Unpopular opinions:

I am feeling very happy and sun is shining (sort of) so I feel I can make this post without any excessive bitterness the subjects don't deserve. As usual, these are just my personal opinions.

Films
1. English Patient: I don't see any sweeping romance. All I can see is a story about a woman cheating on her husband. Later everyone dies at will just because "they don't want to live without each other".

2. Titanic: Probably the weakest Oscars winner in the history.

Books:
1. Anna Karenina: I feel more for Anna's husband (whose main crime is that he is a plain boring chap) than I do for Anna. And I hate Vronsky's character with passion.

2. Harry Potter books: are amusing, but quite unoriginal, middle-of-the-road and are always trying to "teach you important lessons" (aka, to be preachy).

TV:
1. Buffy : I think that being a special girl with special superpowers is every girl's dream. But why is Buffy constantly unhappy with her life, to the point of making her mother's and her friends' life difficult?

2. Battlestar Galactica: I loved this show when it started. But after two seasons it disintegrated into a self-important soap opera set in space. With Cylons.

3. Doctor Who: David Tennant's poor acting and over-exaggerated facial expressions make me cringe. I am so glad Doctor Ten is over.

Asian drama:
1. "Hana Yori Dango": To start, Matsumoto Jun is one the ugliest men alive. This drama is probably the most popular Japanese drama of all times but I don't understand why. In my opinion "Hana Yori Dango" is the second name for jdrama mediocrity. It is pleasant, but nothing more than that.

2. "Hong Gil Dong" is many people's Korean drama favourite. I find it misogynist and it also has the most horrible ending.

LOLLOLOL!!!! Awwww, I thought he was very cute. A few acne scars on his cheeks but all in all very passable. ;)

P.S. I agree about English Patient!!! My hatred for that sad excuse for a romance knows no boundaries. ;)

hehas a slanted chin of doooooom. :D

P.S. I agree about English Patient!!! My hatred for that sad excuse for a romance knows no boundaries. ;)

what gets me the most is how contrived the circumstances of the protagonists' death are.

[identity profile] dianora77.livejournal.com 2009-06-11 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL A slanted chin of doom! What does that even mean? ;))))

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2009-06-11 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It means it is so bad that it looks bad even to me who is quite forgiving of slanted chins (I have one myself, after all) .

but these things are very subjective, of course!

[identity profile] dianora77.livejournal.com 2009-06-11 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahahaha, what you must have thought of me when I reacted positively to that entire show! ;))) But then again, I don't watch that much Asian drama, the only things I've seen were thanks to you. ;)

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2009-06-11 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! oh no, there is not a day that passes by without me seeing a post about Hana Yori dango on my friends list.

Take me right, I like this drama. I just think there many MUCH better ones. BTW - would you like me to send you some of my favourite jdramas?

[identity profile] dianora77.livejournal.com 2009-06-11 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
*is excited* Awww, thanks so much! Educate me, oh master. :D

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2009-06-11 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I must catch my chance seeing you are showing an interest in jdrama. I hoped you could like Korean dramas, but you didn't like "Legend" . :D

[identity profile] dianora77.livejournal.com 2009-06-11 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
No, no, you misunderstood me, I LOVED legend. I just don't hold Korean acting in general in such a high regard. ;)

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2009-06-11 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
** is relieved **

I find that there are some genuine cultural differences in the ways doramas (both Korean and Japanese) and Western shows are acted. I don't particular like all of these, especially their traditional comedy acts (I find them horrifying in the most part).

I find Jdramas to be particular close to Russian shows, in the way of acting and in their lenght (usually about 10 episodes).

[identity profile] dianora77.livejournal.com 2009-06-11 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, I know what you mean by horrifying. I was itching to fast-forward all those "comedy" instances in The Legend with that blacksmith woman (if I recall correctly) and other minor characters.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Believe me, "Legend" is much better in many ways than many other dramas. My asincere apologies, I haven't had a chance to send any of the Jdramas I promised yet! I will soon!

[identity profile] rika-66.livejournal.com 2009-06-11 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2009-06-11 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
yes, I also think that may be "Hana Yori Dango" works better for someone much MUCH younger than me. It is not a bad drama, but there are so many jdramas that are much better.

I also agree that Matsumoto Jun is quite a poor actor. This might be why he seems so ugly to me - he doesn't have any acting charisma.

[identity profile] chalicushu.livejournal.com 2009-06-11 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember feeling about 'Madame Bovary' just like you do about 'Anna Karenina'. I didn't like the said madam one bit, and I felt sorry for her husband. He was not such a bad person...
We hade quite a conflict with my teacher on that subject.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2009-06-11 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I absolutely agree about Madame Bovary!

[identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com 2009-06-11 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not shocking to comment that I disagree with every single one of these :)

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2009-06-11 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! This is why this is "Unpopular opinions" list. :D

[identity profile] madame-parker.livejournal.com 2009-06-11 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing with the English Patient is that it's so lovely to look at that I can overlook how bloody shallow some of the characters are, I did really like Hana though.
Titanic has it's weak points but it's better than most films that get fussed about, need to do a re-watch, haven't seen it in years.
I've never read Anna Karenina, bad me but I think I'd agree with you on the point of her husband, I felt the same about Madame Bovary.
So agree with you on the Harry Potter books, I can't even stand to read the last book, that's one case where the fame went to the authors head and it showed in the last 3 books.
I didn't always get the feeling that Buffy was making life constantly hell for her mother and her friends. In fact, the later seasons are all about how close Buffy is with her mum, most of all after her mum finds out that Buffy is the slayer and getting bloody is part of the job.
BSG just went painfully down the drain after season 2, while I liked the finale well enough, it felt more like a whimper then a bang, which is damn sad.
Oh yeah, I am so looking forward to the new Doctor and the new head show writer, I've had enough of Doctor Who as it stands right now.
Oh boy, this comment got long. :D

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
My apologies for answering late!

Buffy (and Angel in Angel) both have an attitude "I am THE SLAYER. I have my cross to bear. I know the best" that I find hard to accept.

"The English Patient" is my favourite movie ever, so... ^^
But I agree about the "Titanic", especially after seeing the half-documental masterpiece "Ghosts of the Abyss" by the same director and on the same theme.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
These things are very subjective sometimes, I can't deny that "English Patient" has good cinematography and wonderful actors.

"Titanic" - is a bad moofie. With good computer graphics.

[identity profile] nutmeg3.livejournal.com 2009-06-11 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I love you so much!

Movies:
I thought TEP was boooooring and yes, all about selfish adulterous people. The best I could say for T was that I didn't fidget when I saw it in the theatre. But best picture? Puh-lease.

Books:
I couldn't even bring myself to read AK. And HP? Derivative, overlong and self-consciously speh-shul.

TV:
OK, I loved BtVS up 'til the musical, but then...ugh. BG? I feel as you do, except that I started feeling that way from the first ep. DW is fun but I don't get the worshipfulness.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I couldn't even bring myself to read AK

I love the other part of "Anna Karenina", the part about Levin. He is Tolstoy's self-insert and I find his storyline very very interesting. It is also interesting for me that Levin's parts constitute for more than a half of the book but usually any TV and movie adaptations only include Anna/Vronsky storyline.

The English Patient: OMG YES. Plus, don't even get me started on how it won the Oscar for best costuming! How hard is it to stick people in khakis and a button down for the DESERT? Augh!

[identity profile] dianora77.livejournal.com 2009-06-11 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
What!?!? It won the costume design Oscar? Now I wanna know who the other nominees were that year.

I went and checked and holy crap, it ran against Hamlet, Emma AND The Portrait of a Lady. Un-freakin-believable! Not to mention that in the best movie category, its opponents were Fargo, Jerry Maguire, Secrets & Lies and Shine, all of which are far superior films. Heck even Maguire!

[identity profile] lage-nom-ai.livejournal.com 2009-06-12 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
It won the costume design Oscar? Now I wanna know who the other nominees were that year. As if you needed more proof about the ridiculous voting bandwagon that happens with some nominated films...

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed. I didn't even know this film won the Oscar for best costuming. I am even more enraged now. :D

[identity profile] vierran45.livejournal.com 2009-06-11 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't even seen The English Patient - not that interested in it, and Titanic was an okay entertainer, but nothing that special.

I wasn't feeling that sympathetic about Anna, referring to other comments, Madamy Bovary bored me to tears when I had to read it for a class.

I agree with you on Happy Potter. The books are fine as light reading, but not that original, or even particularly good. I still haven't finished reading the series... There are so many better children's novels, almost anything by Diana Wynne Jones, for example.

Hanadan: I love it. I don't think Matsumoto Jun attractive, but I still like him a lot as Domyouji.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you very much for Diana Wynne Jones rec - I am going to check this!!!!

Anna Karenina

[identity profile] nebula99.livejournal.com 2009-06-11 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I couldn't understand all the fuss about Anna either and yes, I did feel sorry for her husband. It amused me that he was seen to be so unreasonable because his wife was pregnant with another man's child and he was a bit annoyed about it!

And Yes on the English Patient. It bored me.

Re: Anna Karenina

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
And Yes on the English Patient. It bored me.

Exactly. it was also a rare film where I wanted to say "come on, pull yourself togher" to every single character.

[identity profile] wistfulmemory.livejournal.com 2009-06-11 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Titanic: I completely agree. I don't understand what was so great about the movie. The only part I liked was when the main people were at the bottom of the ship dancing as I'm a huge fan of the band that was playing.

Harry Potter: I like the books and movies, but I don't think they are the best thing in the world.

Doctor Who: I've been enjoying the 10th Doctor, so it makes me a little sad that you weren't a fan of him. Though I'm glad you're now excited about watching it again.

Hana Yori Dango: From my observations of what people like and dislike, there always seems to be some people who just can't get into something that's really popular, and that's okay. I've definitely been like that with a few of the really popular series.

Hong Gil Dong: I have yet to watch the last two episodes (even though it's basically been a year since I stopped) as I'm dreading the ending as I know it doesn't end well and I hate bad endings.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you very much for your opinions!

I hate bad endings, especially when I am not prepared.

Ha! I love Buffy (it was a huge part of my teenage years, and something my sister and I watched together almost religiously), but the character really is an angsty little piece of work, I agree! Honestly, kick arse powers and all she does is whine!?

OH THANK GOD. I didn't really enjoy David Tennant as Dr. Who at all, so I'm glad there's someone else out there who has the same opinion! I miss Christopher Eccleston. *sniffs*

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)

EEEEEEEEE! I am so glad that you share my opinion on this. I wish Christopher Eccleston did more than just one season.

[identity profile] calculare.livejournal.com 2009-07-11 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
So do I! He was a much more interesting Doctor than Tennant. *sighs*

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2009-07-13 11:05 am (UTC)(link)
I absolutely agree - his Doctor had much more depth.

I love 'Unpopular Opinions' posts because I usually agree with them!

Actually, I agree with most of these. (I can't comment on the Asian dramas because I haven't seen them.)

Dr. Who is probably what pisses me off the most. See, I never liked the show, but it's been my brother's favourite show since he was a tiny little thing watching it with my dad. So when the new series came over here, he was so excited and then so disappointed. It was as if someone redid 'Gone With the Wind' with Megan Fox and Robert Pattison and told me I'd love it and then forced me to watch it! Russell T. Davies just ruined the character of the Doctor and it's all awful. :/ I was so hoping they'd give the role to Robert Carlyle and the new writers would make it the way my brother loved it. I don't know. I feel so badly for people who have their favourite things, big or small, ruined.

I must admit I like Anna Karenina, but I do feel sorry for her husband at the same time. I find the similarities to Madame Bovary overwhelming (as others have commented) but I had this awful English literature course with a professor who must have been recently divorced or was just demented in the mind-- every single book we read had to do with a woman being 'unnatural'. Either she had an affair or she didn't want another child or something deemed horrible by society, no matter if the book was trying to explain that the woman was being smothered by society. I'm not exactly a raging feminist who bites men's heads off, but he was the biggest misogynist I have ever met in my entire life. The fights we had! Anyway, I like your list! That was my point. :)

he-he-he! I love your comparison !!!!!!!!!!!!!

he sounds aweful indeed! Anna Karenina is taught extensively in Russia (my opinion is that this book is a bit too much for 15-year-olds, but nonetheless) and usually the consensus is that Anna is a woman who is ahead of her time, etc, etc. This professor is very odd.

I was ready to disagree completely but you got me! even in some of my favourites like buffy or hana yori dango I must agree that you have a point, Buffy is a weeny weeny kid and MatsuJun is indeed one of the ugliest men alive (yet I always end up liking his characters and wishing them a very happy ending), in fact you have a good point in all of those on that list (and I'm pointing at you BSG and Hong Gil Dong, what a disapointment!), and then I'm dancing and laughing at the english patient because is one of my most hated movies ever bwahahahahaha!!!!

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Heee! I must say - "English Patient" is something I also feel VERY VERY strongly about. :D

[identity profile] substratal.livejournal.com 2009-06-15 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely agree with you on Matsumoto Jun, I cringe every time I see his face, and more so when he opens his mouth.
On the other hand, Tennant is pure win with me. (:

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
yep, I agree, likes/dislikes of the way one or another actor looks are purely subjective.
