I don't think I will be able to stop talking about Generation Kill

"Generation Kill" continues to be great. I am reading anything and everything connected with the show.

One of the facts is the losses in the Iraq war. More than a million are dead on Iraqi side, and the half of this are civilians. The population of Iraq is about 20 million and this means 1 in 20 is dead. The losses on the USA and allies side are around 4000, one for 250 on Iraqi side.

I came across an interview with real Brad Colbert (you can find a piece of it on the HBO Generation Kill website http://www.hbo.com/generationkill/ , in Brad Corbert's profile) . His looks are quite similar to the looks of Alexander Skarsgard, but in the interview he seemed to be quite a different guy from the TV show Brad. I must say, I didn't like the real Brad Colbert as much as I like Alexander Skarsgard's Brad Colbert. The real Brad seems to come across as a guy with a big dose of American patriotism, "I wanted to be a marine since I was a little boy" type of guy, where Alexander Skarsgard plays a more complex character. As [livejournal.com profile] the_grynne noted, the phrases like "Vote Republican" don't seem to sit well with the TV show's Brad.
One particular phrase irked me in the interview, something about "Why did I want to become a marine .. may be because of all the travel and adventure".

But to end it all on a happy (if somewhat shallow note), a new promotional photo for HBO's "True Blood" Eric (played by Alexander Skarsgard) is out, big thank you to [livejournal.com profile] endlessdeep:

STUBBLE. LUPINE EYES. THE FURS!

ajhsgfjfkgjj!

[livejournal.com profile] kenorland and I were fangirling the other day about how sexy the whole primal "I can kill you with my sword and marshal a longboat full of bloodthirsty pillagers" thing was when you put it in the suave figure of a vampire. It's the complexity and contradictions that make him so magnetic.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2008-08-15 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
** joins fangirling ** The furs absolutely killed me. :D

I love the clever trick in one of the books (4?) when Eric loses his memory and gets back to his "I am chieftain" self. SO GOOD.

[identity profile] the-grynne.livejournal.com 2008-08-15 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! And he's like, "Why are you not providing for your sister? She shouldn't have to work in a bar" at Jason.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2008-08-18 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! I kind of like Jason too, and I like the actor in the series.

I don't know if you have read it, but I posted this interview (http://umeedmerchant.livejournal.com/429450.html) from Salon.com with Ed Burns in July. I think it is a pretty good one.

Thank you so much for the link - this is an excellent interview. Some strong words there "From my point of view, we should try those people responsible for putting us to war. Put them in a courtroom, because what they did was a crime.". The show is very cleverly done, it avoids making any judgments but at the same time leads you to some questions..

you will have to forgive me, I fear that I am going to babble!

[identity profile] arathesane.livejournal.com 2008-08-15 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
In my gut I feel the same way as Burns, at least in regards to some members of the Bush Administration. But it is terribly complicated. One of the reasons that I haven't been posting much is that I don't want to offend or bore people. I haven't felt like posting about my life or fandom related things; I have been a little obsessed with the news and politics lately. I will say one thing, though, after last week, I am actually scared of John McCain. I lost respect for him quite a while ago, but now I fear what will happen if he becomes president of the US.

The show is very cleverly done, it avoids making any judgments but at the same time leads you to some questions

Exactly, which is why I appreciate it so much.

I usually don't venture too far into politics. I could not miss the unfolding story with Russian/Georgian conflict and the coverage of it in the West, though. I must say I am angry with everyone - with Russian government, with crazy Georgian president, with the Western double-standard (in the least!) media and governments. EVERYONE.

What happened this week? I think I am so absorbed in the Russian/Georgian conflict that I missed any news on McCain. But yep, he does not seem to be a good future president.

Re: you will have to forgive me, I fear that I am going to babble!

[identity profile] arathesane.livejournal.com 2008-08-15 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, it is his reaction to the Russian/Georgian conflict that scares me. I apologize for all of these links, don't feel like you have to look at them. I'm just putting them up as otherwise I would get incredibly long-winded. Some are from politically liberal blogs, if you do look at them, I wouldn't read the reply comments. There are a lot of idiots out there!

First, last Sunday he spoke of kicking Russia out of the G8 (http://www.crooksandliars.com/2008/07/27/this-week-john-mccain-wants-to-kick-russia-out-of-g8-why-to-teach-them-a-lesson-about-hubris-naturally/). On Wednesday he said "In The 21st Century Nations Don't Invade Other Nations" (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/13/mccain-in-the-21st-centur_n_118759.html). Also, on Wednesday this story was reported in the Washington Post- While Aide Advised McCain, His Firm Lobbied for Georgia (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/12/AR2008081202932_pf.html), and I think this story published today is interesting - McCain's Focus on Georgia Raises Question of Propriety (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/14/AR2008081403332.html).

I don't think that Obama has much of a foreign policy team yet but at the very least he stresses diplomacy a bit more.

OH MY DEAR! The guy doesn't seem to know what he is talking about! The "President Putin" / "Former President Putin" exchange is hilarious! I haven't fnished reading everything yet, I will get back to you!

What a beautiful picture! Thanks for sharing it. :)

I am glad you like! I am not sure if you read "Southern Vampire" books (the ones "True Blood" series are made from) . They are not at all good but Eric is wonderful. :D

I need to read a couple more of the Sookie books, if only to read the one where Eric loses his memory. *g*

This picture is great, and I like the way they blend the new and the old.

*is so very excited for this show*

THIS IS THE BEST BOOK IN THE SERIES! I don't want to spoil anything. :D

This picture is great, and I like the way they blend the new and the old.

I like the way they used the fur, and a man wearing a black shirt is always a big big plus!

I am very exited too. :D

You mean you reached THE SHOWER SCENE, right? :D

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
OF COURSE! And then he has gone back to being Eric. ** sniff **

[identity profile] transtempts.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, but then he finds out about it - and I love that with Sookie and Eric, they dance around intimacy, achieve it, and then are back where they started, but a little bit closer. And you know, him coming to her rescue (when she was all right) and being ready to violate the queen's laws without blinking? Mmm.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Though I get a bit annoyed with Sookie in the later books (especially the last one) when Eric is clearly out of his way for her and she is still "oh, he is so NOT VALUING me enough".

[identity profile] transtempts.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't gotten to read the latest book yet - is it to the point of annoyance, or is it rather in character- being cautious because the last time she dated a vampire it worked out so well? I think a little wariness is understandable, or is it such an obstacle that it makes empathizing with her, hard?

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2008-09-15 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I can uderstand the wariness up to some point, but I can't undertand why doesn't she see that Eric is way too "head over the hills" about her.
ext_2541: (Default)

[identity profile] transtempts.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
head over heels? yes in his own way, and now that i have resd the latest book i have to say that she seems to be more aware of it.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2008-10-13 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I need a new book of these series. :D

[identity profile] transtempts.livejournal.com 2008-10-13 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
you do! there is some great stuff in there

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2008-10-13 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly I have consumed them all already. I mean a completely new book. Where Sookie and Eric get together again. ;D

[identity profile] transtempts.livejournal.com 2008-10-13 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
when i finished the last book, i was so distressed- i want more now too. esp. with all the new dimensions to their relationship.

oooh he's pretty!!!

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2008-08-15 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)

SKARSGARD GENETICS FOR THE MF WIN OMG.

Good job the family includes something like 5 children (all grown-up to some degree :D).

I am glad you like the picture!:D

[identity profile] kenorland.livejournal.com 2008-08-15 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd always known Stellan Skarsgard had two or three kids who were making their own way as actors, but I'd never really paid attention until this one showed up, in excellent fashion, as Colbert.

OMG, normally this whole thing -- vampire, long hair, angst, a 'normal' love interest, sexy club owner (LOLOL, didn't we already do this in Forever Knight?) is ANATHEMA to me, but oh man, I know I am going to love this guy.

[identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com 2008-08-18 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Though I am personally a great fan of vampire lore, but I agree that the genre is SO overdone. But I LOVED Eric-from-the-book too, even though I thought the "Southern Vampires" series themselves are very weak. (And this has nothing to do with the fact that I ADORE Brad Colbert ;D)

[identity profile] endlessdeep.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Did you check out the picture at the link I posted in my entry? It's enormous!

Click on this link. click (http://true-blood.tv/Photos/Season1/Season1.html). SCroll down to Eric's picture and click on it. After it loads hover your mouse pointer over the bottom right part of the picture. When the square with the four arrows shows up click on it. HUGE ERIC! OMG!

I just love the throne with the fur. :)

OH MY POOR HEART! I didn't realise that there is a bigger version yet! Thank you so much!

I just can't wait! I am so gld they seem to do very clever advertising of "True Blood"!
