This is something I find almost embarrassing to admit because I am in a small minority – I can't understand a hype surrounding "Pirates of Caribbean". Johnny Depp is definitely one of the most gorgeous blokes that have ever lived and Keira Knightly is a very comely lass. BUT!! I do confess embarrassing fact that when I watched the first film I thought "Hmm? This film is in 250 best films of all times on IMDB?" and when I watched the second film.. I confess I didn’t finish it. This all makes me feel slightly worried..

I must get to the bottom of it and Friday seems to be a good day for a poll!!!

[Poll #995325]

PS2 : If you like/dislike the series I would love to hear why!!!

Update LJ is not working well for me again!! I apologise very much but I will have to answer your comments tomorrow!

I just saw At World's End last night. I was very unimpressed. I would only recommend seeing it if you'd liked the first two and wanted to see how the story ended. Otherwise... it's not worth it. You already saw the best film out of them, the first, and the other two were more "Let's cash in on this cow that got bigger than anyone ever expected."

I didn't quite understand the Jack/Jack pairing, but I nearly-hate Keira Knightley and Jack's the only character (other than Norrington) I particularly enjoyed. And even then, I had to watch it twice to totally get him. He rather wore himself out the second and third movies.

I watched "At World's End" last week and may be because I had very low expectations I really quite liked it. Norrington is so fabulous!!

I'll admit I liked the first one best, but I think the two others do interesting things with the whole pirate-genre. Also the ending of "At World's End" was very good and not what I expected.

I got to see "At the world's end" last week and may be because I didn't expect much I liked it. And the ending was GREAt (apart of the fact that they seem to be gearing up for the new sequel)!!

warning: overly opinionated comment below. :D

How could be so many of great people on my friend's list be wrong?

Why does it have to be an issue of right or wrong? :) Taste is so subjective...none of us like all the same things, and we like what we like for our own reasons. We can certainly share those reason for liking or disliking things but as I've written before, in the end everyone gets to decide for themselves and there's nothing wrong with your taste being very different even from people who you respect/trust/like a lot. That shouldn't mean that there's anything wrong with you or with them. :)

I have to admit, that's why I almost never recommend anything to anyone. I'm happy to state that *I* like something, but I never expect that anyone else will share my opinion. If others do, that's great, and if not, that's fine. too! I personally hate to be judged for my taste if others don't agree with me, and I would never presume to judge someone else for the (non-harmful)things they like...diversity is a wonderful thing! :D

I really enjoyed the first PoC film - it was good lighthearted fun with an actual plot and interesting characters. It made me laugh. It was also much better than the disaster I'd been expecting for a film that's based on a Disney theme park attraction. I haven't seen the second film, and I'm on the fence about seeing the third. I love Johnny Depp and his Jack Sparrow was the main attraction about the first film - he was hilarious, witty and incredibly charismatic.

I've very sorry if I sound cranky in this comment, alexandral! I see now that you deleted that line in your post. If you want, feel free to delete my comment, too. I apologize again.
From: [identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com
As I mentioned before, I agree with what you say whole heartedly and I had updated the post because of it before seeing your comment. The only thing sometimes is that I feel that with some friends I have very similar tastes and when our tastes differ I get a moment of "OMPH! We don't really have similar tastes". But as you say, no one really has absolutely the same tastes!! More often there is rather affinity in the attitudes then in tastes..

I also try not to recommend things to anyone, especially recently - so many things of what I am really enjoying at the moment are the things none has heard of!

I got to see "At the world's end" and it was actually rather fun!

I never could understand all that hype about "Pirates". I didn't like even the first film. In fact, 1st Pirates seemed quite dull for me; I watched it in the cinema with friends, so I couldn't leave. Otherwise, I'd leave for sure. For me as a film it is quite mediocre. Johnny Depp was good there, yeah, but I've seen better roles by him... So I never wanted to watch 2d or 3d films of the series.

I watched the third film last week and because I didn't have very high expectations I rather liked it. But I agree - I completely don't understand the hype!

I love Pirates of the Caribbean for the simple fact that it's about pirates :) I'm a nut for pirates, I think I have seen them all, from Errol Flynn, to Maureen O'Hara and Tyrone Power in Black Swan to the Buccaneer and so on.
So just for the fun and the love of pirates, I think all three parts are good movies. You just don't have to expect any deep thoughts - it is popcorn entertainment :)

See, I loved the first movie almost entirely because Johnny Depp was awesome and clearly having a wonderful time (and Geoffrey Rush was also fantastic.) The second movie dragged a bit, but I’d still watch for the Johnny. But now my dislike of Keira Knightley is bordering on fanatical (SHE IS THE SAME IN EVERY SINGLE FILM, ARGH!) and my indifference to Orlando Bloom is turning into dislike and … I think I’ll wait for this one on DVD!

Oh, Johnny Depp is sooooo good as Jack I can marry him. :D

I went to see "At the world's end" and I liked it quite a bit. I think for me the problem with the first two films for me was that I did see them on DVD on our not-so-large TV.. One can enjoy these films so much more on the big screen because special effects are rather very fabulous on a big screen.. (But you of course have your HUGE TV set!!! :D)

I enjoy the movies a lot because I think they are colorful, fun and don't take themselves too seriously. I am also a sucker for swashbucklers and a wet Orlando Bloom. I like Liz/Will OTP quite a lot, as well.

This said, if you don't care for the first too, I can't see how the third one would change your mind as apparently it's more of the same :)

I was going to answer your poll questions till I got to the second one and I realized I have no idea which movie is which. That should give you an idea of how I feel about PotC.

Don't be embarrassed about feeling the movies are just kind of "eh", because I feel the same way. I saw the first one because everyone said it was wonderful. I watched and I just didn't think so. I think the movie are geared toward teenagers and young adults.

So I don't have a like or dislike for the PotC movies I just don't think about them all that much. :)

On a side note we watched "Pan's Labyrinth" the other night and I loved it! Such a wonderful movie and very thought provoking.

I am so glad you like "Pan's labyrinth". (I finished "Fool Moon" which was GREAT but didn't have as much Harry/Murphy as I wanted, it all rather about HArry And Susan!)

I really wasn’t thrilled with the first two movies either. I can’t tell you exactly why, but I just didn’t find them that great. I’m kind of relieved that someone else thinks like me because I remember reading some lj posts about how the movie was wonderful and perfect and feeling a little left out, so yay! I still haven’t watched the last one, but I am going to, I’m just curios to se how it ends. Oh, and of course I want to see Johnny Depp (wonderful, just wonderful) ;)

Christ, it's so far from being an amazingly good film trilogy. In my view, it's Hollywood getting big budget entertainment right in some ways for once. But that's about as far as it goes. Popcorn movies. I wouldn't rewatch, I wouldn't fangirl excessively. I really enjoy Jack Davenport but I'm actually getting kind of tired of Jack Sparrow and REALLY tired of people saying he's hottest ever. No, he's a dirty pirate. I mean dirty as in unhygienic, hasn't showered or seen a tooth brush in a century. That's so far from being hot. I'm annoyed by Keira and I can sort of put up with Orlando (more in 2nd film than 1st).

Very overhyped, but like I said, big budget entertainment. It's bound to be.

I'm a big PoTC fan.. *shrugs* I can see it wouldn't be for everyone though. I enjoyed AWE but not sure you would. Mostly I love the characters and I adore Age of Sail stuff.. the plots are a bit crazy but yeah, it's just my kind of thing :)

Pirates, for me, is very personal - I grew up in Orlando, and I went on the ride the movie is based on a million times. I first found out about the movie while seeing another movie with my sister. They had a preview for it, and all the preview said was "Johnny Deep... Orlando Bloom... Jeffrey Rusch... Pirates of the Caribbean." That was it - no images or anything. My sister and I looked at one another in delight and admitted that we really didn't need to know anything else, that was enough for us. Even if it was just Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom popping in and out at various points in the ride. I remember seeing that preview, but I don't even remember what movie I was seeing at the time. :) So I was predisposed to really enjoy it, and the first movie didn't disappoint (I've seen it many times - I even like to listen to the director's comments when it is on, because then I focus on what Johnny Depp is doing, and he's hysterical). I didn't care for the second one, and only saw it once. The third one I really liked, and will no doubt see it again. I would say, if you didn't like the first two, don't see the third one, it really isn't any different.

I really like the series. Though 2nd movie was bit of disappointment for me. I think this one was probably the best of them all. I think it's a very enjoyable movie and It gave me a good laugh as well. I really love Depp as Jack Saprrow and it's awesome that Chow Yung Fat is in it too! :) I voted for the last question as if you didn't like the last two. I'm not sure if you would enjoy this if you didn't like the first two. If you do end up seeing this I really hope you'll enjoy it!!

*hugs* I know I'm very behind on your posts and not sure if i could catch up this weekend due to finals. I want to personally say sorry and I hope to get to them soon!
