alexandral: (Finding Neverland - my precious child)
[personal profile] alexandral
We have watched “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe ” this morning and I liked it very much. I was crying all the way through the second half. I have made an attempt to write a review for [livejournal.com profile] koalathebear below. I wish so much you could go with us!

The story begins when four children (Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy) find the magic land of Narnia behind the Wardrobe. The land is ruled by wicked White Witch because of the long absence of real king Aslan the Lion. Now Aslan returned and the battle between good and evil begins. One of the brothers, Edmund, is deceived by the White Witch to betray his family. There is a law of the great magic of the land of Narnia that all the betrayers belong to the White Witch. When the Witch claims the life of Edmund, king Aslan gives his life instead of the boy’s. The Witch doesn’t know that when the innocent is killed instead of the guilty, the sacrificing stone will break and the death will be reversed.

I don’t know if film was very true to the book, or not, because it was a while since I have read it. The film had me glued to my seat for two and a half hours (except when my daughter wanted to go to the toilet ;)).

The cast was superb. Children were chosen perfectly: responsible Peter trying to feel the place of his father, cautious Susan, slightly an outsider Edmund and lovely and brave Lucy. They all have beautiful, but not over-pretty faces, very characteristic and unforgettable. Their acting was good.
I loved in particular Tilda Swinton as the White Witch – that inimitable mixture of beauty and ugliness, whiteness and dirt.
My new favourite James McAvoy was delightful as Mr. Tumnus, just delightful. I would have not even known it was him if I wasn’t looking out for him, so different from “Macbeth”.
And of course, animated Aslan was the star of the show. How beautiful! How magnificent! Lions are my favourite animals at the moment.
My husband and I also fell in love with the Mr. and Ms. Beaver (he seems to think they are just like us in fur ;) They were so funny!

Special effects were amazing, if slightly reminding of the Lord of the Rings. But there are similarities in inhabitants of these two books so I would expect it anyway.

And all together, the impression of the story was that of full of love. This is the story I so love – battle between good and evil, magic, magnificent king saving the live of the silly but good inside boy. I cried so much during the scene of Aslan’s murder – all this filthy henchmen of the White Witch mocking him, cutting his hair. And he could have killed them all in an instant, but he has given his word that he will give his life for the boy’s. The scene was really dramatic. I cried even if I knew that he will be alive again. That was the scene that I thought was the best, even if I would not dare to watch it again. I was so happy when Aslan was alive again!

I have also liked very much the moment when Aslan killed the White Witch – with one quick roar and a snap! And of course nothing could beat the coronation scene - it brought the proud tears: Peter the Magnificent, Susan the Gentle, Edmund the Just and Lucy the Valiant!

Update: I have to mention that "Chronicles of Narnia" is very much DISNEY and children's movie and can't really be compared with the Lord of the Rings. (agree on that with [livejournal.com profile] dangermousie. It was a big plus for us as we could go together as a family and all enjoy it. And i LOVE children's movies!

Oh how much I want to see it!!! I will have to wait to next week since this weekend I am kind of busy.

You wrote a great review! Thanks so much!!! It looks so lovely and magical. When I watched the trailer I decided that I had to watch it!

I know James McAvoy is there *he he* another good reason to go see the movie. I like Tilda Swinton since I watched Orlando, and when I saw the trailer I was pretty sure her impersonation of the Witch would be magnificent... for what you say, I was right in my assumption ;)

Oh thank you! That is just the kind of review I wanted. I'm so glad that you enjoyed it. I'm sure I'll enjoy it, too. When I eventually see it that is .... *sigh* .... :D

You know - I think I'll cry during Aslan's death, too. I found that upsetting in the book and if I see it, I'll be a mess! Thank you again!!

Well I still read children's books, I love Disney and have a child's heart. I hope I'm still like that when I'm old so I'm sure I'll enjoy the movie. Growing up doesn't mean leaving behind the things I found beautiful as a child. :)

The movie sounds fabulous, thank you for the review, Alexandra.
I'll definitely try to see it, most likely after things settle down a bit after Christmas. And I'll drag my friend, too.

I can't wait to see Tilda Swinton as the White Witch. And Liam Neeson voicing Aslan. I've only seen the previews, but the kids look very well cast.
