This is a new film from Kim Ji Woon. His most excellent psychological mystery A tale of two sisters is one of the splendid mind-bending Asian horror films that seem to be bound to have re-makes made by Hollywood. And here is a new territory for the director. A western! Set in Manchuria! Depicting Russian (as well as Chinese and JApanese) bandits!! Hurray!
But mainly, of course, this is so brilliant because the film is a homage to MY FAVOURITE FILM OF ALL TIMES , Buono, il brutto, il cattivo., Il. The film is supposed to open a totally new dimension in the action film visuals. It has been a huge hit in Korea and is apparently bought to be shown in the West. This is splendid - I may be able to see it on a big screen.
And as the icing on a cake comes the film's cast (and may be the cast is the main reason for the film's success in Korea):
The Good: Jung Woo Sung ("Musa the warrior") . I haven't seen "Musa" but I have heard some good things about it.
The Bad: Lee Byung Hun ("Joint Security Area"). Squeee!
The Weird: Song Kang Ho ("Sympathy for Mr.Vengeance", "The Host")

( Some Promotional Pictures )
