alexandral: (GoT - anim Drogo come at me bro)
Life

Just last Friday I was in Prague, doing many things in this gorgeous city: walking long walks along Prague's beautiful streets and parks, eating nice food, and visiting Prague Opera and Prague Zoo (which is one of the top 10 in the world).

Now I am back, and as much as I love my job it all seems like a bit of a shock. It also seems that the sub-system that I have just started doing for the Uni's new Website needs to be ready for the 1st of September which is very very soon, so I will probably have to work like mad for the next few weeks (also I am going to Scotland to visit my friend this weekend). In short - crazy times ahead and my head feels empty.

Game of Thrones

I haven't heard any casting or other GoT news and I haven't really done much of the "proper" reading of "Dance with Dragons". I skimmed very quickly once, but now I am reading very slowly. I took the book with me on holidays but I am still at the beginning of the book.

Please let me know if there have been any exciting casting news.

The only good piece of news I have seen is from Shadowlocked, here. It seems that HBO has good intentions towards "Game of Thrones" . HBO co-president Richard Pepler apparently said that "We told George we’d go as long as he kept writing" . This is a bit vague and unclear, but at least thins means we are going to have at least 5 seasons.

Photographer Amanda Killen has made some awesome pictures from the Game of Thrones season 2 filming sets. I adore the photographs of what everyone thinks are the New Gods of Westeros (The Seven: the Father, the Mother, the Warrior, the Crone, the Smith, the Maid, and the Stranger):

Other fannish things

I have watched few films and TV shows on the laptop whilst on holidays:

- Mentalist. I am so thankful to the show's creators for everything, especially for the great closure of Red John storyline.

- Nikita. I might and I might not continue watching this show. I have periods of interest followed by periods of non-interest.

- We went to see a classic motorbike show yesterday, so I am re-starting my "Sons of Anarchy" watch.

- Midas (Korean drama) which suffered badly from Kdrama second-half syndrome. Jang Hyuk was very hot with a short haircut and wearing sharp suits, but I was more interested in No Min Woo's character.

- Royal Family (Korean drama) which was GOOD but I didn't like the ending.

- I finally watched "Inglorious Basterds" which I liked much more than I expected to. Christoph Waltz (the Nazi Colonel Hans Landa) makes the movie and steals the focus from Brad Pitt and everyone else.

- I also watched a Canadian zombie movie "Stake Land" which was good (if you like zombie movies).

PS: How have you been? I hope everything is good!

I guess nothing says "Alexandra is obsessed" as making icons. They are mostly from the recent episodes and reflect my obsession with Nikita's hair, Michael's and Owen's tattoos and various pairings (as I can't make my mind yet) :Michael/Alex and Michael/Nikita. The icons are free to share, if you need any text added please let me know.

I have finally made my mind about my favourite pairing in Nikita: it is Michael/Alex all the way!!!! Thom has died, Nikita is one-woman-bullet, and we have scenes like the one below between Alex and Michael:

I also got to the Russian-heavy parts of the show and I am so disappointed. Russian language was really quite terrible in these episodes: I could not understand a thing. What happened to not-so-terrible Russian of the earlier episodes?

And they missed elementary things like the fact that Russian surnames change the ending depending on the gender of the person. For example, any males with the same surname will be Udinov, but any females will be Udinova, with the "a" on the end which is clearly pronounceable. So Alex, of course, will be Alexandra Udinova. I must say: things like that bother me even more than the language. This means the creators haven't done any elementary research. This bother me even more than the terribleness of the language or the fact that Russians communicate using bad English when they are alone, instead of .. you know.. Russian?

At the same time! Alex is a daughter of Russian oligarch! Her father was "well creepy" as my daughter said, but her full name is Alexandra!

I might be wrong, but poor Nathan is so destined to die, he is most definitely just a filler character created with the sole purpose to be killed by Division.

I just got to the episode 17! Spoilers for the episode 17 )

Lately, I have been talking quite a bit about Nikita (2010), spamming [livejournal.com profile] koalathebear's journal with rants. I have suddenly got an urge to start watching it again, and so I did. I am marthoning the available episodes with the speed of light. I have got my Nikita love back! This is probably my favourite franchise (I have seen and loved both films, "Nikita" and "Point of no return" and 1997 "La Femme Nikita" series), so I am so so glad that this installment is as good as the other ones.

First things first: I have seen many reviewers hailing this new Nikita TV show as paragon of feminism and racial equality. I don't think the show lives up it's reputation, not quite 100%. Nikita is indeed cast as a woman of colour, but she has very Western features. And add here my personal bee in the bonnet: Maggie Q is incredibly thin. Even more, the role of the single "stupid, bitchy and violent" character is given to an African American actress. And even more again, in the 9 episodes I have watched, we already have seen plenty of stereotypical Chinese folks (they all belong to triads) and of course, evil Russians (they all want to kill USA senators!). Yes, this is a show about women and it has several strong female roles. But this is what the premise of Nikita always has been and the credit here should to the originator, Luc Besson, not to the creators of 2010 version.

This all said, I am not complaining, I just want to set the records straight. I am LOVING the show and I am so glad that my favourite franchise is back!

The story: Takes off where the films "Nikita" and "Point of no return" have left: Nikita has left Division. So, in relation to the 1997 "La Femme Nikita" (which ended with Michael leaving Division and Nikita staying as the organisation's leader) this is an alterna-reality. However, the 2010 show borrowed few characters and several stories and situations from the 1997 show. The physical layout of Division is also almost identical to the way it was in 1997 show.

The characters:
Nikita: As [livejournal.com profile] koalathebear predicted, after 9 episodes I have got de-sensitized to Nikita's scrawniness. Maggie Q is a good actress and she posesses that rageful streak that makes her believable as an assassin. Nikita is a woman who can kill anyone because she has no limits, she doesn't even know what the word limit means. She is very efficient and enjoys mentoring; in this regard she reminds me of the way Madeline was protrayed in 1997 show.

Alex: is my favourite female character in this show. She is more as the old Nikita used to be, so may be this is why I like her the most. Alex's character grows and changes, where Nikita's character is more static. I think the show done a very clever thing introducing the character of Alex: she is the old Nikita for any fans of the old Nikita.I am shipping her with Tom (please tell me he if he is going to die anytime soon, I need spoilers)

Michael: I am so sorry, Roy Dupuis, Shane West might end up to be my favourite Michael of all times. I don't even know where to begin to describe how delicious he is.

The evil people: Amanda is gorgeously creepifying or creepifyingly gorgeous, take your pick. Percy is the robotic face of the evil. My favourite evil dude so far is the Russian guy, Ari Tasarov. . I am going to love to hate him:

I had to giggle, though. Do you know what the name of the Russian evil organization is? Gogol! Gogol is the name of the famous Russian 19th century novelist! Who was big on humanism and social satire! Imagine a British black ops organisation being called Dickens or Austen? For some reason, this amuses me immensely. Here is a portrait of Gogol:

PS: Koalathebear wanted to know how well the actors in the show speak Russian. I did some pondering and soul searching, and actually there a definite improvement since "Alias".
