V for Vendetta

I went to see my Project supervisor today, but she was ill . As a replacement I got tempted into seeing "V for Vendetta". I am so sorry [livejournal.com profile] elspethsheir, but for me this film was good but not exceptional.

- It was a cross between 1984 (but without overwhelming sense of reality) and "The Phantom of the Opera" (but without Gearard Butler's sex appeal ;)

- It didn't hold any original ideas for me: Future Inquisition-like government was done before. And masks.

- I am not sure about this one because I don't know history very well and it also could be that I understood everything too literally: It appeared that in "V for Vendetta" Guy Fawkes (gunpowder plot) was mentioned as a fighter for freedom. Wasn't he the guy who wanted to blow up the Houses of Parlament WITH the Parlament inside?

+ I liked very very much both Stephen Fry and Stephen Rea. I must check some of the other roles of these actors..

+ I liked the way how the idea of wearing mask and what does it mean to wear a mask was developed in the film

+ It was very well-made visually film

And now I am a bad, bad student and instead of doing some more writing I have downloaded the new episode of "Prison Break". And I am going to watch it because I am dying to know what happened to Michael and Sara.

Yep, and I said to myself that I am not going to use LJ this week because I need to finish Report-writing, but - who am I kidding? But I must, must do some Report writing.. ;) So I may do some writing, and then watch some "Prison Break"

I want to see V for Vendetta, but I'm not sure when it gets released here :S

Love Stephen Fry and Stephen Rea, especially Stephen Fry. You should check him in A Bit of Fry and Laurie or Jeeves and Wooster (both with Hugh Laurie), or Peter's Friends (I haven't seen it but a friend of mine keeps telling me that if I like Stephen Fry I have to watch this movie!, also Wilde... I particularly like him in Gosford Park and Relative Values... and if you get the chance, listen to him reading Harry Potter books, simply amazing!!!

;)

I remember Stephen Fry in Gosford Park now, he was great . And of course, Jeeves and Wooster ! ( I haven't seen much of Jeeves and Wooster, just bits here and there, but I like it)

I think you will like V for Vendetta if you like Stephen Fry as he has a really good role there and does a marvelous job - funny and touching and sad and everything.. And because you are a London girl ;) you can like that film is set in London (though I don't now if it was filmed in London) .

Also [livejournal.com profile] elspethsheir liked V fo Vendetta very much, so it could be just me ;)

I must confess now that I completed a meme about cities and that I have got London too. I am in the same country!!! Yay! I was meant to live here.. ;)

I skimmed your review 'cause I haven't seen the film yet and don't want to be spoiled. the graphic novel is very good, but its true its not exactly original. I suspect the book is better than the movie.

Rea and Fry are two of my favorite actors. definetly check them out in other roles

I was a bit disappointed in last night's Prison Break. YMMV, so let me no what you think when you watch it.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2006-03-21 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for mentioning, I have hidden possible spoilers behind lj-cut now!

but its true its not exactly original. I suspect the book is better than the movie.

Some very good people I know liked the movie very much , so it could be just me. I probably was watching too much of "The Wire" recently. And now I am in realistic mind-set, that could be it . ;)

I just finished watching "Prison Break".I feel that I would like the story to move along a little, they seem to be stuck in the same 2 days for a long time now. Also because there is no way Lincoln is going to be executed I could not really concentrate on his feelings, but was rather thinking about how they are going to stop execution.

Anyway, I just watch it for Michael and Sara, and also "Prison Break" is entertaining in places.

[identity profile] arathesane.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, since I know that Lincoln isn't going to be executed, the ending, though well-done doesn't hold any real suspense. I started watching the show for Wentworth Miller(hey sometimes I'm shallow) and its my total guilty pleasure show. I think last night's needed some scenes with the bastard Agent Kellerman, but he's on next week and so is Michelle Forbes and I adore her. I think next week's will be better.

so much of what happens is absurd and unrealistic but there is lot about it I like. I love the actors(with the exception of Robin Tunney who I have always liked before this role, she just doesn't seem to fit to me), like the way it is shot and especially like the art direction.

and I'm a Sara/Michael fan as well!

and The Wire will ruin you for life. no one I know(IRL) watches it and I don'thave the DVDs, so it hard to convey how the great the show is to them. it is so good, its one of the few tv shows that I think is actually a work of art.

I started watching the show for Wentworth Miller(hey sometimes I'm shallow) and its my total guilty pleasure show. I have started watching it when it was released on Channel 5 in UK (we are still way behind US schedule), but I was completely hooked after the riot episode and rescuing. CREATIVE GENIOUS! ** sighs **

Michelle Forbes is really good, though BSG was the first time I have seen her.. I agree about Robin Tunney, I think, I can’t quite feel her chemistry with Lincoln and this confuses me..

Exactly! Before “The Wire” I used to think when something was not quite right in one show or another – O, well, this is just a TV show, THEY ALL DO IT! But now for me there is one show which doesn’t follow all the pitfalls of the others..

I am really lucky because "The Wire" DVD’s are quite cheap in UK, so after [livejournal.com profile] queenofthorns was so very enthusiastic about it I have bought season 1 and 2. And my husband LOVED it. This was another good sign for me because he is very much no-nonsense about things..

I just looked at my first post and can't believe that I wrote "no" instead of "know"

it must be that I only got 4.5 hours or sleep last night.

Hee! I always do it.. ;)

I was thinking about seeing "V for Vendetta", but I think I'll just wait till it comes out on DVD. I need to see something more up beat. I saw "The Libertine" today and did not like it at all. Which is rare for me to totally hate a movie. Although I do want to see the new movie with Clive Owen.

I just can't figure out how "The Libertine" got released to theatres and movies like "Dear Frankie" and "Beowulf" can't seem to get wide releases. Must be the Johnny Depp draw.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen "Libertine". I wanted to before, but I think I will not now because I only heard cool reviews..

I can't wait for "Beowulf"'s release, they promise it in October.. And I so much agree about "Dear Frankie" - it was one of the loveliest films I have seen recently. It was on the general release in UK, though not for long. I went to see it 4 times in 10 days. I am crazy.. It was before the Project of Doom.

That film with Clive Owen has drawn my attention too ;)

I love Stephen Rea. I first saw him in The Crying Game, one of my favorite movies, but he's been consistently good in everything else I've ever seen him in, including on Broadway in Someone To Watch over Me. And Prison Break is totally unbelievable but also totally wonderful. I'm working hard to stay unspoiled, because I love being surprised by the twists, even the truly crazy ones.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"The Crying Game" looks really interesting, thank you for the rec!

** jealous with white jealousy that you have seen "Someone To Watch over Me" **

I feel really happy for some reason that you like "Prison Break" ;) Yes, twists in BUCKETS!

Oh, I'm sorry that you didn't enjoy all of it! In seeing it again last night, I still found a lot of value in it, and want to read the graphic novel; apparently, the source material is a lot more... complicated! I was more impressed with Hugo Weaving's performance this time, because being nuanced with a mask is no easy feat.

Guy Fawkes was indeed planning to blow up King James and the House of Parliament, with a bid to raising a new monarchy more sympathetic to Catholics. (King James had promised to be tolerant of Catholics when he succeeded Elizabeth; there was initial celebration by Catholics, who had been subject to harsh penalties, including death. But James re-introduced the harsh penalties and the conspiracy was set in motion.)

Both Stephen Fry and Stephen Rea are fabulous. Fry is also an author of some note; I adore him as Jeeves too! (And Stephen Rea is an amazing actor.)

Oh, I'm sorry that you didn't enjoy all of it! O, it could be just me , I was watching many of “The Wire” episodes recently and it probably had my mind set on reality.. I still can’t get over how good “The Wire” is..

I was more impressed with Hugo Weaving's performance this time, because being nuanced with a mask is no easy feat.

I thought the same, he did a marvelous job! And I liked the way they never disclosed his real face, never shown him without the mask..
You know, I really didn’t understand why V had to torture Evey. You see, what I think – I want my daughter to grow and be free inside, but I don’t ever want to subject her to these types of methods and don’t believe that it can work. You can set person’s mind free by other methods; reading is a good one for me. (Sorry, I forever take everything personally ;)

[identity profile] elspethsheir.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I really didn’t understand why V had to torture Evey.

I agree. I think that this was an instance where I enjoyed the film in spite of that particular event, not because of it. (When she confronts V about it, it reminded me a bit of James Frey's argument that just because his words weren't true didn't mean that what people felt from reading his 'memoir' was false - as when V told her that what she felt in the cells was true even if the set-up was fake. But it's not that easy, because it's such a huge betrayal!)

I am all for people reading more. Hee!

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they tried to show that V had damaged soul..

I liked the parallel with the "The Count of Monte Cristo" and V. That thing Evey said about Monte Cristo I always felt myself - I was always very sad that Monte Cristo didn't really love Mercedès because he loved his vengeance more. And that in a way Mercedès was more faithful to him then he was. She only married Fernand after she was told that Dantes died. But he loved his vengeance and that young girl later, and it is always was very sad for me.. (Sorry for digression)
