I was alrted to this by
linfer. This is from IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0983193/news#ni0601226) :
Following his work on Tintin, director Steven Spielberg is expected to work alongside Will Smith on an English-language remake of the 2003 Korean film Oldboy.
Variety reports that DreamWorks is securing the film rights for Spielberg and the film would be among the first under its new distribution deal with Universal Studios.
The trade says the original film tells of "a man gets kidnapped and held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. Suddenly, he's released and given money, a cell phone and clothes and is set on a path to discover who destroyed his life so he can take revenge."
Spielberg is said to be seeking a writer while the rights are being obtained.
OH MY POOR HEART!!!! This sounds so exceptionally crazy for so many reasons so I hope this will not come true :
- Spielberg, the king of Hollywood sentimentality and cheesiness will re-make a film of violence-is-so-stylish Park Chan-Wook ("Joint Security Area", "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance", "Lady vengeance") ?
- Together with Will Smith! I hope he is not going to cast him in the main role! I like Will Smith but he is so far from the definition of stylish too!
- What are they going to do to my favourite scene from "Oldboy" of eating a (small) octopus alive?
- And what are they going to do with the "Oldboy"'s themes of incest????????
- And does Hollywood have any original ideas left? I hope producing a re-make of an Asian film will do as much good for Spielberg as the re-make of "Infernal Affairs" did for Scorsese.
