RUSSIA IS THE WINNER! And I think I just promised Sasha to go to Moscow next year and watch Eurovision live. I hope she will forget. :D

UK is the last. AND THIS IS NOT THE FIRST YEAR!

To my double Russian/ UK self the results are confusing.

Hee! I repeat my congratulations! And don't be to sure that Sasha will forget. These are the kind of promises that children remember after all. ;D

But I must admit I thought of you when I saw Russian winning, and the Uk absolutely last. A bit conflicted perhaps? ;)

Hee! You might be very right. May be we will enjoy having a big Eurovision adventure nest year.

He-he! UK is always the last. :D And I have NEVER seen the UK guy before!

*g* At least you didn't do like Ireland and send a turkey in a box.

And here's hoping you and Sasha will have a great adventure. :)

Ever since they had to host Eurovision three years in a row Ireland is very cautious about it. :D

No offense, but I thought Russian song was really bad. But I might be biased cause I can't stand Evgeni Plushenko. Hehe... ;)
I was rooting for Laka and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Turkey was really good too. But from the semi-finals, I honestly thought Portugal was going to win. But they lacked magic in the final.

Have fun next year! :)

Me tooooo! Er, Plushenko and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Still, it could be worse. Maybe. I mean, Germany was pretty awful. And the UK.

I must admit I have nothing against Plushenko, but it was a bit odd with him showing up in the Eurovision like that. Then again IIRC last time Dima entered he had a woman in a piano, so odd stage shows are possibly a trend.

I think he did it cause the violinist (Edvin Marton) accompanied him in several of his skating programs, and I guess they're great friends and collaborators. Actually I don't know which one got invited to play (or skate) on the Eurosong first, but perhaps whoever did invited the other one to tag along. :)

Aaah! That explains it a bit (and I thought I had seen that violinist before).

Oh and I agree with you in regards to Bosnia&Herzegovina and Portugal - but I must admit that Portugal's costumes were a bit distracting. The kept flying all over the place.

I don't remember the entry from Portugal so well - was it a lady with enormous earrings? Yes indeed, costumes were distracting. But she did the singing part well.

Yes, big earrings and a blue dress. All the back-up singers were dressed in white, billowing dresses - and that is what I remember best. The singing (which was good) came second.

Re: costumes. This year was the year of beady skirts

Definitely! (and I love the use of icon btw). Beady skirts and tiny, tiny dresses.

The back-up singers were definitely stealing the attention.

Beady skirts and tiny, tiny dresses.

There were also huge amount of belly dancing this year, even more than usually.

I... actually, I know this! Germany's band was one of those reality TV assembly things in the early 2000s, and the UK dude was also some sort of reality TV participant.

THIS EXPLAINS SO MUCH.

THIS EXPLAINS SO MUCH.

This indeed does! I have big ranting capacities for reality TV assemblies. The ladies from Germany looked as a crazy version of Spice Girls.

Thank you for the info!

Actually, the German girls were the only ones I knew about before this. They were quite popular on German MTV some years ago. But they sang horribly tonight. The alto was especially jarring.

Thank you! I liked the Russian song and the Dima Belan is one of my secret guilty pleasures since my last year's visit to Russia. But I agree about the ice-skating number. Hmm, I don't even know who Evgeni Plushenko is.

I was rooting for Bosnia and Herzegovina myself. And France. But my favourite singing-wise number was the guy from Israel. The guy had a great voice.

When I heard the Israeli guy (without looking at the telly) I at first thought it was a woman singing. But yeah, nice voice.
Plushenko is the name of the skater. He's probably the most famous Russian male skater in recent times. He won practically everything. And since I'm always rooting for the underdogs, I have a particular grudge against him. Plus, he's such a showoff. :P

Oh, I see! I stopped following ice-skating in the UK. Dima Belan (the singer) is also a bit of a crazy diva.

I couldn't help but see Dima Belan all over TV last summer. I am not a pop-music person but couple of his songs were ** guilty smile ** catchy.

I haven't seen much of ice skating since I am in the UK. They don't show it so much here (may be because they don't have too many good competitors from the UK) and people generally are not that interested. However, Eurovision is a big thing and everyone is watching it (for fun, mainly :D) , people making sweepstakes and etc. All our guys from work always watch Eurovision.

I was rooting for Bosnia myself This item got Mr.Alexander awake (who fell asleep at the beginning). So ..how to say it.. innovative? I need me the songs' lyrics. Were they about "laundry vs love"?

I don't have a clue who the ice-skater is but I thought the piece of ice was too tiny. :D Imagine - he could have fallen and disgraced himself?

Enough was already said and explained about the German participants so I don't have to say more. Maybe one thing. In case you were wondering why Bulgaria gave us 12 points, one of the singers is from Bulgaria. :)

I didn't watch it, but looking throught the pictures of all the participants I think I would've given her a few points (http://www.spiegel.de/fotostrecke/0,5538,PB64-SUQ9MzE3NTImbnI9NQ_3_3,00.html). ;D

I understand. :D The problem was that three ladies - from Armenia, Greece and Ukraina looked like identical twins, equipped with beady skirts. All three of them did very well , however!

Eurovision is a lot of fun!

From wikipedia:
"The Eurovision Song Contest (French: Concours Eurovision de la Chanson)[1] is an annual competition held among active member countries of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
Each member country submits a song to be performed on live television and then casts votes for the other countries' songs to determine the most popular song in the competition. Each country participates via one of their national EBU-member television stations, whose task it is to select a singer and a song to represent their country in the international competition."

And Origins:
"In the 1950s, as a war-torn Europe rebuilt itself, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU)—based in Switzerland—came up with the idea of an international song contest whereby countries would participate in one television programme, to be transmitted simultaneously to all countries of the union. This was conceived during a meeting in Monaco in 1955 by Marcel Bezençon, a Frenchman working for the EBU.[9] The competition was based upon the existing Sanremo Music Festival held in Italy,[10] and was also seen as a technological experiment in live television: in those days, it was a very ambitious project to join many countries together in a wide-area international network. "

In the UK it is very popular, but mostly in a fun way. :D
Imagine Japanese pop performed by the countries of Europe. Eurovision has : crazy items, on-scene ice-skaters, costume changes, dancing, sequins, IT HAS IT ALL. In the UK it is habitual to have Eurovision parties and sweepstakes.

I think many things about Eurovision are political. No country seems to feel any strong political connection with the UK. :D
