alexandral: (Generation Kill - Brad - sceptical)

Generation Kill has affected me in a way I would have never expected - I am beginning to be interested in politics. As in READING NEWS DAILY! I hope this goes away soon because the news nowdays seem to be so worrying!! For one thing, prices on gas are rising dramatically in the UK!

And may be I will be posting about USA elections soon? But seriously, would it not be great if an African-American could win the elections?

Also, from this article , BBC NEWS: For those too young to remember the Cold War, comes the following verse by Sting:

We share the same biology,
regardless of ideology.
Believe me when I say to you,
I hope the Russians love their children too

Did Sting imply here that Russians may or may not love their children? Puzzling!

I NEED TO STOP NOW!!!!

I'd never really concentrated on the lyrics because I'm not a huge Sting fan:

In Europe and America there's a growing feeling of hysteria
Conditioned to respond to all the threats
In the rhetorical speeches of the Soviets
Mister Krushchev said, 'We will bury you'
I don't subscribe to this point of view
It'd be such an ignorant thing to do
If the Russians love their children too

How can I save my little boy
From Oppenheimer's deadly toy?
There is no monopoly on common sense
On either side of the political fence
We share the same biology
Regardless of ideology
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

There is no historical precedent to put
the Words in the mouth of the president
There's no such thing as a winnable war
It's a lie we don't believe anymore
Mister Reagan says 'We will protect you'
I don't subscribe to this point of view
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too
We share the same biology
Regardless of ideology
What might save us, me and you
Is if the Russians love their children too

There was an explanation here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russians_(song)

I assume what he was saying: "let's hope the Russians love their children, too or we're all doomed" or something like that ... :P

yeah, I agree with Koala.

I think the song is also poking at the idea of dehumanizing the "enemy", just the tendency of saying things like "the Russians", "the Chinese", "the Iranians", the "Germans", "the Americans", "fill_in_the_blank" and not specifying that you are primarily referring to the actions of the government not the people. Oh, boy that was a long babbling sentence!
