A drama recommendation request

I have become so obsessed with "Game of Thrones" that I must admit it to myself and seek treatment, preferably in the form of some other obsession inducing material like Asian drama. Preferrably with a heart-wrenching romance and possibly with some other plot too, and by heart-wrenching I mean angsty but with a good ending. I have enough tragedies pending in Game of Thrones, so I am not ready for 49 days. It will also help if the drama is at least half-way through because I want to marathon.

It does not matter if the drama is Korean, Taiwanese or Japanese.

Thorn Birds

BTW, I have finished "Thorn Birds" this week which were just the thing and not bad at all (I wished for a little bit more romance between the main couple, though). May be I will have a chance to post about it one of those days, but for now my ratings are 6/10.

Do you have any dramas with heart-wrenching love to recommend? ** puppy eyes **

Heeee! I saw you joined ONTD-ASOIAF and all the rest :D You are so awesome, my darling, and I love (and share) your obsession!

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2011-06-03 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I have managed to find the way into that one, thank you to some fabulous people I met along the way. :D When I get this obsessed I have a most desperate urge to talk to someone about my obsession, hence the abundance of posts . The last time this happened, it was with Korean period drama "Slave Hunters" (which is awesome on several levels) and I even went as far as posting in forums (which I almost never do as I don't particular like the format of forums).

I even started reading the books, from the middle of the book 1 (which I know you would not approve of, but I wanted to skip the introductions).

Man, I wanted to watch TB for the male leads (what? I'm shallow!) but there are too many dramas I'm watching atm so I can't add that one to my schedule.

btw, I'm watching only romcoms so, er, I don't think that's what you were asking. Weren't you? I have started Can you hear my heart and I've been told it turns angsty in the end. So far it's good.

My current obsessions? Lie to me (INSANE chemistry between the leads), Drunken to love you (TW drama. Romcom. About adults who try to act like adults. Also? The hero watches out for the heroine in a non patronizing way. It's cute and nicely acted. So impressed with it cos tw dramas are too oot for me) and 49 days (alsdkjlaskjd laksdjlajsda!!). I'll tell if you Best love makes the list later: I have to watch 2 more eps tonight. And this whole section is useless to you. Sorry

The male leads are delectable in TB, and I adore Han Hye Jin to the point of girl-crush.

There another comment reccing "Drunken to love you", I am going to start with this one.

I am not in a mood for a 100% rom-com . And "Can you hear my heart" crosses me in a shallow way: the girl has a weird haircut and the guy has panda eyes. I can't see myself attracted to him AT ALL.

I finished Spring Waltz for So

I do love it. I hope it's the same for you too. It is a romcom, though.

I forgot to tell you that...well, remember the chemistry between the 2 geuns in Marry me, Mary? Kang Ji-hwan and YEH have the same kind of chemistry in LTM, only it's better and aslkdjklasdj omg!

I checked "Drunken to love you" - this looks like 100% my thing, but it only has 6 episodes up to date, I am going to get back to it later. Same with Lie Tp Me - it only started recently.

I am going to go with "New tales of Gisaeng", this looks like my thing as well.

Drunken to Love You is really good! So is Can You Hear My Heart. Both are pretty romantic and I really like them.

I missed a lot of eps in the later part of Thorn Birds because I was so frustrated with the female lead. I uncanoned shipped on that one. I wanted her to end up with the director instead. I hope you post your thoughts on the drama sometime. I don't think a lot of people on LJ followed Thorn Birds so it would be nice to read someone elses take on the drama.

I am going to go with your and blueocean's recs and start "Drunken to love you".

I AM WITH YOU. I thought the main guy took Jung Eun for granted, and did so for many years. I would have also preferred her with the director guy (who also was gorgeous). And I HATED, positively hated the secondary girl, with a passsion. I wanted her dead, :D

[identity profile] att123.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 10:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yay! It kind of remiends me of the oldschool TW Dramas before they got too crazy.

I mean they lived together for SIX years and nothing changed. I loved the director. He was so in love with her! I stopped watching it because she kept getting away with everything and treated people like dirt.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I felt the same as you did. TB went the classical route of Family Dramas where everything and everyone was forgiven, but sometimes I wish they weren't. The lead guy redeemed himself at the end, thuogh.

I'm here once again to recommend My Girlfriend is a Gumiho. It's an amazing heart-warming and by the end heart-wrenching romance. Also it features one of the cutest and most awesome heroines of all the kdramas I've seen.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2011-06-03 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I am keeping this in mind, when I am in a mood for a rom com.

I second this like whoa!

And I keep saying MGIAG > Secret Garden

*runs and hides*

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I will definitely watch it when I have a mood for rom-com. Now, I am in a mood for something heavier.
intermezzo: (Default)

[personal profile] intermezzo 2011-06-04 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
MGIAG is quite angsty in the end. Just so you know.

[identity profile] timescout.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! about your comment on CYHMH's leads. Stills just don't make justice for them, you'll actually have to see them in action. It really is a pretty good drama with enough heart-wrenching love to fit the bill.

Though, my favourite atm is Gisaeng. That OTP is making it to my all time favourites. They are so compatible and sane. Not that they didn't manage to mess up things enough at a point to give me palpitations. But they actually talk, have meaningful conversations and solve their problems! I really do adore them.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 10:55 am (UTC)(link)
You see, I must be the shallowest person in the world because when I find something jarring in the lead(s ) apperances I know I would never enjoy the story the same way. I don't really go for 100% beautiful guys only (BTW. I checked "Stranger than Paradise" which was good but had the female lead that I hated), but if I find something in actor's apperance ridiculous - I know from experience that I never change my opinion. ;(.

Ginsaeng aactually looks reallY REALLY good. i am going to try this one, and "Royal Family". I checked "Drunken to love you" yesterday and it only has 6 episodes subbed, I am leaving this one for later. I might finish Midas as well.

[identity profile] timescout.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 11:14 am (UTC)(link)
That's a pity as you miss out on good stuff. Oh well, in Giseang at least no-one can call the leads ugly. ;P Well, the other's aren't that bad either. I hope you like it, I'd hate to pimp you antoher one you end up not liking. :(

Re. StP - how far did you get? The female lead is kinda annoying to start with but she does change, eventually. Or is it just residue from TB, seeing it's the same actress playing a character you hated in that one too.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's both. I watched about 4 episodes on SP and as you would expect, I really adored UTW's character, but was so-so about the male lead. And the girl? I ahve seen her somewhere else where she also got on my nerves. :D And after that I marathoned TB and now my hate for her is sealed. :D

Haha, I don't mean to be pushy after reading your comments re:CYHMH but for what it’s worth I think it would be fitting for what you’re asking. I don’t notice the hair anymore and if Kim Jae Won isn’t your thing - the second lead looks like THIS (http://pics.livejournal.com/lightsjustright/pic/0004984y/) and his woobie love for his step-sister is pretty heartbreaking.

It’s from the same writer as Tree of Heaven which I just started as well because I wanted to see the alternate pairing happen. XD

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
I actually adore the way the second lead in CYHMH looks, but isn't he in love with the main girl (so he never going to be with her at the end?). ** sigh **

[identity profile] lightsjustright.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's true. But you asked for heart-wrenching! :p They have so many shippy scenes (of tragedy AND cute) it's definitely gonna break my heart when that pairing dies, LOL.

My humble recommendation is Best Love, or The Greatest Love. It's a rom-com, and I know some folks describe the male lead as an unrelatable, immature cartoon character, but he is most definitely more than that. He is arrogant and high-handed, but he has his own sense of fairness and justice. Those he loves are few and far in between, but he loves so deeply. And he can be hurt - easier than one would think. And Cha Seung-won is such a sexy smoldering beast, who couldn't love him? When I watch him I am just hit by his raw, virile intensity.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2011-06-05 10:05 am (UTC)(link)
I am going to watch Best Love as soon as it finishes. As you say, Cha Seung-won and who said Hong Sisters do not do a good rom com? I love every single one of their dramas.
