In a recent interview, Spielberg said that it was deliberately made, so that there was not such a big break in cinematography/style of directing/SFX between the Indy movies of 20 years ago and this one. They even used equipment from 20 years ago (the celluoid etc.) so that it had the look and feel.
Thank you very much for the info. Hmm, however I think that this wasn't Steven's winning move. I completely disagree with his opinion that there weren't a big break in the special since 80s. The use of CGI revolutionised the special effets, but there have been other new techniques too.
The problem is, I think, that the special effects in "Crystal Scull" look OLD but not old enough to have a feel of retro, like for example, in "Doctor Who". Also there is a big difference in expectations for cinema and TV production.
