Help!!!!!!!!!
Everything went terribly wrong and after receiving "LJ layer error" whilst commenting in somebody else's LJ I lost my header.
- I am trying to go into "Edit Journal style", "Advanced", "Your layers"
- Then I am trying to create a new layer with type: "Theme"
- Then I edit it and press "Save and Compile" and it compiles fine
- Nothing happens, though my image file for the header appears to be healthy. WHY??????????
I had a source code for customisation saved
Am I forgetting to do something???
Everything is lost?
I should be creating a new LJ because my header will never come back??
Update: Thank you so much, fabulous
winterspel, it is all sorted out. EEEEEEE! Thank you!

If your code for your layer is the same as it was before, then it's not the code that is the problem, it's something else. When I had my problems with my layout, there wasn't any problem with my code, it was rather in what had been selected - LJ had somehow selected something different for me, and I had to delete something that had just appeared in there and taken over all my settings (which is just weird, because I definitely did not put it there).
I'm so sorry. I hope it gets fixed!

Do you mean if I nave chosen "Flexible Squares" out of the Layout: drop-down list? I did this. Do I have to do anything apart from compiling a new layer?

Then there is a box for language.
Third, there is a box for "Theme" - here, you need to activate the dropdown menu and scroll to the bottom under "Custom layers" and hopefully that is where you will find your layer that you created. Mine is called "Additional Customizations" so that is what I see in the menu. Once I select that, it activates my theme layer that I created. Otherwise your theme layer is there, but dormant.

I am still a little curious about what happened to your layout - Did some code appear in you layout source which wasn't written by you?
Just to let you know - I watched "Tatta Hitotsu no Koi ep01". It is good, I am definitely going to watch more!!!

In my case it was truly bizarre. My theme layer was selected, but it still wasn't working. In the Advanced tab-->Your Layers, under my theme layer that I made called "additional customizations" there was another layer, a user layer that was called "auto-generated Customizations." I certainly didn't make it, and I couldn't make it go away until I deleted it. When I did that, I lost all my non-code modifications that I had made in the "customs options" tab, although all my coded customizations came back. It was a huge headache.
So my original code was intact and still there, but a new layer had appeared which had hijacked my layout. Does that make sense?

You see, after I lost the header, I went into the customization layers and I saw two layers: one for "user" which had all my colours in the sourse code and one for "theme" with the code fro the header. because I didn't remember to check in "Look and feel" tab I was puzzled.
SO I tried to go to the original state and deleted the "theme" layer and re-created it. That didn't help.
Then I deleted "user" layer" just in case. This didn't help too and I lost the colours at this point.
I had the colours saved, so I went and re-stored them. At this point I noticed that "auto-generated Customizations" layer was created. So it seems to me that this layer is created every time one makes any changes in the non-code modifications. And it must have been created by some error in you case.
Hmm. And all this loosing of layout - I actually lost the whole layout at first is very discouraging.
