Although I love Korean and Japanese dramas, many sides of Asian entertainment industries , for me, as an Asian/Western non-Korean seem to be absolutely horrible, unfair, and hair-rise inducing. And I don't mean just the Network Companies themselves. Many comments/outcries by Korean fans often leave me speechless (yes, I am referring to "Chuno" nudity/kissing/etc. debacle and some others too). It seems that the general concept in Korea, as well as in Japan, is that the actors are some kind of puppets that don't have much to say about their own rights and are not entitled to any respect.
I was reminded about one of the most-horrible cases by
dangermousie. The story goes like this: One of the actors, Park Shin Yang agrees to make a drama, "Money's Warfare" (great drama, BTW). The drama is unexpectedly huge hit, ratings are well in 35% range, the network company decides to make 4 extended episodes. They agree to pay Park Shin Yang extra amount of money for these 4 episodes. But what do you think? When the drama is over, they refuse to pay the extra. And when Park Shin Yang takes them to court, they rally up all the other network companies and get Park Shin Yang banned from taking any parts in any dramas, indefinitely, explaining it by simple reason that "Korean entertainment companies are very very poor, so poor! What would happen to poor them if all the actors start taking them to courts for the things they were promised?" . He wins the lawsuit, but he is not getting any jobs so far. I mean - where are the human rights in what is supposed to be a democratic republic of Korea?????????
There are some positive news, though, here : http://kr.news.yahoo.com/service/news/shellview.htm?articleid=20100416085817102c3&linkid=4&newssetid=1352. It is hard to make the full sense from the Google translator, but it seems that Park Shin Yang is going (may be? is proposed to?) to take part in "Korea War 60th Anniversary Special K1TV". These are fantastic news (if they are not just in "proposed to" category), may be he will be allowed to take parts in dramas again, after this?????
