Of the ones I saw so far Bin-jip is my favourite movie from Kim Ki-duk (I also liked The Isle but not so much Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring and Samaria). It was just beautiful to watch.
Between "Isle" and "3-iron" the latter is my favourite too. These films are so different but at the same time they are so distinctly belong to the same director.
However, because of my old age I'm unable to comment in more detail on your spoiler paragraphs since I don't remember any details ;).
Hee! My husband laughs every time we watch anything on TV. He says – I bet you have seen this already.. :D The funny part is that I sometimes (and not rarely) go through a half of a film before I recognize it. Things are complicated more by the fact that I used to love films in Russia too and title translations are as confusing as anything. :D
But of course that doesn's change the fact that it's a great achievement to make such a beautiful movie with so few shooting days.
May be sometimes you can retain a feel that you want to convey easier if you make a film in a short time span?
I can also tell you that Kim is Catholic hence the reason why he uses Christian symbols (wikipedia says there are about 26% Christians and the same amount of Buddhists in South Korea). :)
This is very interesting – and totally unexpected!
