I am fully back with "Supernatural" love because the season 5 was quite good. Both my daughter and I watched it with interest (and isn't it great to have someone to watch things with me - we seem to have similar tastes!!!) . To be honest, the ending of the season was quite week and very anti-climatic, but there were plenty of good episodes in the season. The best episodes for me were the ones with the Four Horsemen, and the episode 5.21, the one with Death, Pale Rider, is most definitely one of the strongest episodes of the entire series.

Death gives Dean his ring, he is not keen on Lucifer and wants him back in the cage.

This episode included one of my most favourite blue grass songs, "O Death", in a fantastic interpretation:

1. This is the actual scene that used the song (episode 5.21) from Youtube, for some reason unembeddable: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1EzU9sLQ6I&feature=related

2. "Oh Death" sang by Jen Titus:

3. "Oh Death" sand by Ralph Stanley, which won him a 2002 Grammy Award in the category of Best Male Country Vocal Performance. He was 82 back then.

My daughter and I watch Supernatural, too! I'm all caught up but she's only seen through season 4. We are need to watch the season before season 6.

Thanks for the link for the O Death scene (so chilling!). I can't believe I didn't realize that's the Ralph Stanley song! Have you seen O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Sounds fantastic! We breathed though both seasons 4 and 5 in no time (and this was after we watched "Vampire Diaries" )

I love "Oh Brother", and the soundtrack for this film has long been one of our family favourite CDs . I was really happy to hear "Oh Death: again!

Is Vampire Diaries good for an almost 9 year old? Z loves all things vampire/supernatural.

It depends on what you think is best - it is much tamer than "Supernatural" and has much less swearing (I think :D), but it has numerous scenes of kissing and implied sex scenes (nothing shown, but you know.. ). But it appears that for my daughter (who is 11) sex process was explained at school completely (with videos :D) , so I don't worry too much.

OMG, love the version by Jen Titus, I think I have to look into her songs, because she has a fantastic voice.

The funny thing is, this scene from SPN makes me want to continue watching it. *gg* Hmhm, I have to think about it.

There were many good eps in the season 5. :D I didn't care for the season 4 as much, though - which season did you stop watching on?

I stopped after season 2.

Hmm. This is a hard one. I think that the season 3 was not too bad (if not for all the confusion that was caused by half-heatedly introducing female characters). The season 4 is my least favourite - I was really annoyed numerous times by stupidity.

I never liked how female characters were written, so Jo and Elle were a big suprise and a reason why I thought I'll give the series another chance. But well...same procedure as with every other female character, they just vanished, it made me angry enough to only finish the season and never look back.
But maybe I'll watch season 5, since I heard both Jo and Elle will be there for a couple of episodes and since I heard so many good things about this season in particular. Is it possible to just skip 3 and 4 and go directly to season 5?

The way Supernatural deals with females is truly not very good.

I think you can jump ahead. I can spoil you on the main things you need to know before season 5, but in a way it is all spoiled in the trailer - THE END OF THE WORLD.

Yes, the ladies make an appearance. And Dean's son and his mother too.

Would be great if you could tell me the main things I need to know. :)
I know about Castiel, but that's it.
Is the trailer 4 minutes and some seconds long? Because this one got removed from YT.

I am so sorry, I am late with this.

In short:

1. After Sam was mortally wounded, Dean sold his soul to a deamon at the crossroads.

2. For a year they tried to find a way for Dean not to go to Hell, but couldn't .

3. Dean went to Hell

4. Castiel-the-Angel pulled Dean out of Hell, only angels can do this.

5. Because Dean is a key figure in a war between angels and demons. He is a "vessel" for Archangel Michael and Sam is a "vessel" for Lucifer.

6. Lucifer was trying to get out of the pit. For this, demons had to break 66 seals.

7. The last an the biggest seal was an old deamon named Lily. Everyone thought Lily had to be killed to stop the last seal from breaking.

8. Whilst Dean was in Hell, Sam was tricked by a deamon called Ruby. In order to become strong and kill Lily (so that Lucifer can't get out), Sam started drinking demon blood. But Ruby lied to him, and when Sam killed Lily at the end of the season 4, it was revealed that Lily was the last seal , but she had to be kept alive!

9. So, at the end of the season 4 Lucifer got out and the Apocalypse started. Angels against demons. Lucifer is mad , he hates humans. But some angels hate humas too, and like the idea of Apocalypse and getting rid of humans. God is nowhere to be seen, he gave eveyone "free will" thing, I think.

intermezzo: (SPN - Dean - promo shot)
From: [personal profile] intermezzo
Yeah, I thought the same about the ending of s5, but I guess, considering SPN was supposed to have only 5 seasons and since Kripke & co kept telling the fans that their 5 years storyline arc was going to end by the end of s5, I think that ending was understandable. They may have tweaked the last scene in order to leave an opening for s6, which iirc, is supposed to be more like s1, more about monsters and hunting than angels and demons, which is fine by me. I keep telling myself that if SPN hadn't been renewed, they might have killed Sam off and let Dean have his semi-happy ending. I might have been happier if s5 had ended with a cliffhanger, with Sam in Hell and Dean with his new family. It seems so...anticlimatic that Sam was back. With new powers? How did he escape? Gah!

You must be happy because it was mostly due to your constatnt recs that I have started watching SPN again. :D

yes, i thought that it all would have been much better if it all finished at the end of the season 5 (as was planned).

but also, i thought the whole last episode was largely unimpressive , even the hole that Sam fell into was on the ridiculous side,. Plus the chain of the final events was totally predictable and I waited for something else to happen. But still, overall the season 5 is probably my favourite season of SPN.

From: [personal profile] intermezzo
OMG I did that? True, when I like something, I tend to gush about it, but I recced it constantly? OMG I don't remember. LOL

We'll see about that when s6 starts. I liked s1, mostly because it was all about Sam and Dean and their travels. Don't get me wrong, I loved Cas and the angels/demons storyarc wasn't uninsteresting, but somewhere along the way the relationship between the brothers took a sappy turn? IDEK what I'm saying.

yeah, word. Same thing happened with Gabriel. I was like, what? what? Is that it? I was waiting for a big smackdown between angels and demons and Sam and Dean and all that...fizzled out like that. Meep!

I am the ssame - I can do with some real family dynamics (please take away sentimentality , someone! Please! ) . I like single episode idea as well, seasons 1 and 2 were so easy to watch!

I had never heard the song before I saw that ep of Supernatural, but I immediately went out and found a copy of Jen Titus' version. LOVE it.
