I have been meaning to post about "Fly High" and some other less known dramas for ages (Dear "Air City" and "War of Money" - I promise you! One day!).

"Fly High" is a 19-episode Korean drama of "plucky poor herouine meets icy-cold, full of parental issues hero" type that I watched three month ago. I liked it very much. It has become one of my "comfort on a rainy day" dramas - I like to re-watch the bits of it from time to time.

Plus points:

1. The male lead Kim Nam Jin (he plays James O'Neil), is gorgeous and the female lead, Wang Bit Na (she plays Lee Jin Hee), is adorable.

2. Together they make a strong, unwavering OTP. She is a mother of a cute little boy I am ready to adopt any day, he is a rich bachelor. Please see: this is the scene of their first meeting. Doesn't it spell OTP in big letters? Actually it is the scene of their second meeting, but their first meeting was even better : he falsely accused her of stealing wine from his supermarket".

She has been collecting flowers.

She sees him at her family's door (they are some kind of Korean aristocracy and live in one of picturesque old houses). She sees him and she trips, of course:

FLOWER SHOWER!!!!!!!!!!!

He catches her, only to get a slap on his face. (because they are OTP)

3. This drama does many of my favourite Korean drama stereotypes and it does them very well. Evil parents, good parents, single widowed mothers, pseudo-cousins, evil "other" girl of evilest kind, people in and out of coma, adorable little children, cancer, faithful and true "other guy" - it is all there, packed into the 19 episdes.

4. Kim Nam Jin angsts gorgeously. In one scene, he (driven by angst of falling in love with a woman he can't have) breaks a crystal glass in his hand. And then he goes outside to stand in the pouring rain and angsts some more, blood dripping from his hand. And he stretches his hand to wash the blood under the streams of rain. I don't have enough words to describe how good this scene is.

He tries to angst in peace, in a nice quiet bar, drinking out of a nice crystal glass

But the evil other girl won't stop nagging him, saying things like "Oh, you are like this because because of THAT woman!"

WOW! He brakes the glass in his long beautiful fingers:

He goes outside because he can't stand the nagging anymore. His poor bleeding heart deserves some peace!

Me? My heart is bleeding too. Lee Jin ends up treating his hand, of course

5. James' birth mother is one of the evilest dorama parents I have seen so far. Not only she leaves James as a baby to be adopted by RICH BENEVOLENT AMERICAN PEOPLE! When he finds her later on, she tells him that she dislikes him and that she doesn't want to have anything to do with him. Ever. But at the same time she tries to control his life and tries to split him and his OTP. Oh, the craziest of women! Good job James is not an easy to control person!

6. Drama's settings, costumes and cinematography are gorgeous. Lee Jin Hee's family (by her marriage) are Korean aristocracy who live in one of most gorgeous old houses.

Minus points:

I must warn you that the subtitles of the copy I had were bad, quite difficult to understand sometimes. But I am still very thankful to subbers - this is one of my all-time favourites!

I am so glad. :D Themale lead is gorgeous. You see, in a Korean drama I need a male lead that I can fall in love with. This is my main problem with "Brilliant Legacy" - he is not my type and looks too young (sorry, here I blurted my secret :D)

I understand your problem with Brilliant Legacy. That's my problem with Spring Waltz too. Not that the lead is too young, but that he's not my type at all. The whole thing is good and everything, but I just couldn't get into it because I wasn't the least bit attracted to him.

This is partly why I haven't watched "Spring Waltz" too!! Especially considering I have very warm feelings for Daniel Henney who is the "other guy who is awesome but who still doesn'y get the girl".

Oh man, nothing kills your drama buzz more than when you're not attracted to the male lead, but want to jump the other guy.

I remember you talking about this a while back. It's on my List of Doom. Will get to it one of these days I'm sure. Ah, there's just not enough hours in a day.

I have been meaning to post about "Fly High" for ages! There are quite few dramas I liked that I don't sually see much talked about: "War of Money","H.I.T", "Air City", etc. I must post abut them one day - they deserve it!

I know what you mean! But becuase I tend to watch dramas in one singe go (I think you mentioned you like to do similar watching), often through the night, I found recently that I have watched quite few dramas already.

Unfortunately congrats are NOT in order, as I was just downsizing within the same apartment complex. (And of course, as it was the shortest distance I've ever moved, it was also the worst experience I've ever had!) But I do appreciate your enthusiasm, thank you. =) Hopefully one of these days I'll have real cause to celebrate a move, with a new job.

Downsizing sounds less exciting. I hope it aall works out well! And good job hunting wishes!!!!

Heeeeeee...! I am watching this! Which one is better -- Fly High or 2 End 9 Outs? ^^ I need a happy pill!

Date: 2009-07-21 01:02 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com
YAY! I think "9 end 2 outs" is a better show, but I don't know which one you'd like more! "Fly High" is a typical Korean drama about icy guys, romance, family, etc. "9 end 2 outs" is not typical at all - it is really funny but it doesn't do too many Kdrama stereotypes.
