Pick the stars: the end

EEEEEEEE! I have been really really good this week, finishing my unfinished dramas as if there is no tomorrow! "Pick the Stars" was a very typical Korean family drama; it was as far from any reality as you can get, packed to the brim with clichés, stereotypes and family love, but did it all well and made you feel better about the world. Can you find anywhere in the world a rather low intelligence lazy girl who would turn into a shrewd hard-worker the minute her parents die (simultaneously, under the wheels of a lorry sent by evil relatives)? No, I don't think so. But at the same time – isn't it nice to see this transformation happening (overnight)? And isn't it nice to watch the bundle of evil secondary girls, lost grandchildren, awful mothers, transplants of something I didn't even know existed in human body and all such things, whist having a cup of tea and a cake?

Needless to say, I enjoyed "Pick the Stars". I just wish the number of Pal Kang's brothers and sisters was a little smaller as five was way too much and that we also had kissing scenes sooner; leaving the kissing until the end of the episode 19 was not at all acceptable. But the ending is ridiculously good and satisfying to the extreme.

Now I can watch "Cinderella's sister". :D

Hee! I, too, liked it, clichés and all. :)

I didn't find the number of kids too high. I LOVED Pa-rang like I've never loved an onscreen fictional kid character before (trufax!). He's just too awesome. And I also liked how the girls were rooting (and obviously were crushing!) on the other guys: so adorable.

Her transformation was nice to see; I liked it just as much as Kang Ha's (favorite character, of course! KJH FTW! I watched why did you come to our house?, which was kind of painful to do since it had a trillion clichés, just because of him and his acting. His soulful eyes, omg1 *dreamy sigh* No wonder I loved Kang Ha but I digress).

My only pet peeve? Jae Young. OMG I wanted to strangle her. I'm sure this was the effect she was supposed to have on me, but still, delusional much? insane much? alkdjalsj And of course there was a sudden change. I didn't mind such a change in Pal-Gang cos we get to see how she struggled through it all, but it felt like Jae Young woke up one day and suddenly saw the light. WTH? Sometimes I'd like my villains to remain villains, if you know what I mean. Why do they all have to be good or less evil in the end? Jae Young personality change (is she schizophrenic?) felt like a forced one and wayyy too odd. Then only redeeming bit is that she and Joon Ha can finally be friends, but that's about it.

AND PICS! OMG! *fans self*

I loved Pa Rang too, and he is one of my fave on-screen kids too. But I think the whole number of children could have been cut down to 3: 1.Parang, 2.Baby (for the purposes of making the herouine's life really hard and also for transplant angst) 3. One girl (to crush on different people left right and centre).

His soulful eyes, omg1 *dreamy sigh*

** Sighs right next to you ** HE did the scenes of ANGST and DESPAIR really really well. :D

I kind of loved her insane self because - I like to hate secondary guys/girls from time to time, and I saw her transformation to goodness coming (because - family drama! Everyone must end up good and preferably hooked-up with a partner), but I am with you - her transformation was one of these totally roll-eye worthy unbelievable things.

Why do they all have to be good or less evil in the end?

I think it is the family drama thing - everyone must end up as a good person and repent at the end of the drama. I don't mind it too much.

He does that soooo well. He does most of his acting with his eyes, imho, and I love that. It's the kind of acting Bae Soo-bin does, too, and I love both to bits. *g*

Yeah, maybe, but sometimes I just want to see the villains getting punished for what they did. It only ever happens in revenge dramas, but even then it's not always the case.

Excuse me now, I have to go watch and fangirl my Bae Soo-bin in Dong-yi. :)

Hee! Now I have finished "cinderella's sister" I am going to do the same. :D

Yay, so glad you liked! I thought the ending of them living in sin in that teeny littl house and an extra kid was adorable.

I don't like them both giving up their money though. Booo! Am materialistic :)

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2010-04-02 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Money is an evil evil thing in Korean family dramas. But really, I am sure this all will get sorted somehow.

I enjoyed this quite a bit, it was quite similar to the tone of "Family Honour" (the same writer, I think) , great stuff.

[identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com 2010-04-02 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup, it was the same writer.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2010-04-02 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
He is on my "Will watch anything by him" list now. He makes me feel good about the world.

[identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com 2010-04-02 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, mine too. It's basically him, Hong Sisters, Noh Yee Kyung (Worlds Within, Goodbye Solo), Lee Kyung Hee (ALTK, Christmas, Thank You), Choi Wan Kyu and his guys (All In, IRIS, Jumong, Swallow the Sun) and Kim Kyu Wan (Cinderella Unni, Robbers, Piano, Spring Day).

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2010-04-02 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
My list is similar, with the exception of Choi Wan Kyu and Noh Yee Kyung (I d-led "Words Within" though, I am going to make a second attempt.

I am watching "Cinderella's Sister" - this is love. Love Hong Ki Hoon. It is actually an interesting drama - the way the titles are printed, it should be like "Chuno", with both girls being important /lead characters. And it may well be the Cinderella who will get Hong Ki Hoon at the end.

Re: CS. So glad.

I love Ki Hoon too! I am wondering about his background like mad though. have you gotten to his brothers yet? I want to drown them in acid.

I would be incredibly shocked if Cinderella gets Ki Hoon - I don't know how far in you are, but by the end of ep 2, I thought that whether Ki Hoon and MGY end up together, there is no way he'd go for Cinderella. He treats her as a sweet, loveable younger sister. There is an instant connection with MGY though and it's sort of like they are in their own little world. But we'll see. I am pretty sure there will be a time-jump shortly to finally introduce us to male second lead so who knows how the patterns will go.

Re: WW. Hope you like. *anxious* Re: CWK. He makes the best action/spy/thriller kdramas out there - I know it's a genre that's sort of divisive but (in addition to actually liking his dramas) I give him huge points for doing competent job at his niche - if you want to see how bad an action kdrama can get (much much worse than a bad melodrama can get :P) check out A Man Called God. *shudder*

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2010-04-02 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
EEEE Just finished the ep.2 . Gosh Ki Hoo is so good but I like Eun Jo - I think they at the worst she will be an anti-herouine, but most likely she'll turn out to be good. Cinderella annoys me though. I must watch "Tamra" asap, otherwise I might get prejudiced against the actress.

And yes, the chemistry between Ki Hoo/Eun Jo is CRAZY. The second lead might be the one for Cinderella then. The titles look a bit like in "Women of the sun" where the girls were the main parts and each got her separate guy (with a bit of confusion in the middle).

I checked "A Man called God", it is so bad it is good. I might get tempted to watch the whole thing when the subs are out.

I like EJ as a character and she's definitely a protagonist. Maybe an anti-hero, like Dae Gil? Some of the contradictory synopses talk about vengeance (though whether by Cinderella on EJ or vice versa is unclear). Hmmm.

I am so glad you see it too! It really is some of the best I've seen in a while - they don't even say anything or touch but it's scorching. I also really like the way they interact because he's been where she is right now. (I want more on his background!).

I actually find every single character so far interesting.

Second male lead is supposed to be in love with MGY but who knows how it will turn out.

I actually like Cinderella for a very subjective reason that I think I would be like her - chatty and cheerful. She is really ncie if you think about it - many a teen would have sulked about a new sibling, especially such a grumpy one.

Re: Tamra. She starts silly in the beginning but gets awesome as the drama progresses.

may be both? It seems as if EJ's mum is definitely preferring Cinderella (hate you evil woman) – this could be a reason for EJ's vengeance. But I am sure that everyone is going to end crying on each other's shoulders, and I am not getting "people going to die" vibe as well. Also from the previous dramas of this scriptwriter – people don't die easily, even with terminal diseases.

It is almost as if I feel I am intruding when I watch them together. Gosh, this is so not going to end well.

Me too.

She is nice, but it comes across as if she has this idea of "I must be nice", and is not 100% nice in her heart.

Indeedy. Did you say Song Il Gook
Is a wife-beater? Serves him right. :D

Huh? No, he isn't - at least not to anyone's knowledge - I've never heard anything of the sort even as a rumor. Actually, I bet if he tried his wife would murder him - she's a judge and any woman that gets that high up in such a patriarchal society must be made of steel.

It is almost as if I feel I am intruding when I watch them together. Gosh, this is so not going to end well.

I have hope! All of this writer's previous OTPs ended well. I hope so - I think they can work wonderfully together once she allows herself to open up a bit. Because let's face it, your average guy won't want to be with someone as prickly as she.

Oh, I think he has taken to her as duck to water. It is the fact that in previous life he must have had "they just like me for my money" problem and plus to it, of course, he just sees himself in her. They also had that initial moment "OMPH! She is so pretty!" when he chased her in the episode 1.

I have shamelessly re-watched this, noticing more things. The hairpin buying = OMPH. So hot. But Cinderella annoys me to no end – she is too silly to live and makes everyone's life more difficult with her silliness. Plus I really dislike the type of over-exaggerated expressions the actress is doing. And her voice is so baby-ish. Oh, I hope she improves on me.

Edit:

Huh? No, he isn't - at least not to anyone's knowledge

I must have mixed him with someone. My apologies!

The hairpin buying was lovely and so was he chase. I also loved him sitting in the wine cellar after his family meeting and thinking of EJ.

I like Cinderella but I actually like that type of character (as long as she is not the heroine). She reminds me a little of Minam actually. Let's hope she grows up though.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2010-04-03 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought Cinderella is a bit like Mi Nam too, only this is a different type of drama (or may be just the timing) and Mi Nam didn't get anyone smacked on their faces because of her silly antics.

I think also for me personally - I find Park Shin Hye to be very cute (and I find her face-making cute) but I find Seo Woo's face to be on odd side (did she have a surgery? does she cry a lot to make her eyes swollen?) . I am so sorry - I think on purely visceral level the actress is not agreeing with me so far. It might get better, though, I was the same with Chae Rim in "Dal Ja's Spring" but after "Powerful opponents" - I started liking her.

But as you say, she is not the protagonist so this is not a problem.

I also loved him sitting in the wine cellar after his family meeting and thinking of EJ.

Yes! And he said "I've got you!" as if she is something of his personal, belonging only to him, stuff.

Yeah, but that smack made sense - it's not unreasonable of Hyo Sun to want to find out what is going on - Stepmom said EJ is abused in school and EJ said she isn't. HS should have been more nuanced, EJ was way out of line shoving her and Stepmother was out of line slapping. They are all wrong but stepmother the most - HS and EJ are kids and stepmother is an adult - and she only did it with calculation - to make her new husband happy. Oh, poor EJ! I loved the look on Ki Hoon's face during that scene because he totally understood her.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2010-04-04 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It was totally silly of Hyo Sun to get drunk and act like that at school! Going to school drunk = totally spoiled or incredibly stupid. Or both. The shove wasn't as big as to make anyone fall, unless they were drunk. I am not justifying EJ's actions here, but she didn't want her to fall, I am sure. She is not THAT stupid, she knew what was going to happen.

Umm, why hello there. Yum. lol.

I made the mistake of watching Great Inheritance after seeing PtS not realizing that KJH was in it and playing the villain. Oh my was he ever a douche in that. But those pictures help to erase the bad memories. ;)

OH! I don't even remember him there - but I kept having a feeling through PtS that I have seen KJH somewhere. Thank you!
