I went to see “ Night Watch” the other day. There is a big hype in Russia surrounding this film, apparently it was the absolute leader in the Russian box office ahead of “Lord of the Rings” and collected the record amount of 15.5 million dollars (which is indeed quite big due to the fact that Russian currency exchange rate is something like 30 rubles to 1 dollar, though I could be wrong about estimation).

So again I had mixed feelings about all the hype, but nonetheless went to see it. I can not say I liked it entirely, but it was definitely worthy watching.

I thought that story was deep; although it started like something from LOTR it definitely had originality in a way it was developed later:

Some people have supernatural gifts; they are called “The Others”. Long time ago there was a war between Light and Darkness, and THE Truce was made. The conditions of the truce are as follows: There should be a balance between light and darkness. All Others are free to choose the dark side or the light side. The light side has the forces of “Night Watch” and the dark side has the forces of the “Day Watch”.

What I liked the best is that light vs. darkness issue in the film is not so black-and-white. And everything is very realistic – none of the silly “demon” masks or any of the things I don’t particular like; but in some realistic way the vampires and such felt like vampires.

I found the main character, Anton Gorodetsky and the actor who is playing him, Konstantin Khabensky quite enigmatic. Altogether it was a good week – two new very likable male actors - Nathan Fillion and Konstantin Khabensky, really good week!!!!!!!!
I have made two icon-sized images of Konstantin:

1. 2.

What I really didn’t like at all was the way images in the film were always flicking and flashing. There were some good special effects too, but all the flashing gave me a bit of a headache. It was hard to watch.

The concept sounds interesting, and most importantly it's good to hear it's not black and white.

I'll definitely try to check it out when it's released in the US.

Hmm, I really dislike flashing, it makes my eyes hurt.

It spoiled the whole thing for me, there is A LOT of flashing in the "Night watch", almost like if they didn’t have money to make good special effects all the way through and decided to cover it with flashing…

There is a “Night watch 2 and 3” in making, I don’t particary like sequences , apart if it is like in the case of LOTR an intrinsic part of a whole .
