Usually, I am a canon OTP kind of girl. I don't know why but normally I choose the canon OTP in any show or any book instinctively, without meaning to do so. There have been few exceptions, as with any rule, but usually these exceptions are in two categories: a) the writer of the story have changed their mind half-way . Little Women is My most upsetting case of non-canon OTP; or b) For some reason my subjective aesthetic feelings kick in and I find the canon guy extremely ugly . Vampire Diaries! Stefan is well and truly ugly which can't be made better by any goodness of his character - these are two totally different things.

And just when I say that I am fed up with Kdramas, Kdrama fairy wants to take revenge and consequently I become heavily and rapidly obsessed with Kdrama Midas. And even worse, I become obsessed with non-canon OTP.

Come and meet my favourite non-canon OTP: Lee Jung Yeon ( Lee Min Jung ) and Yoo Myung Joon ( No Min Woo ):

To preface, let me explain more about "Midas". Midas, so far, is a strange beast. I start watching this expecting a mind-bending story about "mergers and acquisitions between companies", with Jang Hyuk. But in reality, this sentence doesn't describe Midas correctly: this might end as a melodrama, but so far it is a human drama about people who care for money more than anything else, and about their "closest and dearest". It revolves around the following love triangle: Kim Do Hyun (played by Jang Hyuk , gorgeous and sporting various haircuts) , his ex-fiancee Lee Jung Yeon and MONEY in the form of Do Hyun's lady boss In Hye. Among the various other elements thrown in the mix are: revenge and family drama.

The best thing about the drama so far (I have watched 6 episodes) is Lee Jung Yeon's character. Even when they had their blissful period with Do Hyun she said the following to her father: "My life is not just about Do Hyun". She is warm , she is intelligent, she is capable and she is her own person. She works as a nurse but she also studies in grad school and wants to become "a professor". She immediately picks up on the way Do Hyun starts to change after beginning to work for In Hye. At first, Jung Yeon is ready to forgive, but one thing happens after another: Do Hyun never has any time for her, then their wedding is blown because he gets in an accident which might have and might have not being arranged by someone (In Hye, i suspect), but the truth is, he was talking about work on his mobile whilst driving. Other misunderstandings arise, mostly engineered by In Hye, but it all ends when Do Hyun goes to New York and Jung Yeon and Do Hyun split. There were three particular scary things so far: In Hye calling Do Hyun "her prize horse", Do Hyun always insisting Jung Yeon should leave her work and Do Hyun hiring gangsters to beat up some people protesting on the street.

I have been shipping Do Hyun and Jung Yeon at first, but after the episode 6 I decided that they don't really suit each other. The failed wedding was sadly the best thing that happened to Jung Yeon, otherwise Do Hyun might have ended up hurting her even more.

Back to my non-canon OTP:

She: Lee Jung Yeon , a capable nurse
He: Yoo Myung Joon , a playboy brother of In Hye. There was a tragic story in their childhood: the two of them are children of the second wife (out of 4 wives with 6 kids overall) ,poorly accepted in the family. Their mother has left the family for some lover 16 years younger than her.

The best scene so far was the moment when he fell for her. Up to that, it was all fun and games for Myung Joon. But then one day he crossed the line and had the biggest telling-off of his life from Lee Jung Yeon. This changed everything:

Myung Joon works for the VIP suite in the hospital. One day she stumbles upon the following :

I like how shocked Jung Yeon is: I would have been shocked too, the boy has a nasty character but he is pretty:

As usual, Myung Joon pushes and pushes and prods and prods:

Jung Yeon is not bothered to react at first. She has too much on her plate at the moment, her wedding has just been canceled.

Then Myung Joon says something inappropriate about her wedding

And here she tells him all: "Do I look like your doormat? Just because I have less money than you? My wedding was just canceled and this was the saddest moment of my life! Who are you to poke your fingers at it? You talk to me once more and I will complain to the hospital authorities!"

You could actually see his facial expression changing as she was getting under his skin:

At the end she told him that he should check his psychiatric health (whist he is at the hospital for a check-up) , because clearly he does not know how to read human emotions which is not normal at his age! HA!

This is the face of the man in love:

PS: We had a time-jump in the episode 6 and I think he is about to become ill with cancer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS 2: This is a grown-up drama, with open-mouthed kissing prior to wedding and assumption that people actually have sex.

So...Midas is actually pretty good then? Or is it just the uncanon ship?
And she's gonna go back to Do Hyun? I don't even watch this and I already hate that idea!!

It is actually pretty good. .It is hard to tell with 100% accuracy, but so far it is reminding me of "Slingshot" and this is always a good thing.

And she's gonna go back to Do Hyun? I don't even watch this and I already hate that idea!!

I don't think so. Again, it is hard to say where it all is going. Both she and Do Hyun are still hung up on each other. but the way he is now - there is no way she is returning back to him. He just ordered some gangsters to beat up her father (who was among the protesters)! And this man was like a father to him!!

The bad things are:

Lee Jung Yeon is a SECONDARY girl and never trust a Kdrama with secondary girls. but we will see. The rules are there to be broken!

I ship a non-canon ship! This never going to end well too.

I LOVED Slingshot! How do you find them simmilar though?

What an ass.

Secondary girls have been getting better lately so maybe she'll be okay. I just hope that Myung Joon survives through the show.

In a way that it is about stock manipulations, but (so far) in an undertsndable, interesting and not-overbearing way. Like in Slingshot, the main focus is human relationships within a business family (ann ugly truth of it), not the actual "mergers and acquisitions". It is like "Baker King" is not really about BAKING and Pasta is not really about cooking.

** finger crossed **

I was interested in this because I adore Lee Min-Jung after Smile, You, but the whole acquisitions and mergers thing sounded like it might put me to sleep.

There is not as much of it as the usual blurbs seem to imply. It is definitely worthy to try , unless your tolerance to anything of the following kind is zero: the business lady (female lead) stages a "coop" against her older brother using some elaborate stock manipulations.

I liked it. I ADORED the main couple, and even the secondary couple was pretty sweet. But the main OTP was just fantastic. It's difficult for me to rec it though, because it is so freaking long and everything to do with the parents is unbelievably obnoxious. But having 45 episodes to build the main OTP's relationship was kind of a beautiful thing to watch.

Thank you! I love Lee Min Jung in Midas, I never expected her to be so good, the previous thing I have sen her in was BOF.

everything to do with the parents is unbelievably obnoxious.

This is what fast forward button is for .:D

I un-canon-ship a few times, too. It's sometimes no fun. :)

I'm not likely to check out "Midas" since I just don't have a feel for the premise. But I'm just wondering since you say it's un-canon, are you saying that they're really not likely to end up together?

I think he is going to die (from cancer :D). Will they or will they not be together before that? My bet is they will in some way, but it will a "tortured" kind of a relationship. She is hung up on another guy , she wants to take revenge on this other guy (he hired thugs to beat her father) and probably she will hook up with the "playboy" for the purposes of revenge. I am goin to love it and eat it with a spoon, but it all going to end in tears. :D

I've seen so many different thoughts about Midas that it's a bit hard to make head or tails if it's good or not. Some love it, others think it's mildly interesting, some think it's boring and yet others think it's not worth writing home about....

I wasn't initially interested at all, even with that cast but I might now give it a try. At some point when I'm finally done with couple of other dramas I'm trying to finish. :)

I LOVED Slingshot (which also had uncannon pairings, sort of) so if Midas is anywhere near it in 'temperament' I may actually like it.

I think Midas is objectively a well-written drama so far, but you never know with these things, in fact it is so well written that I am slightly afraid if it can keep up like this. but someone whose preferences are Romantic Comedies (for example), or teen shows are not likely to like this IMHO. It is complex, it is dark (but subtly so, not in-your-face), it is not centred around boy-meets-girl scenario.

I would say it has a good chance to appeal to you, though - the elements you like are all there, but it is hard to judge if it will be love or like for you

It reminds me of Slingshot in a big way, but it is not 100% like it as well. Midas is in a class of it's own. :D

Just checked- the writer for this is the same guy who did scripts for several good things : "IRIS", "The Kingdom of The Winds", "Lobbyist", "All in" and " The Book of Three Han".

Going by the other dramas I've watched, the writer likes to torture the male leads so he may not die in the end but probably wishes he had, ha.
