Films I am excited about: The Three Musketeers

OMPH! I have been alerted by always knowledgeable [livejournal.com profile] trailer_spot : The Three Musketeers are coming! In 3D!! With Ray Stevenson as Portos , Matthew Macfadyen as Atos and Luke Evans as Aramis! and Milla Jovovich as Milady!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and Mads Mikkelsen as Rochefort! For some strange and hard to fathom reason Dumas' books are not as popular in the UK as they are in Russia, but I must say that for me personally he is the number 1 as far as historical literature ( with some free interpretation of history ) is concerned. And The Three Musketeers trilogy is his best, I red and re-red these books so many times as a child. Hopefully there will be new editions of the English translation soon (this usually happens when new film adaptations are released) so that I can push it to my daughter - 12 years was the first time I read the books myself.

The trailer:

PS: this adaptation's D'Artagnan is a cutie.

Huh. That looks awesome!

When I was a kid, I watched the Disney adaptation with Kiefer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen (heh. LOL), Chris O'Donnell...and who was in that movie? Oh yes, Oliver Platt and Tim Curry and I loved it even if it was ridiculous. This one? Looks great. Also? Matthew Macfadyen! Luke Evans! OMG! \o/\o/\o/\o/\o/\o/\o/

Haha, look at Orli Bloom. His pointy moustache cracks me up!

YAY!

Orlando lays the Duke of Buckingham, I like this casting choice.

hee! I disagree on both account:

I am not sure yet about Logan Lerman as D'Artagnan because I haven't seen him anywhere, but I am really glad that this adaptation is finally getting the ages right. This is something that always bothered me in any previous adaptations:

- at the beginning of the books D'Artagnan is 17
- both Atos and Portos are heavily thirty-something (so yes, they both are D'Artagnan's father's age)
- Aramis is younger than Atos and Portos.

As to the fact that the movie looks very heavy on action - I like this too, this corresponds with the feeling I get from the books too.

Thank you! I was wrong (to some point, D'Artagnan is 18 which is close) Anyways, I like the cast , they all my favourite actors.

They made both Ray Stevenson and Matthew Macfadyen to look older than they really are, which must have been intentinal.

Some people below comment that Logan lerman is a really good actor. :D

Ray Stevenson as Porthos is enough to sell me on this! He looks amazing! I remember an ancient version with Michael York as D'Artagnan and Oliver Reed as Athos and Faye Dunaway as Milady! Eeee! I will certainly have to find some way to see this.

By the look of it, the film will be released on October 14, 2011.

I am so glad Portos is getting a good casting - I always felt that usually adaptations portray him to be too fat to be a good fighter. :P

That looks really good!

I'll doubt I'll see if in the cinema, though, since it's 3-D. Don't really like 3-D movies - and putting glasses over glasses is uncomfortable.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2011-03-29 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I also prefer non-3D. But don't they usually show a 2D version alongside with 3D? They quite often do it here.

[identity profile] shadowserenity.livejournal.com 2011-03-29 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought so, too, but then I went to my local cinema for a screening of Tron: Legacy and they only had it in 3-D. Ridiculous!

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2011-03-29 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Boooooooo! Hopefully one of our local cinemas (we have several :D) will show 2D. because my eyes are not as good I find that 3D makes my head hurt.

Also, Logan Lerman (D'Artagnan) can ACT. I was drooling over the 17-year-old in Gamer. Tons of charisma and depth. Even when he played a rich bratty kid in Gamer.

Also, have you seen The Man in the Iron Mask (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120744/) with Leonardo DiCaprio? I thought it was awesome. I never saw Titanic and was seriously turned off by the teeny-bopper rage over Leo, but Iron Mask gave him a second chance with me. (First saw him in The Quick and the Dead, which I loved, and fifteen years later we know what kind of range he has.)

Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich, Gerard DePardieu, and Gabriel Byrne. Cannot find a better set of older actors for the four of them.

(and, sorry for all the edits and deletes. been a long time since I was on lj, haha)

YAY! I am really glad - I was a little worried for D'Artagnan.

yes, i have seen that adaptation, it was a really good one. I don't remember any adaptations of "Three musketeers" that I really like, apart from the Russian mini-series (but this is not very well known outside Russia).

I love Dumas too, but unlike you I really dislike the look of this movie. Steampunk can be really cool if done right, but IMO, this is a completely wrong era for it. Kung fu moves in crinoline dresses just look ridiculous to me, sorry. :P

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2011-03-29 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
darkeyedwolf summarized my feelings perfectly below : all I can think is "more musketeer adaptations! pleaase!!". I also LOVE at least 75% of the cast (and the rest, like Luke Evans, look pretty good too). :D

[identity profile] darkeyedwolf.livejournal.com 2011-03-29 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
WOOO! I'm so excited for this movie! The Three Musketeers was my favorite book for a long, long time. (Everyone else I know is all "OMG THE MOVIE LOOKS SO STUPID IT'S RUINING THE ORIGINAL BLAH BLAH" but all I can think is "YAY, MORE MUSKETEER ADAPTATIONS!")

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2011-03-29 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! Exactly my feelings! More adaptations! With my favourite actors too! I must say, Milla Jovovich is one the actresses I think are PERFECT for the role of Milady (she is going to fight with a sword whilst wearing a dress- what else do I need???).

[identity profile] lydzi.livejournal.com 2011-03-29 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH OMG THE ACTORS!! I'm so buying this! And was it a boat? Floating above a castle? oh well. Milady looks wicked cool XD. And I like Percy Jackson. Usually I'm not keen on teen actors but he's one of the few who don't make me want to strugle him so it's cool ^^.

MATTEW MCFAYDEN KLHGKJDFGUDSFLSDJL!!!!!!!!!!

Excuse me, excuse my monkey :p. Fangirl moment ;).

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2011-03-29 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so glad that the young actor seems to be good. Much of the story hangs on D'Artagnan's irascible character.

MATTEW MCFAYDEN KLHGKJDFGUDSFLSDJL!!!!!!!!!!

he delivered that line at the end of the trailer exceptionally well.

This looks like a lot of fun! The Three Musketeers has so many good adaptations! Which makes me more mystified than ever about how all the adaptation of The Count of Monte Christo seem fail so badly :/.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2011-03-29 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I think "Count.." is a longer story which doesn't translate as well into a single film as "three Musketeers" does, it is only suitable for TV series IMHO. I quite liked the one with Gérard Depardieu , though.
