Korean drama love: Resurrection

I was recommended this drama by [livejournal.com profile] timescout. This is one of the dramas I wish were better known. It was made by Park Chan Hong, the same guy who did wonderful "Mawang/Devil" and touches on the same themes : revenge, manipulation, deceit. The story is about twin brothers (both played by Uhm Tae Woong) separated at the moment of their father's death (one of the favourite cliche's of yours truly) at the hands of his "friends". Although one of the brothers got lost and lost his memory he has grown up to be a cop as his father . He starts to untangle his father's death and eventually finds his other brother, who has grown up to be a Vice-president of a large corporation in the family of one of their father's "friends". But as the brothers meet, as they say "by the cruel twist of fate", the Vice-president brother is taken for the cop-brother and murdered by the same guys who killed their father. The cop-brother vows revenge and takes upon himself the identity of the Vice-president brother. THIS IS SO THE COUNT OF MONTE CHRISTO.

The drama is made by an awesome cinematographer, Byeon Chun Ho. The angles, the scenes, the colours are very fascinating and add to the story. The storylines make good sense so far (I have watched 8 episodes). The drama has angst and it has forbidden love between the Cop Brother and his adopted pseudo-sister Eun Ha. He is very honourable about it but he can not resist:

7-year old Eun Ha (played in adult version by "Capital Scandal"'s Han Ji Min) is bossy. She has a favourite place, near the sea, with two light-houses. She gives the red one to her new "brother" and keeps the white one for herself:

Later, the teenage Eun Ha and Ha Eun share a touching scene near the lighthouses, their special place:

"You smell of sea. Yumm"

When Eun Ha tells HA Eun that she loves him (way to go girl), he at first tries to be honourable about this and rejects her, even though he loves her. Eun Ha runs away , just to make him see sense. HA Eun finds her in their old place and this scene happens:

Mmmm! I have this on my short list and will start it asap now. I haven't been able to find a kdrama to draw me in for a while (except the currently airing Kingdom of the Winds) so this will be good.

I think you might like this one, there is plenty of plot in this drama. It resembles "Mawang" quite a bit. And pseudo-sibling love - who can resist! I also like both "third wheels", especially the girl. She is lovely and she is another strong female character (and we just found out that the Vice-President brother was really in love with her, though he was all messed up and didn't know how to express his feelings. ** sniff **).

Yay! For a brand new Resurrection post. *g*

Aaaaawww.... Love that scene. But then I tend to enjoy watching UTW kissing. He always seems to give it his all. XD

I'm on ep 10 on the re-watch run now. I've been stalled by RL and a bit peeved about that. Maybe tomorrow....

I'm so glad you've liked it so far and look forward to further comments.

I need more Resurrection icons, guess I havta make some....

He does do kissing well, I must say. One of my biggest peeves in Kdrama (and especially in Jdrama where I don't rememebr any decent kissing scenes) is close-lip-two-cold-manequens kissing. The dramas are ususally so passionate but this spoils it all for me,

I think I can safely say I like it very much (considering no-one dies as well!)

I usually never expect any good kissing scenes in Jdramas

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I am resigning myself with this too. There must be cultural reasons for this, similar to the fact that in wuxia there are usually no kisses whatsoever.

I think it's because of how conservative their society is? Or rather... how conservative their media is.

What boggles my mind is why there is a difference in what is "allowed" in films and what is "allowed" in TV show. Asian films aren't as shy. Why?

[identity profile] aici-rua.livejournal.com 2008-12-13 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, the audience of Asian television shows are much more than of Asian movies. Plus, people can just randomly see what happens in each channel while in movies, you watch by choice, expecting what to see.

That is true, but surely they must have different time slots for things with different age ratings.

Also, I found a beutiful exception from the rule - Ice world (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Ice_World), a Jdrama with beautiful kisses. I watched all 11 episodes in one day and a half. SO AWESOME. ;D

It looks awesome too :D I was wondering why I never heard of it though... then I saw it was shown in 1999 :D

I will totally watch this after my exams

Yes, this is one of the older dramas that I also haven't heard of. I came across it in a community and it immediately caught my attention . Takenouchi Yutaka is soooooo pretty! I have posted the kiss pictures and the synopsis here ( http://alexandral.livejournal.com/222503.html#cutid1 ), no spoilers.

Did he just kiss her neck in one picture there?

-squee-

The drama is very unusual for a Japanese drama. :D

Oh, I also heartily rec "Ressurection". :D

[identity profile] itsplashes.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You said Umh Tae Woong and I was already hooked. :) Thank you for the rec. Putting it up on my to-watch list.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
YAY! I have only seen Umh Tae Woong in "MAwang", but I definitely want to see more of him too. Great acting!

[identity profile] timescout.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
You won't go wrong with Resurrection, even if it has it's faults. UTW is simply awesome in it!

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I am not sure if the plot "Ressurection" is as good as "Mawang" yet, but it is miles better than 90% of dramas ("East of Eden", I am looking at you!), I am certain.

Wow the visuals are beautiful for this one.

Very similar to "Mawang"!
