3 Films and doctor House season 2

All system were down this extended weekend at work due to the major Student system upgrade, so I could not use VPN and connect to work to do my project. I watched some films instead:

Chinese Odyssey This film is so full of laughter, “feel good” and wonderful Faye Wong. It can make any rainy day brighter! Totally lovely fairytale! Thank you [livejournal.com profile] ginger001 and [livejournal.com profile] koalathebear for recommendations!

Three colours: Red [livejournal.com profile] queenofthorns and [livejournal.com profile] winterspel were talking about this Krzysztof Kieslowski’s film and it made me to crave to re-watch it (for about 10th time probably ;). I truly think this is one of the best films ever made. This is the last part of three films made in France and Polland and united by three ideas of French revolution and three colours of the French flag – Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. Young model valentine befriends old judge and their life is changed forever as the result. Music in the film is ABSOLUTELY DIVINE, by Polish composer Zbigniew Preisner

I am glad I re-watched it, I noticed few things that I missed last time round:
- How connected everything is in the Kieslowski’s universe. The same song by the same fictional composer van den Budenmayer was used in the other Kieslowski’s film “Dekalog”. And this composer is mentioned in the other films as well.
- I adored all the “dog” theme in the film: Rita-the dog, young judge's relationship with his dog, and PUPPIES! Huh, if people could be as loyal! Dogs made a particular impact on me this time round (may be because I have a dog of my own now)

Finding Neverland This is lovely, lovely film. It reminded me of “Narnia” . And of course, Johnny Depp!

House Season two of “House” starts this week in UK. I liked first season very much, Hugh Laurie is just totally inimitable. Without him it could have been just another stylish “medical” drama. But his antics made it into something witty, funny, great and occasionally sad. I am so much looking forward to season 2!

And now I want to make icons from all these films!

I like your solution to not being able to work on your project: films! My kind of solution. ;) That's an interesting group of films, too. As you know, I adore Finding Neverland - it's such a sweet, sad, and heartwarming story.

I really like Hugh Laurie, and I've been recording season 2 of House (I missed S1 so I'll have to get it at some point - I only saw an episode here and there), but I have zero time in the schedule to actually watch it. I imagine that next summer I will sit down with all the episodes and watch them finally. I hope so, anyway! From what I've seen, it's an excellent production. :)

It took me a while to get to watch "Finding Neverland", but i am so glad i did! I was not sure before because i don't like very much stories when married man finds "new family", but it felt right in the "Neverland".. I loved how the whole story was handled..

I also love A Chinese Odyssey!!! It's absolutely delightful, hilarious and cute!

I also liked Finding Neverland... but it made me cry my eyes out, it's such a poignant story. And, yeah, Johnny Depp!!

Oh! House! I love House as well... Hugh Laurie is fantastic in that series, he totally owns the character. The first season is being currently aired on satellite tv here... but next week it is also going to start on a regular channel! Lovely!

Johnny Depp is one of the actors who is good in everything he does, and fresh and different **wants Johnny for her birthday**

I can't get hooked on House, though I've tried several times. Hugh Laurie's acceptance speech was one of the highlights of the Golden Globes, though. What a wonderfully witty man!

I can't say i am "hooked" on House-the-series because i don't keep thinking about House and the crew when i am not watching it (as it is with BSG and Rome) and don't get extremely upset if i miss one episode. But Hugh Laurie's wit and sense of timing is just..Good pre-bed-time viewing!

How come you don't watch Battlestar Galactica? (i apologise very much if this is impertinent question, and you don't have to answer)

[identity profile] nutmeg3.livejournal.com 2006-02-05 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Your question wasn't at all impertinent, and I apologize for taking so long to answer. I'm pathetically far behind on all aspects of lj at this point.

I actually did watch BSG up through the episode that ended with Adama (or Roslyn?) and the evil female commander (whose name I forget) sending assassins after each other. That episode just made me so nuts that I quit even trying to become a fan, because even though I watched, I never got hooked. I'm not entirely sure why, and it's probably a combination of a bunch of things, but I can pinpoint a few.

One thing that truly bugs me and that I've talked about with a lot of people, including [livejournal.com profile] queenofthorns, is the near-total lack of humor. I'm not asking it to be Farscape, but there's an unrelenting earnestness to it that doesn't ring true to me. I just can't believe that among all those people, there's not at least one whose way of facing trouble and danger and, yes, the possible end of humanity is with humor of some sort.

I also found a lot of the characters less complex and interesting than I think I was supposed to. And Starbuck became, imo, a total Mary Sue, which really bugged me.

In the end, I just didn't care enough about anyone or anything that was happening to override my irritation at things like the Stalinesque commander. (I just couldn't buy it that a ton of people - soldiers among them - let her get away with that "shoot the families" shit.) So I stopped watching and realized I didn't miss it for a minute, and that I really had only been watching because several good friends watch and it seemed like I should at least try to keep up.

I'm glad you liked Chinese Odyssey - Vicky Zhao (hee see the icon by [livejournal.com profile] ginger001) and Faye were so cute.

Confession. Three colours - I have the soundtracks but have never watched the movies! *gasp*

I want to watch House but can't find the dvds here but I am an absolute sucker for medical dramas so I'm sure I'll like it when I finally see it. :)

Finding Neverland I missed and was curious about but there was such a furore in the Australian media about allegations of child molestation that I felt a bit ick and decided not to watch it .... I think we watched Alfie instead with Jude Law. I now wish I had gone to watch Finding Neverland becuase Alfie was pretty average.

I am totally jealous - "Three colours" music is incredible!

I think this was what put me off as well, and the fact that "married man goes to meet other family and his wife is home alone", but i must admit that film felt very true and right to me, very lovely.

Hey, I'm so happy you liked Chinese Oddyssey!!! It's such a cute and lovely movie!!!

Of 3 Colors, I think I have only seen one, Blue (is that the one with Juliette Binoche? because that's the one I saw) and it was pretty sad so I decided to not watch the others for now ;) I know they must be great, though.

House! I have seen most of season 1 and I like it because I love Hugh Laurie but it isn't my favorite series... I love him but the series... if I have to watch a series about doctors I'd rather watch Scrubs! ;)

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Blue" is my least favourite out of "Three colours" , as you say it is sad, but i loved music and it is very touching;)

if I have to watch a series about doctors I'd rather watch Scrubs! ;)

HEE! Scrubs - it is just so funny , everybody's "medical drama for the rainy day"!
