I've read them all, but at the moment I'm rereading CoK. If I get something wrong, it's probably because my memory of the following books is somewhat foggy. There's so many details...
Never trust Littlefinger, yes. ;) But if Ned was willing to take the throne and cooperate with (or rather depend on) Littlefinger, I think he'd benefit more from that. Though I don't doubt he wouldn't hesitate to sacrifice Ned, if need be. Still, he had most certainly guessed Ned's answer before he asked, but he is one to plan for all eventualities.
The dagger business -is- fishy though. Might be it was only a way to win Ned and Cat's trust, though, knowing GRRM, there could be more to it than that.
