GRRRRRRR! Google released an upgrade to the Calendar Application Programming Interface on Wednesday 16.09.2009 which affected quite negatively some things in our uploads of student timetables into their Google calendars. It is also my fault because I should have incorporated certain checks from the very beginning but as sometimes it happens, I didn't . I am sorting this out during the weekend and I am not going to claim overtime because I am feeling guilty.
I have this love/hate relationship with Google. On one hand, they are quietly taking over the world. On the other hand, their Application Programming Interfaces are less than stable and less than excellent.

Date: 2009-09-19 10:52 pm (UTC)I am impressed that you have student timetables in Google calendars. That is way more advanced and cool than our university (which has crappy calendaring system with no attempt at auto-pop of data: Novell if you are familiar with the vendor).

yes, this is quite a neat thing we did last year, and I was honoured to take part in it. We also have on-line timetables as a part of our timetabling software (CMIS) that sounds similar in functionality to what you have but having timetables in Google where students can sync them with their iPhones and such is a good thing, I think.

Date: 2009-09-20 07:59 am (UTC)And Booo! for having to work on the weekend. Hope you are able to fix things.
I wish the programmers at LJ would have the same work ethic as you have. Maybe then they would be able to fix their ongoing problems with their news feeds a bit quicker.

When I am in a fair mood, I feel for the LJ programmers. The thing is complex, world-wide spread but it doesn't strike me as a place with a lot of money to spend. I don't know how many people they have working on it but from what I have seen - not too many. And bugs - they are hard to fix sometimes. :D
I am less lenient towards Google who have the best resources and the brightest guys to work for them. The world is at their fingertips - why can't they fix their API bugs? And I am not even talking about some days when Google mail was out for hours .
