Yes, I do believe that the author might have not hard of the BR novel and film when she started writing, but I would expect similarities to be discovered by her agent/editor/publisher/friend/whatever, so I don't believe the statement Collins keeps making I "had never heard of that book until [her] book was turned in" can be true, and this does spoil the enjoyment a little for me. I should not care what the authors do/say, but I somehow do.
The film can go either way, but I agree - I don't think Hollywood style suits the story in general, and I personally would not be able to forget that they cast Katniss (who is clearly Hispanic or Native American from the book description - olive skin, dark eyes, dark hair) as white
