This is a total mash and ramble, but I can't contain it all:
The episode 24 was PERFECT. Perfect. Everything was tied up and explained, even the Little Prince's future destiny: we get to see Prince Bongrim saying to his father that he will re-instate the Little Prince as Royal as soon as he ascends to the Throne (which is going to be very soon).
The love triangle was also un-tied quite perfectly: we get to see sweet sweet love moments between Un Nyun and Tae Ha and we get to see how Dae Gil makes it easier for her to move on by still refusing to admit that he followed her for 10 years out of love. This is one of my favourite things in fiction, when a hero sacrifices his feelings. I LOVE U DAE GIL.
The two guys were fantastic and both actors did a great job.
Dae Gil: In the few last episodes we really get a bit of insight into DG's character. Sadly, he is irreparably damaged. The only bright spot in his life and the only thing he is living for is Un Nyun. I find it hard to talk too much about his character because I find it so saaaaad – he is fantastic, capable in many many different ways individual with sharp tongue and HUGE HEART but his soul is all burned out. There is no happy future life for him and the changes are not possible. If TH would have died at the end of the drama – the way DG character is written, there wouldn't have been any happy ending for him and UN. ** weeps **
Tae Ha: His character grows dramatically throughout the series. He starts as a proud Military General, wishing nothing but passionate life and noble death. Even when he is made a slave he hangs to his Pride and his beliefs.
What I like the most about his character arc is that his pride is cut to pieces and thrown out the window – a person who at the beginning thought that he is somehow better than other slaves transforms into a person who is ready to admit to his wife's old lover that "I've learned a lot from you" and takes advices from a bandit leader that "you should not speak down to other people".
There is also another layer – the whole "noble death" business (a part of the Pride issue) . My good guess is that old TH wanted nothing more than die with honour protecting everyone at the end, but this wasn't his choice to make – other people's (his wife's and the Prince's) survival depended on his survival , so he had to leave the glory of the Big Noble Death to other people.
And the third layer is his inherent goodness, trust in other people and optimistic world view. But this was always there, this is something, I think, that helped TH to overcome all the other problems and win UN's love. The things TH says just in passing absolutely blow my mind away.
And this, of course, from a person whom the destiny dealt the worst cards possible. It is not easy to compare, but if we count every single bad thing that happened to TH, the toll will be much higher than for any other person in the series: rape and death of his wife, death of his baby, death of his teacher, betrayal of his best friend, most humiliating slavery, death of his Prince, death of his comrades, torture... The toll can go on and on. I have heard many times in conversations how people express a sentiment "I feel so much for DG" (and I do share the sentiment). But, the math alone gives indication that we should be feeling sorry for TH too. But because he is so strong inside and nothing breaks his humanity, I guess we "forget" to feel sorry for him.
And when after all that TH says things like "humans can't behave this way" or "I don't blame the world for my problems" or "I trust you" or APOLOGIZES to his wife's old lover saying "I feel I've done wrong to you", all I can say – what an awesome guy.
Chul Woong: The absolute neatness of the ending is not only in the way DG sacrifices his life, it is also in the way CW's character ends. CW asks DG why he is sacrificing his life for TH and DG answers "He saved my life once". And this is the answer that breaks CW.
