty appalling!

Also, I also was amused by the BP bit because BP's handling of the Gulf Spill has been appalling but really, people should know that it's actually an Anglo-American company, and that while as a corporation it is more important to the economy of the UK than the US, there are actually more Americans who work for it. Not that I've seen much Brit bashing, here. Most people are just appalled at the company itself and the way the our government has been handling things.

I am glad football is getting more popular! I am not at all sport-conscious myself; because it is one of the games that is played all over the world, it is probably one of rare games I find interesting, for the intentional aspect of it.

And it will always be called "soccer" here, because of American football. And yes, I realize it's a passing game mainly played by hands, I don't get the name either. Probably "handball" just sounded stupid!)

I think more I think on it, more I come to think the fact that in USA football is called differently to all over the world is not "just simple thing". I don't know how this has come about historically, but as you say, American football is not even played by feet and also it is a game that is only played in USA. Where football is a prompt name for the game played by feet and it is is called so in countries that don't even speak English (Russia, Korea, Japan, Brazil) , but USA is different in this regard to anyone else in the world. :D

I liked the match too, but for the different reason - this is the first time I liked English team! Heeeeee!I like that picture with Obama.

Yes, I believe one of the reasons it is so popular is that a version of it has always been played in many cultures throughout all of time. I was reading the other day that a version of it was played by a group of Native Americans. And of course, the current incarnation is played everywhere.

I suspect one of the reasons why it is not as popular here(apart from the obvious, the other sports leagues have huge contracts with the broadcast networks)is that it's a low scoring game, and you can have draws in it. With most of our really popular sports, the games will go into OT(or you simply play more innings in baseball)until someone wins. Hockey used to end in ties, but the NHL changed those rules some years, ago, now they have shoot offs to win. And hockey's not as popular as some other sports, here, though it is very popular in some regions.

Heh, yeah, like I said it will just always be known as "soccer" here. I think it would get too confusing for us, otherwise.

That picture of Obama is awesome. The tie also reminded me of this post (http://www.lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com/2010/06/medium-rare-futbol-blogging). I wonder if the ambassadors are just going to have to have two dinners now?

I don't know - the knockout stages usually have to end in a clear win. I think may be it has happened purely historically: USA had another popular sport, American football which is a bit more of a hands-on sport. However, here rugby is also very popular and this doesn't stop everyone liking football.

I think one of the reasons I like football because there are good teams from the countries that don't dominate in other sports. If it was another USA-dominated sport, I wouldn't have liked it as much.

If you want to watch the game and for some reason your network doesn't show re-runs (what, it happens!), one source I usually go to find dramas (*cough*AM*cough*) has it. Just an FYI.
