Films I liked: Men who hate women
Oct. 20th, 2009 05:41 pmMen who hate women/Män som hatar kvinnor (Sweden) has it's flaws but I still liked it very much. It is an adaptation of Stieg Larsson's novel but the "weakest thread" in the canvass of this movie is the story itself: it is quite standard serial killer thriller with Old Testament references. This could have been just one of those serial killer movies that come out in hundreds every year, and it even might soon become one – it seems like a perfect movie for a Hollywood re-make. But, directed by Niels Arden Oplev, this serial killer flick has become austerely beautiful, atmospheric and enigmatic. It's cinematography reminded me of "Insomnia" (Norwegian version) and paintings by Vilhelm Hammershoi – there is always something hidden in every frame, just beyond your reach. And hurray! In the film we also have an unconventional and absolutely awesome heroine Lisbeth (Noomi Rapace), bisexual, Goth and computer hacker! Also, the serial killer storyline unfolded quite neatly. I really recommend this one to the fans of whodunit crime stories.
