Swallow the sun: episodes 1-4

Wow! Honestly, I haven't expected this drama to be so good. For various reasons and some of them quite objective, like the fact that the subtitles for the drama weren't released until months after the broadcast, no-one I know (apart from
dangermousie) has seen it . But the drama is very very good so far, and if it keeps this way I might transform into an insane recommender of this to anyone and everyone.
What is good? First of all, the drama has plenty of plot. I am not even sure where it is all going, let alone how it ends, and usually I can predict the ending for any Korean drama with high accuracy after the episode 4. But I am intrigued!
Then the drama has characters: so far we have a poor boy (illegitimate child, abandoned in an orphanage), a sweet girl (rich parents died in an accident that might have been a murder), a sociopath chairman who seems to have taken over the land that used to belong to girl's parents (and who wants to take over the rest of Jeju island by any means possible, including murder and blackmail) ,and the chairman's spoiled son.
Also the drama has a beautiful location. If this house is a prop, I applaud the designer. If this is a real house, I want to know where it is. Usually Korean non-period drama houses are rather strange, even the houses of people who are supposed to be affluent. I quite often tend to think : "Why Korean rich live in these horrible interiors? They have no money for anything better?" This is either due to the lack of funds or taste differences.

But Jang Min Ho's house is an absolutely gorgeous place, and at the same time it gives you an eerie feel of displacement . The place looks too empty and strangely cold, and it does not seem to belong in this time, this place, this country.
And the actors are all very good:
Ji sung (as Kim Jung Woo, the orphan boy) : I have never been a big fan of this baby-face actor, may be because I have never found much depth in his other characters. It is always nice to be wrong on the "good" side: there is plenty of depth, vulnerability and against-all-odds strength in the way he plays Kim Jung Woo.
Sung Yu Ri (as Lee Soo Hyun, the girl whose parents were killed) : She was one of the reasons it took me so long to even try to watch this drama. Her role of "stupid girl" in "Hong Gil Dong" rubbed me the wrong way, and to tell the truth, the worst way of all wrong ways. But again, it is so nice to be nicely surprised: her portrayal of Lee Soo Hyun is lovely.
Lee Wan (as Jang Tae Hyuk, spoilt rich boy) : no-one plays dark and tortured as good as Lee Wan does.
Jun Kwang Ryul (as Jang Min Ho, evil chairman): I have seen this actor playing complex (on the evil side) middle-aged characters in so many dramas recently that they all merged a little in my mind. But Jang Min Ho stands out from the rest (it must be the evil moustache :D).

PS: I am trying to stay unspoiled accidentally spoiled myself for an important piece of information, ten minutes ago. Noooooooo!

Date: 2011-03-31 02:20 pm (UTC)BTW, I commented on ep 4 somewhere on your lj. I'm fairly sure where you commented for ep 3. Anyhow, I love this drama, too.
The characters are so great, all of them, even the secondary. Take Jung-woo's gang. They're secondary and we don't know much about their backstory aside from the fact that they grew up with him and each one of the them watch the others' back, but I get a warm feeling when I see them.
Also? Manager Baek, the evil chairman's right hand man. I've always seen that actor play good characters and seeing him play one that is more on the dark side creeps me up. Also? His character is sleazy and he gives off weird vibes. I keep thinking that he's the real evil mastermind behind a lot of crimes. Like, yes, he's staying by the chairman's side, but it's more to take advance of him than anything and maybe he even manipulates him some? Not that the chairman is a helpless kitten, mind you...
Noes! Jung-woo get a new haircut? nooooooooooooooo!
Re: the house. May I be honest? When I saw it, I loled. It looked soooo out of place and so...pristine? Over the top? It looked exactly like a prop... so much so that I squinted at my screen and tried to figure out if it was a real house or, IDK, a house model, the kind architectures sometimes build to show clients? IDK, it felt too manga-like, not a real house at all.

Date: 2011-03-31 02:28 pm (UTC)I have seen the comment!!! Will get to it as soon as I can!
yes, all the secondaries are great, which is typical of this writer's dramas. He seems to pay attention to detail and he is never lazy in fleshing out the secondaries.
Manager Baek creeps the living lights out of me I think he and the chairman are two pees in a pod, though, they seem to understand each other perfectly.
the house: heee! this is exactly what I mean!!!!

Date: 2011-03-31 02:34 pm (UTC)Hee, okay.
IKR. I like this kind of writing. I'm a tad worried where the drama will go because he's building so many storylines and I'm afraid way too many will get tangled together and that may turn into a makjang-ish mess.

Date: 2011-04-01 10:32 am (UTC)I think usually the writer manages to keep the track of everyone, but general OTT is often present (but not to weepy makgang extreme).

Date: 2011-03-31 11:02 pm (UTC)That's OK because I could not help myself either. I had one glued on JW and another one on Jackson.
I loved STS because I got hooked on Ji Sung when I started watching Kim Soo Ro (which by the way, it had Jackson again) last year and i watched all of his dramas including this one. I liked it alot. don't worry, not going to spoil you.
I too have issues with Song Yuri from her acting in HGD and I can't stand her in any drama. she was less annoying this time though. enjoy the rest of the drama

Date: 2011-04-01 10:30 am (UTC)have you finished watching Kim Soo Ro, BTW? ** cough cough ** Do you mind spoiling me for the ending? Who ended up with whom ( I liked the other brother there as well, you see :D)

Date: 2011-04-05 08:41 am (UTC)me too. hated Jackson (sorry don't know his real name) in Kim Soo Ro and to be honest, i was really disappointed with the whole drama.
they ruined the story for me by introducing Ah Hyo as his first love and him taking too long to fall in love with his wife to be Hwang Ok. not sure which character out of these two you liked but me totally did not like AH and thought her character was just a story filler. hehehe maybe i am a bit biased towards HO.
at the end, he does fall in love with HO.
