I have started watching the first season of “Medium” (series about the female seer helping Phoenix police department). I found it very absorbing from the first episode.

The main character, Alison is standing out among typical female characters I have been seeing recently. . For a start, she is married and happily married. She a mother of three children and is happy to be a mother. Though she has an interesting face, Alison is not magazine-cover beautiful. Plus she dares to have a normal figure and be 30-something years old. And on top of all this she can see the dead and converse with them. She is articulate in a lovely way and can stand up for herself without being even slightly bitchy. I really really really like her.

To break even more of the clichés, Alison is just “normal”, She doesn’t seem to be bothered about her weight, she dresses quite matronly but not to the usual exaggerated point.

And normal is her relationship with her husband. They have ARGUMENTS and they never speak to each other in the strange sugary way which is often adopted in the media. May be it is just me, but Alison’s relationship with her husband stands out as very interesting, and very cute too. I find that I am as much engrossed by their half-laughing “battles of words” and loving fights over the various familiar things as I usually am by the angst and longing of my favourite “doomed love” pairings.

** Digression **
There are certain types of spousal relationships in some Hollywood films which I find to be very very remote from the truth. These are the relationships when wives/husbands are forever holding hands, never argue and seem to spend their days in buying each other Christmas presents. I don’t know, but I always feel that the family relationships are more then that. They include petty complains, unwashed dishes and sometimes even hurting each other. ** end of digression **

Of course, there are weak sides in everything. In “Medium” I find the nature of the crimes to be too over the top. Ok, in three episodes in a row we had a guy who raped a six-year boy, a man who was raping corpses and a photographer who was murdering young married couples for the sake of psychological experiment.
