Sticky post: Korean dramas ratings list (now with comments)

I like making lists and tables and all such things. It seemed a good idea to start my Korean dramas ratings list - I find other people's lists to be a very useful source of recommendation.

I tried to be fair, ignore any of my subjective feelings for one or another drama, but at the same time I took into consideration my more objective feelings on, for example, how well women are portrayed? or can this drama benefit from cutting some of the unnecessary scenes and improving pace?. Also I tried to apply the general criteria of how good the story, humour, dialogue, acting, direction and characters are and how much sense the ending makes (but poor ending doesn't mean sad ending - sad ending might make sense too). Some other criteria I applied are: innovativeness ,cinematography and cultural impact. I also tried to take into consideration the average opinion of the fans, where I knew it.

The list only contains the dramas that I have seen in their entirety (but sometimes I used fast forward). There isn't many dramas that receive less 5 out of 10 on this list - this is just because I don't usually continue watching a drama that I don't find good to a certain degree. I will be adding more dramas and comments as I continue and link the dramas to their Drama Wiki pages. I want to add Japanese drama ratings later too.

Cinderella's sister	7	Well-written drama about family, healing and love.
City Hall	7	Small-town politics can be very hot.
Chuno	9	I willl need more time to express the awesomeness that is Chuno in full.
Coffee Prince	7	Great cross-dressing drama in slice-of-life style
Conspiracy in the Court	8	A bit too complex at times, but awesome nonetheless
Crazy for You	6	Get hankies ready for lots of angst.
Creating destiny	6	Lovely main couple, the rest pretty forgettable.
Dal Ja's Spring	6	Main herouine looks very odd. She falls in love with a younger man.
Daemul	7	Well-acted and well-written. heavy on politics
Damo	8	For the lovers of strong female characters - one of the best historical dramas there is.
Dear heaven	7	Solid old-school family drama with Yoon Jung Hee.
Delightful Girl Choon Hyang	5	Second half dragged and dragged and dragged.
Dream High	6	As pretty and as sweet as multicolored candy.
Fantasy couple	7	Slightly hyperactive but the chemistry between Han Ye Seul and Oh Ji Ho makes all things very very good.
Family's honour	7	The best family drama I have seen so far - I want subtitles!
Fly High	7	It is never late. All you need is determination.
Full House	7	Very lovable.
Get Karl! Oh Soo Jung	5	The main herouine is a gold-digger and the whole drama is set to prove that it is fine to be one. but Oh Ji Ho is gorgeous.
Goong	9	Absolute classic.
Great Inheritance	7	Good family drama.
H.I.T	7	Interesting serial-killer story with a strong lady cop and a prosecutor in love with her. She saves his life at least twice..
Hello My Teacher	7	Forbidden love between a teacher and her pupil.
Hello! Miss	5	Somewhat odd, but worthy of watching for the second couple's sake.
Hero	6	Funny, with several engaging characters.
Honesty	6	Not for you if you don't like Ryu Shi Won.
Hotelier	6	Korean "Pretty Woman".
How to Meet a Perfect Neighbor,	6	Park Shi Hoo is insanely pretty.
Hong Gil Dong	6	Good at the beginning, but has some problems from the feminist POV and poor ending.
Iljimae	6	Solid historical drama, but nothing out of ordinary
Jejoongwon	6
In-Soon is Pretty	4	Two main leads have no chemistry together whatsoever.
Last Scandal	8	Loved it
Lawyers of The Great Republic Korea (The)	6	Quite good drama, but lags.
Let's Go To The Beach	6	Quite adorable drama with Lee Wan. No kisses.
Lovers	7	Romance! Romance! Romance!
Lovers in Paris	7	For the lovers of romance stories, but the second half is not as good as the first.
Lovers in Prague	6	Feels less engaging than the other "Lovers!"
Marry me, Mary	7	Not the best as far as writing goes, but made me grin from ear to ear , all the way through. Extra point for lovely music.
Mawang	10	Perfect drama. Watch it!
Money's Warfare	8	Like no other drama I have seen.
My girl	7	One of the best traditional dramas: a love story between pseudo-siblings with abundance of strange fashions.
My Lovely Sam-Soon	8	Very unusual, more like a Western romance story.
My sweet Seoul.	6	A breath of fresh air, but it is pity that "a girl over 30 has to be dying to get a man" storyline is so terribly overdone.
Nine Tailed Fox	7	Do you like vampire stories as I do?
One Percent of Anything	6	Good family drama with Kang Dong Won (who should make more dramas)
Partner	7	Great chemistry between Lee Dong Wook and Kim Hyun Joo
Pasta	6	Lee Sun Gyun's voice is so soft and velvety
Piano	6	Piano! Angst! Stepsibling Love! Angst! More Angst!
Powerful Opponents	6	This could have been so good if not for the most confusing ending of all times.
Prosecutor Princess	6	The leads are excellent.
Queen of Housewives	7	Much better than the title implies.
Resurrection	7	They make very good revenge dramas in Korea
Scale of providence	5	Good actors, "all over the place" plot and unresolved shipping
Secret Garden	7	Romantic makjang. Cousin Oska is adorable and makes the drama.
Sign	7	Starts a bit shaky, but becomes really good in the second half. For someone who wants something different.
Snow White	7	Good traditional "Cinderella story" drama.
Soul	8	Like "A Tale of two susters" 10 episodes long, and just as good
Star's Lover	6	Choi Ji Woo , Yoo Ji Tae and lots of chemistry.
Still, marry me	6	Nice girly drama.
Take Care of the Young Lady	6	Messy but adorable
Temptation of an angel	7	For the fans of traditional melodrama. Revenge, illegitimate children, comas and plastic surgery abound, everything is deliciously over the top.
Terroir	6	Can you love two people at once?
Thank you	6	Slightly emotionally manipulative.
The Legend	10	Perfect period fantasy drama
The Painter of the Wind	8	Paintings are cool!!!
The Scale of Providence	5	Great chemistry between the two main male characters. Forgettable female leads. One of the most direction-less dramas that I have seen.
The Snow Queen	7	Terminal illness drama done right. With Hyun Bin.
The Vineyard Man	4	The ugliest male lead - where did they find him?
Thorn Birds	6	Family drama crossed with makjang. Good points: totaly adorable kid and Han Hye Jin a.
Time Between Dog and Wolf	6	Gangsta story with lots of hot romance and Lee Jun Ki.
Tree of Heaven	7	I start weeping from just thinking about it.
Triple	6	Poor ending.
What Happened in Bali	6	Very depressing.
What's Up Fox?	5	Unconventional and cheeky.
When It's At Night	7	One of the best female characters in Korean drama.
Who Are You?	6	The screen time devoted to the unfunny father is the time lost.
Wish upon a star/ Pick the stars	6	Guilty pleasure.
Winter Sonata	7	Korean first lady likes it.
Will it snow for Christmas	6	Angst-fest with most gorgeous Goo Soo.
Witch Amusement	6	Lovely but no substance.
Women of the sun	6	Revenge, lost siblings, hot guys, childhood loves, angst etc.
You are beautiful	7	The best in the "young love" category. Also very funny and has exceptionally beautiful music.

These are the dramas I have watched in full (there are quite few dramas I gave up on but I don't think it is quite fair for me to judge a drama without finishing it). I will appreciate any new drama recommendations.

Thank you so much for understanding!!! It was hard, though. I, for example, enjoyed "Take Care of the Young Lady" sooo much but deep down in my heart I know it is not that good for quite a number of reasons so I had to give it just a 6. :(

Just for me to understand (since I have never seen a "dorama" and know close to nothing about them), these are all series that are one season long, and consist of 10, 15 or maybe 20 episodes, but that's about it, then they have an ending?

Yes, normally these are 16 or 20 or 24 episodes long. There are different formats in Korean dramas too - some 50+ and some 100+ episodes, but my preferable format is these "mini-series". And yes, they all have a definitive ending, even the longer ones. This is one of the reasons I like them - they remind me of the format we used to have in Russia when I grew up. I find never-ending American shows quite frustrating to watch, especially if they last several seasons.

Hi, I'm coming from Dorama Chat too. I've always liked he idea of the drama-list+ratings, and I enjoy reading them, but since yours is so much longer than mine I haven't many titles to suggest.

I would say: "Beethoven Virus". I'm watching it right now, and it turned out to be completely different from what I expected. I thought it was serious and boring, but instead I've found it refreshing, funny and so far I think that the theme of a group of people who are trying to regain their love for music is quite interesting, and has some dept.

You gave 10 to "The Legend"? I really have to watch it.

I am a bit sad that he is not going to "get the girl" in "Beethoven virus" , but after the happy feel of "You are beautiful" I think I can cope with that. he gets to wear a short haircut there - I want to see "Beethoven virus" just for that. :D

I adored Last Scandal - high school sweethearts and reunited, except she's now a drab housewife, and he's a wildly successful actor. Will they find love again? Need you even ask? rainscene did a pimp post a while back.

I liked That Fool/Accidental Couple/Six Months, although I certainly don't think it's for everyone - She's a super famous actress, and he's a plain-bordering-on-unattractive postal worker. They enter into a fake marriage after her relationship with an engaged politician (her high school sweetheart) is nearly discovered. I love "pretending to be married" dramas, so that really impacted how much I enjoyed the series.

Fantasy Couple - She's rich and strong-willed ("bitchy"), and he's a working class man who pinches every penny. They clash horribly (of course!). When she ends up with a case of amnesia, he decides to get payback by telling her that they're lovers (not for any sexual reason, he needs help with the housework and with the three nephews he's raising). By the Hong Sisters, the same duo with did You're Beautiful.

That Fool/Accidental Couple/Six Months: I love "pretend to be married and then fall in love" stories too, but wasn't this one something about their accidental one-night stand? I don't really like one-night stand stories. But I am going to check this one !

Fantasy Couple : I have been wanting to watch this for ages but I was a bit angry with Hong sisters after the ending of "Hong Gil Dong". ;D I have mellowed after "You are beautiful" - I must definitely watch it!

:D That's a long list! I was looking at your ratings and you seem to rate all the dramas I liked fairly high and those that I didn't enjoy very much not as high. Hopefully you'll like my recommendations. :D

Story of a Man - This series has made my all time favorite! It's not so big on the romantic side because it's more suspenseful than anything, but the little romance they have with the main lead and the antagonist's sister is sweet. I love them so much. I loved all the characters except for the main lead's (ex)girlfriend, and that's a first for me. If you do watch this, it's better if you don't spoil yourself. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ (100/10)

Fashion 70s - I was in love with this drama for a long time. When I first read the summary, I wasn't interested, but when it was kdrama of the month at D-addicts, I decided to try it. This is a very interesting drama! I suppose I watched mainly to see what would happen rather than for the romance. (9/10)

Soulmate - I have watched this drama more than five times, and that's saying a lot since I would rather spend my time watching all sorts of new dramas. The couple I love didn't meet or get together until episode 7-8. I couldn't stand one of the girl characters though. This one is a romantic comedy~ (9/10)

Hwang Jin Ni - This is one of my favorite historical dramas. I think the drama is SO much better than the movie because Ha Ji Won was so great as Jin Ni, but a lot of peope disagree with me because they say she isn't as pretty as Song Hye Gyo (who played the movie version of HJN). I would not recc the movie at all... The drama made me cry and the dancing was beautiful~ (8/10)

Fantasy Couple - This drama cracked me up. I love the movie this drama was based of of. If you've seen Overboard with Goldie Hwan and Kurt Russell, you'll know what the main plot of this drama is about~ (7/10)

Wonderful Life - I personally loved this drama, and I love Kim Jae Won and Eugene. Their daughter is one of the cutest little girls I have ever seen too! I saw that you didn't like one-night stand dramas, but I hope maybe you will give this one a chance? This drama is really family based and cute. (7/10)

Sweet 18 - I watched this drama in one sitting. I like seeing how dramas work with arranged marriage dramas, and I thought this was really cute. I felt that the second girls' role wasn't that important...(6/10)

I have seen "Hwang Jin Ni", but not in full, it was just TOO SAD for me, although I agree it is quite a brilliant (and has young Jang Geun Suk as well). I prefer Ha Ji Won's Jin Ni to Song Hye Gyo's - Song Hye Gyo's acting has always been a bit static for me.

And thank you so much for the second "Fantasy Couple" rec - this and "Story of a man" are probably at the top of the list now.

I second 'Story of a Man/Slingshot'. It's my favourite drama of this year, going over IRIS even.

'Fantasy Couple' is the only Hong sisters drama that I've seen and liked all the way through. Maybe because it's not quite so typically their style.

I seem to be recommending 'Stranger than Paradise' again these days but I really liked it, so there. Lee Sung Jae and UTW, the perfect couple, LOL! Well, their names ARE the 2 top ones in DramaWiki. ;P That synopsis is a bit misleading though. Gah, maybe I should just do a StP post one of these days....

'Bad Family' was all kinds of fun! If you are in a need of a cute little story that also puts smile on you're face, try this. Kim Myung Min (of the Bethoven Virus fame) is so good as the failed gangster who's paid to put together a fake family for a little girl who lost her real one (to help her regain her memory). Such a bunch of odd characters, all in need of a family in one way or other. And the little girl is beyond adorable.

I haven't been able to finish QSS yet either. I can only do it a few episodes a time too.

I must get back to "Story of a Man", I must. I am still on the fence with IRIS - I like it but it has to prove it to me that it is more than big budget + Lee Byun Hun.

I like some of Hong sisters dramas and some of the others I am so- so about. They are very good at writing funny stuff.

I remember you reccing "Stranger than Paradise", I must watch it one of these days. The thought of UTW not getting the girl (once again!) have been always stopping me.

I am thirding Soulmate (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Soulmate). Seriously. This drama hooked me like no other. And it's a bit shorter than other dramas (12 episodes I think) so it's nice to break up bigger stuff.
Try Miss Kim's Billion Won Quest (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Miss_Kim_Makes_1_Million) or The Man Who Can't Get Married (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/The_Man_Who_Can%27t_Get_Married) because I love Ji Jin Hee.
It was a long time ago, but I remember liking this one 18 vs. 29 (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/18_vs._29) which has the amnesia storyline.
I also liked When It's At Night despite the fact that it was a rather poorly written show, but under no circumstances will I try watching Powerful Opponents again.

I think you should give Alone in Love a try.
It's a pretty low-key, underrated kdrama about a married couple who divorced after the death of their baby but they still keep in touch and fall in love again. It's only 16 eps and drags a bit around eps 10/11 but it's really good!

I like Hero a lot -I haven't expected to like it so much. Lee Jun Ki plays a lovely guy and the main gal is rather awesome, but also the story is quite intriguing and the other characters are funny. This drama is just another prof that Kdrama ratings are not to be trusted.

I will recommend "Strongest Chil Woo" AKA "The Mighty Chilwu"
It stars Eric Mun, Koo Hye Sun,and Lee Un (RIP:( )

Another Eric drama I found funny was Super Rookie. It made me lal at some points which I don't do much. And actually Oh Ji Ho is in it too.

My top three, having only seen about 15 k-dramas, are: Dae Jang Geum, Beethoven Virus, and My Lovely Sam Soon.

Now I notice that Dae Jang Geum is conspicuous by its absence from your list. I didn't notice a lot of sageuks, generally, on the list. Is it that you don't like sageuks? Or is there something about Dae Jang Geum that you don't like, having watched some of it, or heard about it from others? My guess is that a lot of viewers don't find it appealing because romance is not a big part of the story. I like romance too, but to me the story of human achievement is the most important element of a drama. Romance comes second. And Jang Geum is a heroic achiever. I'm a little surprised a story about an extraordinary female achiever doesn't make your list.

Beethoven Virus I love because of Kim Myung Min's character, the maestro. I love his devotion to his chosen profession, and his utter disregard for being politically correct. He says what he believes, whether anyone else likes it or not.

As for Kim Sam Soon, I just love Kim Sun Ah. I loved her in When It's at Night, also.

If I were to make a list, the only 10 would be Dae Jang Geum.

I am only recently getting into sageuks, a sheer length of some or tragic endings of many kept me from watching too many of them, but I have never heard of "Dae Jang Geum". Now, after "Chuno" ended on such a great note, I am in a mood for sageuks. I will definitely try Dae Jang Geum !! Thank you!

As for Kim Sam Soon, I just love Kim Sun Ah. I loved her in When It's at Night, also.

I've just watched ep 6 of Worlds within. I really love this drama. I'm thrilled to see all the bts and the cute moments between the leads. And best of all, it doesn't drag.

RE: The Vineyard man. Oh Man-suk may not be a hot adonis, but imho he's a very talented actor and a great singer. Actually, he was a pretty well-known musical actor before debuting in dramas/movies and he's made some unfortunate choices with his dramas. Anyhow, he played even in Hedwig and the angry inch which, you probably know, has been a huuuuuge hit in Korea (The origin of love sung by OMS). If I ever go to Korea, I hope I can see him perform on stage. In the Vineyard man, the thick accent threw me though. And hey, did you notice who was the second male lead? Did you recognize him? Hint hint. Chuno. Personal Taste.

Vineyard man: I don't know what is wrong with me, but may because of such abundance of good-looking Korean actors, or may be because of the romantic nature of most Kdramas, I find it hard to get into a Kdrama that has a male lead I don't like the look of. I am not like this with films or Western Tv shows.

Oh..I love this list! I just finished Prosecutor Princess and I give it a 10. It didn't drag at the end and the romance was so well done - great chemistry and not an over the top ending! I understand is difficult to remain objective. There are so many dramas that I like but I know they aren't...mh...perfect (and sometimes the ratings are really low-_-"), but...make me feel good XD
I saw "You're beautiful" and yes, it's so funny XD and I really like the OST°_° and has made known to me (and Korea): Geun Suk*-* (well and also Hong ki, Yong Hwa and Park HyeXD).

Uhm "My Lovely Sam-Soon", for me is a classic, is one of the first Korean drama that I saw and I liked it very much! Sadly didn't like to my friends... I also liked this OST!
I also really liked coffee prince (even if I start from the sixth episodeXD but then I saw them allU_U).
