There were not many surprises in this year's Oscars. All three films among the biggest winners ( "Slumdog Millionaire", "Milk" and "Reader") had award-winning-guaranteed theme formulas. I wish, though, that Mickey Rourke could win.
It always seems to be difficult to make a choice in animation film category, they are usually ALL lovely. But huge cheers for "Wall-E"!!! My daughter and I watched (and enjoyed) "Bolt" on Friday and after the film we were discussing this year's children films. She said that "Wall-E" is still the best..

But of course, Oscar's is such a great fun because it is ALL ABOUT DRESSES!!! Here is my personal collection of favourite and not so favourite dresses:

Let's start from my favourite dress:

Melissa Leo: the colour is so unusual and suits so perfectly to the actress' individual style and her beauty.

Freida Pinto: gorgeous dress

Amy Adams: rich bold colour and heavenly necklace

Angelina Jolie: she looks like a queen in this cassic black dress

Anne Hathaway Meryl Streep: stylish glamour and glamorous style

Morisa Tomei: intricate, sophisticated and elegant

Taraji P. Henson: the bag she is holding is to die for.

Tilda Swindon: she is awesome in everytrhing she does or wears

Viola Davis: Call me a shine junkie but I love this!

Evan Rachel Wood: This is [livejournal.com profile] dianora77's favorite and I agree - this dress is almost ethereal.

Dresses I didn't like. Many lace curtains were wasted

Beyonce: Where have your favourite curtains gone? Here?

Jessica Biel: Or may be this is where your favorite curtains gone?

Penelope Cruz: I don't dislike the dress as such, but it totally lacks any individuality..

Nicole Kidman: I don't like the fluffy bits sticking out of this dress, they remind me of chicken.

S. J. Parker: Again, the dress itself is not too bad. But there is a limit when thin doesn't look good anymore. The actress and the dress exist separately, she is falling out of it:

Kate Winslet: There is something very odd and not very pretty going on here, with the asymmetrical shoulder cut, satin, lace and Kate's mannerisms . This is the second worst dress of the night.

Kate Winslet 2: Some net curtains were savaged somewhere.

Sofia Loren: But no dress was as bad as this one. BRRRRRRRR. I imagine this horror costs a pretty penny too!

Separate category. Mickey Rourke

Last night was the first time since I can remember that I didn't watch the Oscars... So thanks a ton for the clothes summary (because everyone knows it's all about the dresses anyway)!

I agreee totally about Kate Winslet's dress. Just, no. It makes her look rather big too. And Nicole Kidmans's dress... how I desperately want to love it because I love her so much. But it's horrid. The neckline is particularly bad, and makes her look saggy. (Not even going to say a think about poor Sophia Loren, who got some REALLY bad advice on fashion)

I think out of all of these, Morisa Tomei's dress is my favorite. That dress is to die for.

I don't usually watch the ceremony - too long. :D But I like scouting for pictures.

Kate Winslet looks like a wrestler in a dress in some of the shots. HBut hey, she won the Oscar and I love her as an actress.

It is a strange thing with Nicole Kidmans's dress - this is the first time I see her wearing something that is not "prefect". But everyone makes a mistake once in a while, I guess.

I'm a film geek. Usually I watch all of the awards ceremonies... but Asian dramas won this time!

I love her too, I think she's fabulous. It's just odd that she'd have just a major clothing mistep when she's been lovely at all the other shows.

I agree. It was bound to happen sometime. Noone can look that good all the time :)

I usually find that my opinion of what the best film should be rarely agrees with the opinion of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science. :D

May be she changes her fashion adviser?

Penelope Cruz's dress is very pretty, but it looks like she got it at one of those David's Bridal $99 sales. Nothing special, very bride-ish.

I'd never seen Mickey Rourke before, and now I don't think I'll ever be able to take him seriously...

Absolutely! This kind of clashes with her image that is usually not so much of "young teen".

I LOVED Mickey in "The Wrestler", he looks very weird, I must say, but the film is marvelous.

I'm just glad Angelina didn't show up in a mumu.

I don't mind seeing it once, but it got a bit boring after a while. ;)

Hee! It reminded me of a Russian superstar singer (may be you know her?) Alla Pugacheva. She ALWAYS dresses in mumu.

Um, doesn't ring a bell. But I can imagine. Hehehe...

Personally, my fav Oscar dress (and all around look) was this one, on Evan Rachel Wood.

I've a soft spot for Marion Cotillard as well, cause her gown was questionable, yet I still loved, loved, loved her in it. :D

Oh, I had Rachel's dress saved too, but because I ahven't seen/heard of her before I didn't post it. It is a lovely, lovely dress. I might update the post now. :D

I love the way her hair are done, but the dress is "too much " for me, I prefer simpler styles. But it is not bad, I think..

It's kinda goth, I'd wear it with some crazy, high-platformed boots. Hehehe... Yeah, like I said, it's just because she's so lovely that I don't mind the dress as much as I probably would on anyone else. :D

I have added the Rachel's dress to the post. The only big minus is that her and Morisa Tomei's dresses look similar.

I agree here - it may look really effective with boots. For an award ceremony - a bit too much of lace curtains look.

Wood played the daughter in The Wrestler. You may not have recognized her because of her new-ish hair color change!

Indeed! Thank you very much - I have been raking my brain for the last 30 minutes. She was lovely there and she looks SO different with different hair and clothing!

I love reading people's fashion wrap-ups, because so many times people's opinions are diametrically opposed. I never think a whole lot about it myself, but I have to agree with you on Sofia Loren's dress. Ugh.

I love reading them too - and as you, I don't take these things too seriously. You can like or don't like somethings, but the dresses are the works of art themselves. I love it.

I seem to be in agreement with all of your picks!

I didn't watch much of the ceremony as the only nominated film I saw was The Wrestler. Lately money has been tight so I very rarely go to the movies. And I adore seeing films at the theatre. Sigh.

Oh, I wish times will get better for you! It seems to be a rather tight time for so many people. I haven't seen much myself - I am intending to watch "Slumdog" and "Reader" soon (though I am afraid a little, Nazism is really a personal theme for me).

*de-lurks* Hi!

I agree that Jessica Biel's dress was not very flattering.

I too wish that Mickey Rourke would have won, and I love how you put him in a separate category :D

I loved Freida Pinto's & Evan Rachel Wood's dresses, they were gorgeous, really - the kind of dresses you like to dream about!

Honestly, I wish Frank Langella won :(

Heee. I have to say, I liked Beyonce's. And Natalie Portman's! Hated Melissa Leo's hair but liked her dress. I did not like Marissa Tomei's--too many pleats! Liked the fit of Meryl Streep's, but wished she'd picked a cheerier color.

Beyonce has such a lovely figure that anything looks good. :D I liked Natalie's dress too (especially the colour), but I couldn't find a full picture of it, she was always hiding behind the stand.

I think Evan Rachel Wood's dress may be my favorite of the night. It's so simple and pretty. I'm really disappointed with Kate's dress. She usually picks much better dresses. I agree with your comment about Nicole. The silhouette of the dress is something she usually wears but what is with the stuff sticking out. O_o

Angelina Jolie's green jewels were so pretty!

The fluffy bits look like something that can look good in theory and even can look good in RL, but when photographed looks rather very odd. But I always admire Nicole's style!
