Rome : "Deus Impeditio Esuritori Nullus"

Can I love this show more? I loved the previous episode "A necessary Fiction" and it was one of my favourites, but because there was so much of deep understanding of human in soul in "Deus Impeditio Esuritori Nullus" (read - Lucius Vorenus) I will probably end up liking it even more.

I was fascinated by Mark Antony and his relationship with Cleopatra, and so many good words for James Purefoy! It really pays off to include good actors like him or Ciaran Hinds into a TV show! When it comes to important scenes like scenes of Caesar's death or scenes depicting Mark Antony and Cleoptara's relationship, James Purefoy and Ciaran Hinds effortlessly give a new meaning to the familiar historical events.

Plus James Purefoy gives a totally new meaning to a beard and eye-liner.. :D

But of course, this episode for me will always be the one where "Lucius Vorenus was absolutely awesome". Pullo was fabulous too, but I my fannish heart is so full of Vorenus at the moment. :D

Vorenus

1. Vorenus is dreaming about Niobe. Every night.. He can make himself move and go through the usual motions of the day, but every night he sees Niobe again. (And here is where I forgive him EVERYTHING he has done or will do in the future)

And they are so lovely together that I was crying all the way through this moment:

And in his dreams she loves him. ** sniff **

2. Vorenus and little Caesarion. Who is so so pretty and spirited and wants to know who his father was. When Vorenus tells the boy about his father it is difficult to work out if he is talking about Caesar or about Pullo. And Vorenus is good and patient with the boy and speaks with him as with the grown-up person and really seems to understand and take care of this boy who seems to be so lonely in the Huge Egyptian Palace.

I feel that Vorenus is much better father-figure now, but I am so afraid for the boy. I know that historically Caesarion died, but it is wrong of me to have un-historical wishes that Vorenus will save Caesarion and hide him somewhere on a little farm far far away? And that they will live there together with Pullo?

3. Vorenus and Atia. I loved this scene! Vorenus was so clearly displaying what his thoughts on this matter are and at the same time he had a right balance of soft/hard approach to stop Atia from doing anything too silly: And Atia! How much I love her! And how much I value that Mark Antony still has some feelings for her, even being opiated to the core by Cleopatra's charms.

Vorenus Eye roll:

4. Vorenus and Posca. One of the things that really draw me into Vorenus's character is that he is so true to his word. He will stand by Mark Antony no matter waht because he gave his word.

But he will let others run away from the sinking ship:

5. Vorenus and Mark Antony. This was the best scene of this episode for me: Vorenus repeats Octavia's words that "my husband is a cowardly scum" to Mark Antony's face. And then Mark Antony asks what does Vorenus think.. And all the following exchange is fabulous:

Vorenus: "Is that an order?"

Mark Antony: "Yes, that's an order"

Vorenus: "You're no coward, but you do have a strong disease in your soul. A disease that will eat away at you until you die"

And when Mark Antony asks why is Vorenus so sure in his diagnosis, Vorenus says: "I recognize the symptoms, I have the same sickness." This makes me cry cry cry but at the same time I can't love this conversation more.

And little Caesarion was listening and you can see that he understands everything:

6. Vorenus sad and brooding. If I haven't forgiven him everything in the point 1 I would have done it here and now:

Pullo

I was so happy that he killed this snake Gaia with his own hands!! (and that he was so good at ruling Aventine). Yes, I feel I am a cruel woman. :D But is helps so much that his eyes are incredibly green here.

A Couple of little things that I didn't like

1.I think I am quite ready for Vorenus' kids to forgive their father. And I am more then ready for someone to tell them that he didn't kill their mother. I felt sympathy for the children up to this point, but I am getting quite tired with everyone repeating "he killed our mother" when he did not!! And I am quite tired of everyone being spoiled children, particular Vorena who is supposed to be some kind of nun and who could do better considering! I am waiting for Niobe's ghost to appear to them and reveal everything :D

2. Oh, Pullo! I would expect you to keep Eirene's memory a little longer and not just be all lovey-dovey with Gaia. If she didn't tell you that she was the one who killed Eirene you would have let Gaia "die in you arms" just the way Eirene did!!!

** sigh ** I had to make some icons again. Making "Rome" icons seems to be an incurable disease as [livejournal.com profile] queenofthorns said. I promise to stop soon – just one more week!

Icons are free to share, please let me know if you would like any text added.

Ok, I looked at the one with Mark Antony and his eyeliner—my god. I haven't seen the ep yet because it arrived too late. And tonight I have plans so I can't see it unless I stay up majorly late.

Is .09 Jocasta? I totally love her. She's so awesome. I remember when she was crying about marrying Posca, but I'm all, "He's totally cool! He'll worship you!"

And Atia thought she was foisting Jocasta off on someone bad. Hmpf.

She seems to do what she wants and he adores her (in his way because he is too clever to be tricked). And she was so happy to see Atia in this episode, I always think what could have happened if she knew who was behind her father's murder? Oh, she is better off not knowing.

And Posca is all sorts of great in this episode and wears an eye-liner too. :D

Heee. I love your pictorial recaps. Also, I wasn't certain I liked Antony in eyeliner at all--until that once great look he gives when Cleopatra is throwing the vases at him. That was hilarious. :D

It took me a while to get round the idea of Egyptian eye-liner too! Thanks goodness they didn't make Vorenus wear it. James Purefoy really rocks for me - Mark Antony comes very alive! I don't know if real Mark Antony was a person of brutish passions and of some crazy animal power at same time. But I am going to remember him like this. :D

I'm in complete agreement with you in regards to Vorenus. After this I forgave him everything.(well almost everything - I'm still having a few issues with him choking his daughter) It's no wonder he cannot let go - he keeps reliving the past each and every night.

And when Mark Antony asks why is Vorenus so sure in his diagnosis, Vorenus says: "I recognize the symptoms, I have the same sickness." This makes me cry cry cry but at the same time I can't love this conversation more.

Oh absolutely - and it also made me think of Marc Antony talking to the grieving Vorenus in the beginning of the series. I liked how the two scenes echo each other, while at the same time manage to give the feeling of a full circle.

And I love the icons. Especially the Jocasta ones! I would like a spin off series titled "The Adventures of Posca and Jocasta". ;)

I'm in complete agreement with you in regards to Vorenus. After this I forgave him everything.(well almost everything - I'm still having a few issues with him choking his daughter)

You see, I was looking on this from the POV of how betrayed he must have felt. I don't know – You will not think me of me too terribly if I say that I don't know how I would have reacted if my daughter betrayed me this way? I honestly don't know and I hope it will never come to it. Plus if we look at it from Vorenus POV, he didn't kill Niobe! Whatever happened on that day (and my theory on this is that he was going to kill Lucius). I am not trying to justify Vorenus, I just see his POV and why he did what he did.

Anyways, this whole misunderstanding that the children think that Vorenus killed their mother is probably one of the things I felt to be quite weak in this episode. It is almost like in Asian dramas where they have many misunderstandings/ long standing envies like this. In RL Pullo(or someone else) would have talked to kids and explained everything already.

Oh absolutely - and it also made me think of Marc Antony talking to the grieving Vorenus in the beginning of the series. I liked how the two scenes echo each other, while at the same time manage to give the feeling of a full circle.

Oh, this is awesome!
I think the relationship between Mark Antony and Vorenus really grew up on me, as well as Mark Antony did. At some moments I saw Mark Antony as some evil figure, but I really like how he came out to be a very powerful man who at the same time is ruled by his passions. The worst thing that has happened to Mark Antony was the death of Caesar. He was really loyal to him and really needed a leadership of a stronger person. I appreciate how Mark Antony's story is revealed in HBO Rome the story of a man of great strength and talent but who was not "cold" enough to hold the power

And I love the icons. Especially the Jocasta ones! I would like a spin off series titled "The Adventures of Posca and Jocasta". ;)

And isn't marring Posca such a good thing to happen to Jocasta? And she is having a baby.. :D

Oh, it was such a good episode!!! I remembered what you were saying about Vorenus last week - he seems to be becoming quite a lot calmer and he is thinking about some things that he never thought before, like in his conversation with Mark Antony he is saying things I would not imagine him saying. He is a changed man, I am not just hoping, I can see it now.

Oh, I can't wait to hear what you think.

When Vorenus tells the boy about his father it is difficult to work out if he is talking about Caesar or about Pullo.

Oh, he is TOTALLY talking about Pullo – when did he ever fight side by side with Caesar, shoulder to shoulder? (Caesar was his commander, on a horse, far away from the battle - Pullo was the man who stood beside him in battle.) And then when he talks about how Caesarion’s father loved to gamble, though he was bad at it and loved to eat and drink, Caesarion has to remind him that Caesar was notorious for his abstemiousness and Vorenus quickly remembers he’s supposed to be talking about Caesar, not Pullo.

I loved that scene (and the other one when Pullo says how Vorenus is loyal always) because it showed how much those two love each other and how much they KNOW each other. Sniff! “The bravest man I know...”

As for Pullo and Gaia, well, I wasn’t best pleased either, but although it was only a week for us, it WAS five years for the two of them. I’m sure he mourned Eirene a lot – and of course, he had never forgotten her, because he kills Gaia as soon as she tells him that SHE killed Eirene.

I loved that too. Do you think we will get our "Pullo, Vorenus and the kids including little Caesarion" happy ending? They can totally pretend that Caesarion is Pullo's long-lost sone. Or little Lucius can die of scarlet fever (you see, I am angry with the boy for pulling faces about his father :D) and they can pretend that Caesarion is Lucius? It is not like Octavian or anyone ever seen Caesarion. Posca did, but something tells me he is not going to tell..

I was very pleased when he killed her! For a moment I thought that she will get away with it! I guess I didn't like the fact that when Gaia was saying "Eirene was a good woman" he said "She had her moments". I would rather that Eirene was a love of his life and that he would have figured who Gaia was himself..

It's almost obvious that this episode was so sexy. i mean, i loved to see Mark Antony influenced by all egyptian atmospheres, particular for most of the scenes with Cleopatra. I don't like her very much, even if they were great together (James Purefoy is perfect as Antony!). I've found very nice Antonia, Octavia's daughter, but i hoped a word of something for her by Antony (i can't believe that he doesn't matter about his wife and daughter). Another thing about all characters is they looks growing, included Vorenus. I can't wait to see the season finale...i'll be very sad for Antony.

I am half-hoping she is Agrippa's daughter. I think Mark Antony was minding about his wife, his daughter and Atia. You remember that convestaion he had with Cleopatra where she wanted to kill them? I think he just went along with Cleopatra as with the more powerful personality, but also because he was afraid for their safety.

Another thing about all characters is they looks growing, included Vorenus. I can't wait to see the season finale...i'll be very sad for Antony.

Or, I am already getting sad for him!!

Thanks for tose beautiful icons again ! *Sigh*, I am gonna miss those commentaries of yours so bad !
Love this episode too. It is like they are willing to make us more sad by throwing all that good stuff just before it completely ends. OMG, I am so depressed !
Vorenus was the total hero last night. It is like he was back to what he was last season ! He is so trust-worthy, true and just. I love these of characters !
Yeah, and the episode was totally worth watching because of the scene where Jocasta gets out the palace to salute Atia and Octavia and Posca comes and takes her inside again saying: "Thank you !" to the puzzeled women. HILARIOUS ! I laughed so much my brain hurted me !
The scene where Octavian tells Pullo he is going to fight Marc Antony and wanted him to go with him, when he tells him that it is going to be like the old days, I dunno, that was somehow touching. There was some kind of sadness in that moment that really got me !
What I didn't like was, primo, Octavian sex scene ? I think I am the only one out there who didn't like it ! It was bestial and "ew-ish" ! I thought it was going to be much more...soffisticated ! I didn't like the whole Antony-cleopatra bisness. I didn't feel any connection and the sex scene wasn't that hot. LOL. They don't feel like a believable pairing when they actually are historicly !

I am too! They promised that the last episode will be a half hour longer.. :D

Vorenus was the total hero last night. It is like he was back to what he was last season ! He is so trust-worthy, true and just.

And breaks my heart!! And he bonds with little Caesarion!! I am so sorry – I am quite incoherent with Vorenus love at the moment!

Oh, Posca and Jacasta!! As [livejournal.com profile] baleanoptera said – can they make a spin-off " "The Adventures of Posca and Jocasta"? Pleeese!! They bring do much joy into these quite dramatic episodes!!

The scene where Octavian tells Pullo he is going to fight Marc Antony and wanted him to go with him, when he tells him that it is going to be like the old days, I dunno, that was somehow touching.

I loved it! I love how different Octavian is when he speaks with Pullo. Absolutely different person to what he is for everyone else.. It seems that his cold mask slips off in these moments. He really values Pullo, it seems! And it felt sad for me too, because I remember Octavian as a little boy who had not become a cold-hearted person yet.

What I didn't like was, primo, Octavian sex scene ? I think I am the only one out there who didn't like it ! It was bestial and "ew-ish" ! I thought it was going to be much more...soffisticated !

** Rolls yes ** Wasn't it just so "We are going to show as much sex as we can because we are allowed to?". I didn't like it neither!!

yay! i always look forward to your episode posts and icons :]
first off, i'll say it, for once i enjoyed watching every moment of vorenus. he was fantastic in this episode. normally, i like his character well enough for cracking jokes at his intensity, but i was genuinely thinking go vorenus! the whole way through.
oh, and the opening scene with niobe had me gushing like a school girl. i miss niobe!
as for the kids, i still pity them, but its hard to be convinced when the kids themselves aren't fantastic actors or are given rather crappy lines. yay lyde appearance!

so many things in this episode channeled my smug amusement for the film caligula which was nothing -but- decadence and debauchery.
the first scene between marc antony and cleopatra, hunting the 'stag', was one of my favorite scenes from this show to date. again, i'm not insanely huge about antony OR cleopatra but this scene was so ridiculous and cruel and revealing about the kind of state antony was in. in other words, i loved it for how sick it was XD
it wasn't all that shocking or grotesque within the context of the show, but it was fantastic. (good writing and beautiful cinematography have never hurt this show, either) the second part of this is octavian's sex scene. is it bad of me that i was disappointed there wasn't more to it besides slapping? sadly, i had envisioned octavian being the sadist, and chasing livia around the house with a wip and hot iron, but that's just me :3 either way, it was a bit simple. whish was maybe the point. and anyway, it made the 'strike me' scene from last week that much more amusing.

bad pullo! no gaia for you! is it me or did she lose any traces of her old self in this episode and become a complete sap? oh character continuity. at least before she had an eeevil agenda and ambition. i didn't like this softer gaia anymore than her old self and i was not sorry to see her go. damn though...she WAS gorgeous.

atia was too soft for me this episode too. though, everything was made okay when octavia called her on it XD i liked octavia these past few episodes. when you think about it, in the long run she's really gotten the shit end of the stick in every way imaginable. i'm only sorry they didn't show her with her daughter (who is sooooo agrippa's. look at that sandy hair.) more. in my little fantasy world i was hoping her, antonia, and atia would just go away to one of their beautiful italian villas and live out the rest of their lives in their happy little world (with occassional 'purely business' visits form agrippa) but then, i'm an immense sap sometimes :]

jocasta and posca DO need their own show. i seriously love these two and they really lighten up the mood of the show. ugh. so much love.
also, maecenas' speech for the town crier with him giggling in the background was pretty great too. i love slimey little characters like him XD

on a completely unrelated note, damn, i still miss cicero, niobe, and brutus :/

OH MY GOD THAT WAS LONG! i'm sorry! this is what you get for being the only person to make such awesome posts for each episode :]

As usual, you've analyzed everything so well that I don't have to do more than nod. And those icons are, as always, beautiful. It's probably some sort of sacrilege, but I'd love the one of Caesarion with his hand up and the text Talk to the Hand. ::makes puppydog eyes:: *g*

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2007-03-20 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
EEEEEEE! I am so glad you like! (I have already re-watch Vorenus/Antony scene about a dozen times)

I am always glad to customize the icons :

Great recap as always. :) Last night's ep made me both yearn and dread next week's episode. Rome keeps getting better and better but the end is too close...Claiming icons 5 and 6.

I am so glad you like them! I am feeling quite optimistic (at least as far as Vorenus and Pullo go)

[identity profile] wildtiger7.livejournal.com 2007-03-20 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I LOVE the look on Antony's face in that first screen cap. Priceless!

I also found the conversation you recalled here particularly wonderful. Antony asked Vorenus to tell him what exactly is wrong, and Vorenus does so. Antony wouldn't have accepted it from anyone else.

I also loved how, when Vorenus was playing with Caesarion, he was allowed to hit the boy with the ball - I could just imagine that occuring in the past, and the boy going to complain to Antony about it, and Antony totally siding with Vorenus. Heh.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2007-03-20 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Antony wouldn't have accepted it from anyone else.

Oh, this is such a good point! I like how Antony's and Vorenus relationship has developed – at one time Antony was so much "above" Vorenus that he would not have listened. Vorenus seems to reach quite a place with Antony.

lso loved how, when Vorenus was playing with Caesarion, he was allowed to hit the boy with the ball - I could just imagine that occurring in the past, and the boy going to complain to Antony about it, and Antony totally siding with Vorenus. Heh.

Oh, I love that too. I loved the boy because he didn't make any trouble about it. I think Caesarion is very lonely! The other children of Antony and Cleopatra were shown to share some time with their mother, but not him. I so hope the miracle will happen and he will be saved.

TOTALLY agree on it's about time the kids forgave Vorenus. This episode was like a five year jump from the last episode, and while I'm thrilled to see that Pullo and the kids seem to be getting along so nicely, I am disappointed he hasn't managed to change their mind on the subject of their father yet. And it particularly stung that Lil' Lucius was now holding a grudge, because of the three, he seemed to like Vorenus the most.

SO GLAD at the way Pullo handled the Gaia thing. SO GLAD. That said to me that even if he's spent the last years screwing Gaia, he never loved her, and even years away from the memory of Eirene, she is FAR more dear to him than Gaia ever could be. I CHEERED when he dumped her body. I was really afraid she was going to get some noble sweet sendoff, and it would have made me all barfy.

I didn't think for a second that Vorenus was talking about Caesar when he was telling Caesarion about his father. Not just the things he said, but the fondness in his eyes. That was all Pullo. And I'm glad you liked Caesarion too! I've read a lot of people commenting on him being a spoiled brat or whatever, but really, considering the completely messed up palace life he's got, I think he's a pretty well-adjusted kid. Obviously Vorenus' influence has been a good one on him.

You and I are of one mind on this! I guess Pullo is not a type who will be having long conversations with them. He does try, and he made the children's life as happy as he could, but..

That said to me that even if he's spent the last years screwing Gaia, he never loved her, and even years away from the memory of Eirene, she is FAR more dear to him than Gaia ever could be. Aww! And when Pullo was saying all these things to Octavian about Vorenus. How Vorenus is so loyal. Their friendship means so much to me!

Oh, "selfish brat" was a first thing I thought too, when Caesarion hit that slave with a ball. But when Vorenus hit him back and Caesarion actually suffered it I thought – "You are not as bad!! You can take as well as give!". Also I would not blame him too much considering Cleopatra killing slaves for sport. And Vorenus is so so good with Caesarion, quite patient and soft. **sniff **

Love the screencaps. Would it be okay to borrow one or two for me to play with and icon?

I am so glad you like them!! I will be quite bereft without my "Rome" Mondays, and I don't even have another show that I REALLY REALLY like at the moment. but I am glad they are finishing "Rome" on such a great note!!!

[identity profile] dontelltheelf.livejournal.com 2007-03-20 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
What, no Pullo icons? *sniffle* :P j/k Excellent work, btw, with the running commentary and screenshots. Absolutely beautiful!

Oh.My.God. James Purefoy could be wearing Bjork's swan dress and I'd still be drooling, let alone eyeliner. (I'll be taking #6, btw.)

And I felt the same way, was Vorenus talking about Caesar or Pullo, and will he sneak Caesarion away? Maybe Vorenus will tell them he killed the boy, but hide him away somewhere. And Pullo! Heartbreak! Stupid whore, Gaia. It was pretty disturbing seeing her all sugar and saccharine with him too.

For the first time, I think Simon Woods actually looked like a human... which is odd, but oh well. Maybe he finally fit his face or they did something with his hair. And it was lovely to see him all naked, just so long as I didn't have to look at his face. Hee.

I'm really going to miss this show :(

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2007-03-21 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
EEE! I am so glad you like!

Oh.My.God. James Purefoy could be wearing Bjork's swan dress

he did wear something short and slinky in one scene, didn't he?

Maybe Vorenus will tell them he killed the boy, but hide him away somewhere

It really seems that the boy is getting bonded with Vorenus so much. And if they do that, there is always a chance of come-back and more adventure for Pullo and Vorenus.

It was pretty disturbing seeing her all sugar and saccharine with him too.

This was strange for me because it seemed as if they changed her character a little bit.

For the first time, I think Simon Woods actually looked like a human...

He seems to be different when he speaks with Pullo, as if the old memories they shared make him a little boy again.

And it was lovely to see him all naked, just so long as I didn't have to look at his face. Hee.

he does have a very nice body, doesn't he? I like his face too :D, but I agree that Octavian is quite disturbing to watch sometimes. Which is in a way a good thing, Simon Woods doing such a god job of being a dictator.

[identity profile] tacitanumeria.livejournal.com 2007-03-20 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Very angry with Pullo for sleeping with that slutface Gaia.

But also very proud that he choked a bitch.
Someone needs to make an icon of that. Like "Does Pullo have to choke a bitch?"
I'd laugh.

Lovely icons. I snagged 1, 3, 4, 7, 13 and 14. Quite a lot considering we have so little time left. And lovely picspam. I had a few issues with the episode. So I'll have to watch it again to determine how I really feel about it.

Re: Lovely

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2007-03-21 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I am very interested to know what your issues are..

I know some don't like Antony/Cleopatra (I did like them together for sheer craziness of it) and some abhor Octavian's sex scene (which is quite "What?")..

[identity profile] starwriterlv.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Can I just say your commentary has been very asstute and on the mark! I have enjoyed it very much and this was no exception!

This was be far one of my favorite episodes.

If its not too much and its not too late...(may I please have #5 say Ill fated love & #6 say Sexy Roman Musings

Thank you so much.

Will you be able to watch the Tudors on showtime?

Oh, I haven't seen the latest episode yet. I am very optimistic, but still.. I think this is the end of "Rome", they are not going to have season3.

Will you be able to watch the Tudors on showtime

I should be able to find a way to watch them. :D

^ LOL! His expression! XD!

I had to mute the part where Pullo throttles Gaia! Argh. Of course I'm glad she got her comeuppance, though. :D Although it is kind of lame how if that crazy man hadn't escaped, then ultimately she wouldn't have confessed unless in a similar situation on her deathbed. That is, if she had died suddenly then she wouldn't have had the chance to confess, and therefore would still have had to face Nemesis. :/

I agree. I was disappointed by this storyline. I agree with what you said, but I also was not entirely happy with the fact that if she didn't confess Pullo would have buried her like Eirene, with a great love. It was only a coincidence which made her die in his hands and therefore, confess…
