Infernal Affairs
"Infernal Affairs" is the film I watched more then once and still want to watch again. I am very happy about the fact that the recent remake, "The Departed", was made skillfully by Martin Scorsese and is proven to be extremely successful all over the world. I am so glad about the fact that ideas and influence don't seem to go only in the direction from West to East anymore. If anything, especially as concerning Hollywood, the recent direction of ideas seems to be from East to West.
"Infernal Affairs" is a sleek, clever and stylish police story. But is it simply that? Like all of the best films or other works of fiction, "Infernal Affairs" goes onto the much deeper level.
Freedom. What is freedom? Where does it lie? Is it a set of circumstances around us or is it something we grow and carry inside? Both of the main characters are living their life undercover in a situation where every day they must think about every word and every action. They both are figuratively speaking "in prison". But one of them, Chan Wing Yan , believes in the work he is doing. Though his undercover live is costing him a lot psychologically, he is free. It is different for another one, Lau Kin Ming. The one thing he desires the most is to be a different person, to swap his place with someone else. His spirit is trapped inside and wants out.
The skies (blue, cloudy, deep) is one of the recurring visual images in the film, adding a dimension to the main protagonist's search for freedom. In the scenes with Chan Wing Yan the camera often points upwards, giving a feel of freedom. But in the scenes with Lau Kin Ming the camera often points downwards, or he skies are obstructed with the buildings.
Masks This is something I keep thinking about - I know we all wear masks and we probably can't survive without them. But do the masks we wear influence us? I think they do. We start pretending to be someone, but by pretending we change something inside ourselves. Hmm. It could be of course a good thing, a way to improve ourselves, but could be so dangerous too.
I have made some icons from "Infernal Affairs", i wanted to make them for ages and made screencaps about five weeks ago. I have to keep fingers crossed now that the Chinese characters are correct. ** fingers crossed **

Date: 2006-11-29 01:12 am (UTC)Hope you don't mind, but about the Chinese characters, #9 of IA, 自由 is liberty/freedom, 由 on its own means from/cause.
With #16 of ITMFL, 果 means fruit, is that what you meant or did you mean eg 结果 which means result.

Oh, no I appreciate this very very much. I had a little feeling that something could be wrong. I apologise, I have fixed the ones you have mentioned. #7 and #8 of "Infernal Affairs" say "destiny", right?
#16 of ITMFL was supposed to say "if only", and I guess this was VERY FAR OFF. Sorry.

From:corrected for spelling mistake
Date: 2006-11-29 03:39 am (UTC)I can't pick favorite icons yet, I like so many! Very nice work, Alexandra.
I just ordered In The Mood for Love on DVD, I'll give it to myself for Christmas/NY. It's definitely a film I would like to watch many times over.

This is a very good description of the characters. And what you said about camera angles is so true. I noticed it as well, but was afraid I was misinterpreting things.

I had a nice surprise with "In the Mood for Love" few month ago - I received my copy for free with the weekend edition of "Times". Good things do happen sometimes. :D
And what you said about camera angles is so true. I noticed it as well, but was afraid I was misinterpreting things.
And I am so glad you have noticed this too - I was a little afraid that I am just having a "wishful thinking". "Infernal Affairs" IS AWESOME!

Date: 2006-11-29 09:50 am (UTC)Often masks influence our life, but the question is if we must wear them, or if we choose to do it to make the others accept them. I haven't found the answer, until now.
