This is a happy day - it is [livejournal.com profile] syliasyliasylia's birthday! Happy birthday dear Sylia! You are a dear friend who is always cheerful and whose presence on LJ is a delight to everyone!

Mr. Alexander and I were marathoning "Pride and Prejudice" (BBC, 1995) yesterday. It never fails to be so great! And Mr. Alexander loves it which never fails to amuse me!

Mr Darcy is deeply troubled

His tea tastes foul.

His billiard game doesn't amuse him anymore.

So he takes a bath.

and broods.

After that he stares severely at his dancing partners

and broods some more.

His sleep avoids him.

"I shall conquer this", he says.

"I shall ride

in very hot weather.

I shall ponder...

And I shall jump into the lake...

And then I will say "Happy birthday dear Sylia!! Have a splendid day!"

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ** throws confetti **

Me too! Me too! And the lake scene, of course. It was my first scene of "Pride and Prejudice" . One day I came back from work to find my mother watching P&P. And it was the very moment of Mr.Darcy jumping into the lake. OMPH! I still remember the shock (good shock) I experienced. :D

Hehe... I forgot to mention in my previous comment how envious I am that your husband is one of those rare men who enjoy a Jane Austen adaptation. Those are really hard to find, lemme tell ya! ;)

I am really quite surprised myself as he is very no-nonsense as far as films and TV goes. I think it is Austen's wit that "gets" him, he loves Mr and Mrs Bennet and Mr. Collins. He was roaring with laughter.

*drools* *sighs* *drools some more* Thanks for the picspam :)

I do love that version :)
Although I just recently watched (on Netflix) the 1980s which had a wonderful screen-play, a wonderful Lizzy, a wonderful supporting cast and an absolutely stiff as a board, atrocious Darcy. I do recommend it but if you watch be prepared for an almost zobiesque leading man.

Wow -- the 80s version was the first I ever saw and I always rather liked David Rintoul's Mr. Darcy. But if I'd seen him after Colin Firth, I'd probably have felt the same way as you!

LOL I think that's the problem ... Colin totally spoiled me; his Darcys expressions were so much more nuanced than Davids that it's very difficult, now, to enjoy that performance (for me). But overall I really did enjoy that 80s version - it was nice that the focus was so much more on Lizzy.

I am so glad you liked! You and [livejournal.com profile] soniag make want to check the 80-s version. I adore 80s version of "Jane Eyre" with Timothy Dalton.

"Pride and Prejudice" is one of my favourite books, the first book I read completely in English. ** laughs **. I also like the recent "Pride and Prejudice" adaptation with Mathew McFadyen but not as much as 1995-s one, it lost so much of Austen's language.

My favorite romance of that era is definitely Jane Eyre followed very closely by Austen's Persuasion. And in my book there hasn't been a better adaptation of JE since the Timothy Dalton one ... the recent one wasn't horrible but the script set my teeth on edge. And if you're in the mood, the Hinds version of Persuasion is excellent ... highly recommended!

Although I enjoyed the McFadyen version of P&P and thought it watchable I find that, being a fan of the language/manners of that era, it just wasn't done right IMHO ;)

And definitely take a look at the 80s version of P&P if you get a chance ... just be prepared for a much stiffer Darcy. And if you like Period Costume Dramas ... I bet it'll work for you :)

I must say I agree that although I do like the 2005 P&P, its script (at least parts of it) was what I liked least. I also love the Amanda Root Persuasion!

You know, as I was writing my comment I totally blanked out on her name *redface* Thanks for refreshing my sieve of a memory LOL I LOVE that movie ... whenever I need to feel at peace after a crazy day, that's the DVD I throw in and as soon as that music starts I feel myself relaxing :)

I adore Toby Stephens but I must agree , the recent adaptation of "Jane Eyre" isn't as good. Not enough passion. :D

And I love love love "Persuasion" with Hinds, it is one of my favourite Austen's adaptation. BUT! I am also a huge fan of the latest adaptation with Rupert Penry-Jones. I know that not many people liked it, may be just me. :D

From: [identity profile] earlgrayhot.livejournal.com
I'm surprised you feel that there wasn't enough Passion in the Toby version of JE ... I found it much, much hotter than the Timothy version but for me the latest version really skimmed over Janes childhood and then the "it wasn't my fault" when Rochester talks of his marriage which just makes me want to scream ... if there was one thing I loved about that character is his acceptance of his fault in his marriage fiasco! And in addition to all that St. John Rivers just wasn't good at all ... I loved the restrained passion of that character (in the book & Timothy's JE) but this guy just wasn't able carry it off!

I am also a huge fan of the latest adaptation with Rupert Penry-Jones

Yeah, put me on the list who didn't like it! I felt that they took too many liberties with the story and then at the end when Anne is running all over Bath *shudders* that's just so out of character (as set forth in the book) that it totally turns me off! But Wentworth was very enjoyable to watch and drool over a little ;) Thank goodness for MI-5, gives me a chance to look at him a lot *blushes*

Oh, I haven't gotten that far! I think I stopped in the middle somewhere. I meant to re-watch it properly but I never did.

My main point of liking that adaptation is Wentworth. When he is looking at Anne and he pretends to not be looking? ** swoon ** The ending was somehow silly, I agree.

Oh, how wonderful! You'll probably have gathered by now that I'm an Austen fan. As others have said, it's just lovely that Sylia's birthday means we all get to share this!

Anyone who appreciates good literature couldn't fail to like Austen, I don't think - be they gentleman or lady!

I think Austen's social commentary is so intersting and fresh that her books are indeed for anyone! Her command of English is also incredible.

To be perfectly honest, I've never seen the BBC miniseries with Colin Firth, only the recent movie adaptation :). Imdb says the series was shown here at one point on TV but I don't remember that at all. It's also possible that ten years ago I wasn't interested in it. But I'm fairly sure I would've noticed if it was shown again in recent years. So I'm still waiting for it.

Oh, you must watch it ! (seeing Mr.Alexander likes it so I feel pretty safe to recommend). It is brilliant.

For one thing, it holds British "Sexiest scene of all times". :D

I would love to watch it. Even without the "Sexiest scene of all times" :D. But I've no idea when it will be shown again. Maybe I should write to our national television. Or start a petition. :)

I can send you my DVDs, if you would like. They are in English with English-only subs and region 2.

You mean you would send me your DVDs, I watch them and then I sent them back? Hmmm, interesting idea. And a very kind offer!
Unfortunately, my recent experience with 'Becoming Jane' showed me that my English does have its limits. And since this a similar movie I'm afraid I would have a lot of difficulties following the dialogue without some German help in the form of subtitles. It's not an acoustic problem, I don't even know the words.

I've looked up the DVDs and put them on my Amazon watchlist. Maybe I'll buy them at one point.
Once again many thanks for the offer. :)

From: [identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com
Actually I just meant I'll send the DVDs to YOU. :D This adaptation could be different to what you experienced with "Becoming Jane". I remember my first years in the UK and I used to find BBC adaptations very easy to understand. Very good for your speaking English and you can always switch on English subtitles.

They are usually have very clear and crisp dialogues. American films are the totally different matter, people in them often mumble and speak "naturally" and one can hardly understand anything anyways.

The offer still stands, if you need it!

Randomly jumping in here ... Hi! Here via [livejournal.com profile] dangermousie's journal. No Darcy can live up to Colin Firth's Darcy in my mind. It's my favourite book and I've seen a few adaptations - saw the Laurence Olivier version first - but after seeing the BBC/A&E version, there was no going back.

Anyway, thanks for this great post with almost all of my favourite Darcy moments. I almost feel like it's my birthday. ;) I really need to have a P&P adaptations marathon again sometime soon. Have you by any chance read Pamela Aidan's "An Assembly Such as This"?
