alexandral: (The last of the Mohicans - so happy)
[personal profile] alexandral
My latest favourite Korean actor was born in 1968 and this makes him much more of my own age group than any other Korean actor I like. But this is not his main appeal. :D Park Shin Yang is one of incredibly lucky (or talented) people who don't need to be Adonis-like to be attractive. It is all in the way he moves, speaks, laughs. Something intangible that can be called charm. To add to this, he is fantastically good at his job. He has scooped all possible awards in Korea for his latest role in "Money's Warfare" , a drama that combines dark humor, twisty intelligent plot and social commentary with lovely romance.

Trivia:
Graduated from : Russia’s Shchepkin Theatre College
Hobbies: Ballet, Gymnastics, Ice hockey, Jazz dancing
Ambassador of Tolstoy: "Park Shin Yang was appointed as Ambassador of Tolstoy for the ‘Tolstoy exhibition’ at the Seoul Museum of History." (from his official web-site)

His strong connections with Russia make me particular happy. And I love every picture I found of him:

А он, оказывается, в Щепке учился? Да еще примерно в то же время, как я училась в ГИТИСе? Забавно, тогда я его почти наверняка видала в театрально-студенческой тусовке Москве в те годы.

WOW! This is fascinating! MAy be this is why I really REALLY like his style of acting. MAny of Korean actors (and especially actresses) either never move a single muscle on their beautiful faces or totally overdo it and make CRAZY FACES (I have even got used to it, it is like national acting style). But PArk Shin Yang is a great actor.

I really REALLY like his style of acting.

I agree that acting in Japanese dramas (and majority of storylines) is more nuanced and that dramas usually are very deep (especially in comparison with majority of Western shows) . It is just that I find Korean actors much more attractive in general . :D But I find myself more and more drawn into japanese dramas . I am watching "Around 40" at the moment - have you watched any of it?

I like him too. And the drama is excellent, I can't wait for subtitles.

You are absolutely heroic. Subbing seems such a lenghty procedure!

Subbing seems such a lenghty procedure!

He's lovely isn't he? I've yet to see "Money's Warfare" - I've taken a peek at it though and liked what I saw. I'll probably watch it once I stop obessing over UTW, ha. I'm half way through "Resurrection" now.

YAY! "Money's Warfare" is one of these dramas that get even better as they progress, the plot is very twisty and unpredictable. Very strong drama. When it ended I was surprised that it was usch a hit in Korea, it is not just middle-of-the-road romance story at all.

I totally second UTW obsession. I am going to re-watch "Mawang" of holidays.. Is "Resurrection" any good?

Yes it is. It's sort of like a practise run for Mawang. Not quite there yet but the promise is already showing. I'll probably do a rec post once I'm done.

My first taste of Park Shin Yang was a movie called Promise or "Yaksok." Park Shin yang is a mob boss who falls in love with a doctor (Jun Do Yun from Secret Sunshine) and due to certain circumstances ends up going to jail.
I cried my eyes out. Park shin yang had me totally reeled in and I was devastated. It is pretty old but if you can find it you must watch!

Thank you so much for the rec! I find these old films hard to find with English subs but I will definitely try. I adore Jun Do Yun. I also heard that PSY's last film "Big Swindle" was a huge success but I find it difficult to find it too.

Oh! This sounds so intriguing! Which anime are they from (I googled and they seem to be anime characters :D)?

From: [identity profile] arathisiewen.livejournal.com
I want to say the correct title is Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon, but here in the US we got it as Sailor Moon; the live-action one is only in Japan but you can find it on alluc.org and surfthechannel.com to watch I believe.

YAY! One of my friends also recommended "Sailor Moon". I am tempted to watch it. :D

Definitely was the Japanese version with subtoitles, chock full of things that weren't put on over here because it was brought over as a child's cartoon and they had to cut stuff out.

Date: 2008-05-23 09:06 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com
This is why I prefer subtitled versions. Anime is so NOT child's cartoons. Also the voices of dubbers usually are annoying.

Date: 2008-05-23 04:38 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] arathisiewen.livejournal.com
I know! Well, the whole thing about anime not being for children that is - they cut SOOO much out so they can fit it into 30 minutes and for it to be child appropriate.

With the voice of Darien in the Sailor Moon dub, I was thrilled because it was a voice I actually knew, like Michael Rosenbaum of Smallville being the voice of someone in GLADIUS.

Still, some of the themes? How do they hide THEM?

Usually official releases are better like this. I am watching "Blood+" with some subtitles which seem to be using the voices of some very-second-rate actors and they sound terrible.

Well, they totally cut them out that's how - like I bet the episode where Sailor Moon faces Queen Beryl in a full hour long, but they cut stuff out for commercials and split it into two episodes... so you totally miss the footage where the other Scouts die horrible, horrible deaths

Date: 2008-05-24 09:58 am (UTC)

Oh, dear! ** shudderes ** I like downloads precisely because they don't have commercials.

From: [identity profile] arathisiewen.livejournal.com
Well, the commercials weren't the bad part (okay, seeing "Baby Wets-A-Lot" while watching something I KNEW wasn't along those lines was a pain), it was that they made it for children. I saw a Japanese episode or something and I was like... woah...

Oooooooooo. Very nice pictures, I agree. And I also share the same sentiments that he is not Adonis-like but still so charming and appealing. And he certainly sounds bright, with his educational background and hobbies (eeeee! ballet? gymnastics?). I must pick up again on my War of Money watch :)

I have seen him dancing in dramas and I must vouch that he is an awesome dancer. MAle gymnastics? I like. :D

How far are you with "Money's Warfare"? I found few of the first episodes quite upsetting to watch but it is overall may be my favourite drama of the last month.

I am still in the 3rd of 4th ep. Past the sister's wedding definitely. I think I found the first couple of eps a little upsetting too, while I was in the mood for something bouncy and happy. The lead actress (Park Jin Hee) is very pretty though! Park Shin Yang has been casted to star alongside Moon Geun Young (from My Little Bride and Innocent Steps! Eeeeeeeee!) in a drama scheduled to be aired this Oct. I can't wait!! :D

I woulnd't call it a bouncy drama but it has some hilarious moments later on. But I would rather describe it as a plotty drama with elements of dark comedy. Also the main romance (and kissing :D) is lovely. And I love the long-haired guy too.

The lead actress (Park Jin Hee) is very pretty though!

She is very pretty and I really like the herouine, may be the best female herouine I have seen so far.

I have heard of this too, but I don't think this drama and it's cast has been confirmed. Everyone on soompi was saying that the age difference is too big. I don't have a problem whatsoever with these things.
