I think it must be difficult to make a film centered around sensation that is not visually or sound related, like touch , and it is almost magical to watch a film that gives you a perfect interpretation of this sensation. I kept thinking "How does this work?" all the way through the new Dutch film Blind from Tamar van den Dop. The film tells a story of love (and pain) between a young blind man Ruben and his caretaker Marie in a special way that switches some centres in you brain and allows you to perceive everything though your touch, in the same way Ruben does. Both leads Joren Seldeslachts and Halina Reijn are intensely beautiful and both are wonderful actors.

The film evokes many facets of Andersen's "Ice Queen", the book Marie reads to Ruben. I have only read "ice Queen" as a child, in a Russian translation that must have been adapted for children. Watching "Blind" made me pick up the book again , and I found it to be much deeper than I remember.

This movie sounds fascinating, and it looks beautiful, too. There's another fascinating - and very different - movie about blindness and love (and cruelty), called Proof. It's not the math movie but an Aussie film with Russell Crowe and Hugo Weaving. I haven't seen it in years, but it's really stayed with me.

I finally watched it today. I think I sobbed for good 10 minutes after that last heart wrenching shot of Ruben in the orchard... :( Even though I was fully aware I was in for a visual and emotional treat, and even putting my love for The Snow Queen aside, I honestly didn't expect it would hit so close to home, especially when it came to how much I could actually personally relate to Marie's character at this present state of mind and body that I'm in. She was almost like this photographic negative of my own self-image. Rather disturbing, I must admit. Oh, well... Thank you, as ever, for informing me of gems such as this. Oh, and I'll be so bold as to ask - keep 'em coming! :)

Oh, I've just noticed this still:

which wasn't in the movie! I'm kinda glad the director left the ending a bit more ambiguous.

I have seen this cap (so lovely!) - I didn't include it along with the others because of the spoilery content. But isn't it one of the moments whilst MArie was still working with Ruben?

It looks beautiful! I'll look for it on Netflix. (Still waiting for that neat vampire/boy story to become available.)
