Hi! I'd say that you don't need to know the rest of the series AT ALL to get the book. (And in fact, I've only completed The Deerslayer and read half of The Prairie...). The publications order is, the best to my knowledge, the one given by Wikipedia. He wrote Deerslayer 10-11 years after LOTM... The chronology in terms of Natty's age goes Deerslayer-LOTM-Pathfinder-Pioneers-Prairie.
