I am in southern california right now and people love them around here. They wear in spring and with shorts.
I think the fad starting from australia may have something to do with it. I also think it is more about the look rather than the warmth in places like southern california. Uggs are expensive so they symbolize some kind of income. Also in colder places where they actually get snow, uggs are too expensive to ruin them in snow.
Also even just wearing a scarf around the next, or socks make a huge difference in how warm your entire body is. So while you can go around in tanktops and shorts in cool weather, you can warm up with uggs which balances out your overall comfort level.
You see, I have also been curious about this phenomena and have given it some thought. LOL. It boggled my mind until I worked some the reasons out. I still think the combination of shorts and uggs is weird though.
