I didn't like Avatar. But I didn't expect that the most successful box-office robber of all times James Cameron , who hasn't got an Oscar for it yet, is already preparing the ground. Just in case he loses to Katherine Bigelow ("Hurt Locker"), he is already saying things like "well, if this happens, this is because she is a girl!!!!" . If you don't believe me, check (This interview). He also says "may be other people need Oscar more than me". OMPH. I can' believe my ears.
I knew that he is not a man that I could like, but making this kind of remarks????

Date: 2010-02-23 09:11 pm (UTC)Angry Avatar icon is the thing I am going to use for something I doesn't like from now on (and it is not Neytiri's fault).
This is my unhappy icon. :D
Date: 2010-02-23 09:25 pm (UTC)I do have to reccommend that, in spite of not liking Cameron, if you get the chance to see The Abyss, I'd say you should give it a try. Just a little. It's one of my favorite films ever. (Uh, but I don't recommend the exteneded ending version, totally ruins it.)

Date: 2010-02-23 09:41 pm (UTC)I love it!!!
I'm afraid that I will be not inclined to watch anything made by Cameron. :( But if he loses the Oscars (I hope!!) I might feel a bit sorry for him and try something of his that is good.

Date: 2010-02-24 08:39 am (UTC)He's not talking about some random female director and I highly doubt that if he were up against a different female director, one who he isn't divorced from, that he would be saying anything like what he is saying.
Shoddy journalism, not mentioning this little fact which sheds a completely different light on what he is saying. It still makes him look like a jerk, but for a different reason -- he's bitter about their personal relationship -- not that fact that he's competing with a woman.
And honestly, what he said about how the Oscar voting works -- is pretty much spot on. It isn't always about talent, but about what "message" the win sends. For some Academy voters, voting for Kathryn will be about them thinking she's the Best Director. For others, it will be a vote for the woman directory and for others it will be about "I don't like James Cameron so I'm going to stick it to him by voting for his ex-wife." Hollywood is petty and there is nothing more petty than the Oscars.

Date: 2010-02-24 07:25 pm (UTC)I don't think it sheds a different light on the interview, though. (But I admit I didn't read the article itself, I just watched the interview itself - I always prefer to make my own opinion). In a way it makes his comments twice as bad. He is both bitter that he is competing with a woman and that he is competing with his ex-wife. He also muttered something about differences in special effects and such which to me sounded pretty much as "Look!!! She made this cheap film! How can it compare with the ground-breaking Avatar!!!". And his "may be someone needs Oscar more than me" sounded JUST LIKE infamous remarks of Plushenko.
And yes, Oscar voting is full of idiots, but this doesn't exempt the directors from trying to be decent human beings. I hope "Hurt Locker" wins, I really do!
Sorry, I am bitter about 20 pounds our family spent on watching Avatar!!!

Date: 2010-02-24 08:17 pm (UTC)I guess I really just don't see that what he said was particularly awful. He must be getting tired of constantly being asked how it is to be up against Kathryn for the award. I certainly would be. I doubt very much he is being asked about his feelings towards any of the other nominated directors winning.
I don't think saying something negative in response to the prospect is any evidence towards indecency, but I guess we will have to differ on that score.

Date: 2010-02-24 09:46 pm (UTC)1) Saying "I would say that it’s an irresistible opportunity for the Academy to anoint a female director for the first time. I would say that that’s, you know, a very strong probability and I will be cheering when that happens" is equal to saying "It is not about how good the films are, if Kathryn wins it will be because she is a girl, and yes I am saying this sexist thing but I am NOT SEXIST".
2) Saying "Hurt Locker and Avatar are two very different films , both in their aesthetic and their technical ambitions" equals bringing the attention back to the fact how special Avatar's technical ambitions are.
3) Saying "There are other filmmakers that can benefit more" is just exactly the thing Russian figure-skater Plushenko uttered when he lost the Olympic gold - "may be Lysacek needs it more?". These are sore loser remarks and Cameron hasn't even lost yet! Winning or losing is not about how much someone needs the prise, it is about how good they are.
To add, I don't agree with "He must be getting tired of constantly being asked how it is to be up against Kathryn for the award" argument. Isn't it the same for everyone, every year? The runner-uppers are asked the constant stream of questions and they are never pleasant.

Date: 2010-02-26 10:44 pm (UTC)I agree with some commenter above me: The Abyss wasn't too bad, and if you do watch it, don't watch the extended version but rather the original theatrical release. It isn't quite so overblown as his other work...
